    2. Gay Fielding
    3. Finally, After going off on a tangent to Joy, I talked about so many of 13 of my rellies in the one family being registered under misspelt names... The only way I found them was by putting nothing in the surname, and only the Christian names of the parents...and guess what I found Emma's birth...the same way.. .Here it is.. 1872/C2418 Henz Emma William Maria Sluter Now I can go to bed.. 3. Hi Lorrae, I believe this lady is actually a mis-spelling of Mrs Ovens, my grandmother's aunt Johanna Ovens. She was the licensee of at least two hotels in Croydon and had a few with her husband George Ovens also. Hope this helps. Hi List In the book, 'Croydon Gold, An Illustrated History of Croydon' is a reference to a Mrs OWENS who had a wayside hotel at Corron Crossing. This would have been outside Croydon on the horse and bullock team road to Normanton. There is no mention of her first name or that of her husband. No OWENS children are mentioned. Does anyone know anything of this lady please? I ask as my g-grandfather, John Patrick OWENS died in Cloncurry in 1901, and he was suppose to have an uncle in Normanton. 3. Hi Kerry Both my Husband and myself were born and bred in West End.... He lived a couple of streets down Hardgrave Rd. from the Church.... we both remember attending Fete's at the Churchwhen it was a Church.. but we cant remember when it ceased to be a Church...I think it was sometime in the 60's or early 70's.. it was used for various things.. such as you said Pilates Classes. Perhaps if you contacted the other Church they may be able give you an idea when it was built and it stopped being a Church.. St Francis down the Road was also where the Catholic School was...not sure if the school is still there or not today...Havent been over that way for awhile. 1. [AUS-QLD] Hill End Methodist Church - anyone know the history?
    2. Kerry Raymond
    3. Does anyone happen to know the history of Hill End Methodist Church, corner of Dornoch Terrace & Doris St, West End? If you know the area today, it's a couple of doors down from the Turkish restaurant Caravanserai. We were eating breakfast around the corner this morning when we noticed what is obviously a former church building, now up for lease (old signage suggested it had been used for pilates classes at some stage). Using Picture Australia, we have identified it in a 1938 photo as the Hill End Methodist Church (Hill End being the old locality name, today West End is the official suburb name). See here for the 1938 photo: http://www.pictureaustralia.org/apps/pictureaustralia?action=PADisplay <http://www.pictureaustralia.org/apps/pictureaustralia?action=PADisplay&mode =display&rs=resultset-1021051&no=1> &mode=display&rs=resultset-1021051&no=1 and we have a 1943 map of Brisbane that shows a Methodist church (no more specific name given at that location) so that all seems consistent. Anyhow we took a couple of photos of it to put on our WWW site and would like to add a little history of it if we can. However, searches with Google and the National Library newspaper project have turned up nothing really about this church. We know there is another Methodist church in Vulture St near Sussex Street in West End, so it is not that church. I have found some references to an Primitive Methodist church in the West End area, but don't have an address for it, so I am not sure if it is referring to the Vulture St one, the Dornoch Terrace one or some other church. There is a large Catholic church on Dornoch Terrace (St Francis of Assisi) but that is definitely further down the road and doesn't appear to be connected to this church on the corner of Dornoch and Doris. I'm not really looking for suggestions of archives and libraries etc that I might visit; I know them, I just don't get much time to go - maybe when I retire :-) I'm just asking if anyone has any personal knowledge. Kerry

    3. Hi Everyone. I am new to this list. I have not researched in Australia before so would appreciate any help given. I am trying to trace the movement or find the family of my late Grandmothers brother. Ernest Floyd McKay, known as Ernie. he was born in Riverton, South Island,New Zealand 1905. His father was David Alexander McKay. Along the way somewhere he left NZ and the last known place he lived was Brisbane.Last contact was in 1975 when his father passed away. He would have been 70 years old then. I have been unable to trace him as on line records do not allow me to search due to time frames. Any help would be very much appreciated Thanks for your time Kind Regards Diane Nelson (NZ)

    3. Hi Maurie Isn't that website fantastic? Apparently they are working on other newspapers too, but it's a long process. The Ernest Bullock that I found was Ernest W Bullock. James Crighton replied to my original message with an electoral roll record of 1922 that states that there was an Ernest William Bullock living in Burns Street who listed his occupation as teacher. This may be him, but your auditor was more than likely related - perhaps Ernest W.'s father? The ads that I saw (and printed one) in the Darling Downs Gazette list E.W. Bullock and E.W. 3. Hello all As promised, here is what I found out today at the Toowoomba Local History Library about Bullock's College: It was actually called Bullock's Commercial School. It was a co-educational private school founded by Mr Ernest Bullock in 1905 and had branches throughout Queensland. In 1910 it had 260 pupils, and according to Paul McNally in his book "School ties: a history of private schooling in Toowoomba" (1989), published by Darling Downs Institute Press in Toowoomba, it "presented candidates for Civil Service, Parliamentary Law, Federal Clerical, Federal Telephone Girls, Federal Telegraph Messenger, Commonwealth Promotion Examinations, Engineers Examination, Railway Apprenticeships and Clerks, Queensland Shorthand Society, and Shorthand reporting and Bookkeeping Examinations." (page 262) Bullock's Commercial School advertised regularly in the Darling Downs Gazette newspaper. Mr Bullock was a bookseller, stationer, newsagent, and had a circulating library at the premises at No 3 Groom's Buildings, Toowoomba. Hope all this information is useful for someone else. It is very useful for me! The ladies at the LHL was very helpful. Cheers Sandra Searston
