    1. [AUS-QLD] James WALKER aka James BROUGHTON
    2. Jim
    3. James WALKER aka James BROUGHTON was born in Surrey, UK about the year 1891. It is believed that he migrated to Australia about 1911 and took up residence somewhere in Queensland. He later became a Merchant Seaman and served on several ships in Australia and overseas. I am trying to ascertain if there any Subscriber who may have personal information on him that can help me out. I'm not particularly interested in his ship movements because I have most of that information from the National Archives. Thanks in anticipation, Jim

    3. Hi Barbara If you go to the home page, it is a project of the National Library of Australia - The Australian Newspapers Beta service allows access to historic Australian newspapers digitised as part of the Australian Newspapers Digitisation Program. The Australian Newspapers Digitisation Program is a long term ongoing program. In the early stages of set-up it is being managed as a project, until all workflows and procedures are well established. The documents here outline the project information to date. The documents will be updated and added to as work progresses. If you follow the links, you will see that they are wanting us to log-in and proof read it for them. Remember, LOGIN first so that others can see your name and contact you if the family belongs to you. Tremendous service they offer, especially when they do not have the manpower to do all the proof reading. 3. Hello Alan, Many thanks for your email and kind information. Yes every little bit helps when one is doing Family History.I have so may kind people on this list and will put all the info into the Musgrave File which is just about finished. Peter and Paul have had a week off in Brisbane and visited the State Library , and found similar to what I had found on the list. Herbert Cecil Musgrave was the only brother of their Grandmother Gertrude (Musgrave) Hardwick. He was born 1885 and died 24th June 1963 Brisbane. Ihave to check out where he is buried in Brisbane. Interesting to get these snippets of information about his occupation as a woolclasser which I will include in the Musgrave family history. Now the boys hope to complete their mothers family history...but thats another story and it is yet to start! 1. Re: [AUS-QLD] CAHILL and typos in notices
    2. Gay Fielding
    3. Hi Barbara, The transcriptions of the newspaper notices have been done BY A COMPUTER.. which will soon spell the end of volunteers endlessly typing up notices..and indexes.. The Program that reads the notices and actually converts it to typed words, is called OCR which stands for Optical Character Recognition... The most clever part of this program is that the computer can LEARN.actual recognition of letters and words.. The notices in the newspapers often have blobs of ink and worn out type and the OCR machine has difficulty reading those and takes a guess.. The early versions of OCR, when I was working and perhaps maybe still in existence, was like a wand that you would swipe across what you wanted read..and it would convert it to the typed word, or numbers.. Supermarkets use it constantly in swiping your groceries at the checkout...to total up the price of your groceries. This action also deducts that piece of stock from the stock on hand, and adds that same item to an order for a replacement of whatever you bought to the stores pending restocking purchase.. Its all about technology taking over a lot of the manual labour... There is a facility on the newspaper website where anyone who reads an article with errors, can actually correct the errors. Eventually all the typos and incorrect spellings will be corrected by private volunteers, such as me, when I read an article that interests me. I hope that clarifies it for you, and anyone else who is puzzled. Cheers Gay - Original Message ----- From: "Barbara Robinson" <bro51909@bigpond.net.au> To: <aus-qld@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 25, 2009 2:46 PM Subject: Re: [AUS-QLD] CAHILL families > Thank you for putting that site address up, it is interesting, but can > anyone tell me who has typed these notices the spelling is bad, lots of > typos, is it the type of programme or is it being done in a cheap Asian > country with no knowledge of the English language andspelling > > Barbara > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Barbara OConnor" <maurie777@ozemail.com.au> > To: <aus-qld@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Friday, July 24, 2009 7:34 PM > Subject: Re: [AUS-QLD] CAHILL families > > >> At http://ndpbeta.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/search?searchTerm=cahill+springsure >> you >> will find a number of references. >> >> Cheers >> Barbara >> >> >> ------------------------------- >> To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to >> AUS-QLD-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the >> quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > > -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- > > > > No virus found in this incoming message. > Checked by AVG - www.avg.com > Version: 8.5.392 / Virus Database: 270.13.20/2249 - Release Date: 07/19/09 > 17:59:00 > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > AUS-QLD-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message > >

    3. >From the WWW site: The text in the left panel has been electronically translated by a computer. Computers are not as good at reading as humans, and often make mistakes. You can help correct mistakes in articles by moving your cursor over a line and clicking "Help fix this text". By helping to fix this text, you are making it easier to search and a better resource for everyone! In my experience, the quality of the text translation varies considerably. Some are perfect, others gibberish, most are somewhere in between. What it is important to understand is that the search engine is using this translation to find your keywords, so if the text translation is gibberish, you will probably never find that article using the search engine. So if you see a poorly translated article, it is worth the effort to try to fix it so that the names (or main subject) are correctly transcribed at least once (so the search engine can find it), but it is less important to fix the whole transcription. However, I suffer from perfectionism and tend to find the whole article (i.e. I don't take my own advice). If you check on the main page of the site, you can see the "top correctors". One of them (username jhempenstall) has corrected a magnificent 227283 lines of text. Go jhempenstall! 3. Thanks for the message but my Cahills are not connected to the Cahills in Springsure, as I seem to remember that fellow was a Policeman. My lot came to Moreton Bay and then to Ipswich and then to Toowoomba. three of their sons, Thomas. Patrick and Matthew went to the Northern Territory with Nat Buchannan in about 1881. Paddy became famous in NT and he was appointed at "Protector of Aboriginals" and lived at what is know known as Oenpelli. There is a series of books by John Mulvaney about the lives of various settlers in NT, I understand the book on Paddy Cahill is available through the Aborignal Studies Press in Canberra.
