Hi Barbara and Listers, Hmmm ... well, I have now checked the other States, where I found some other LIPPs (including a Harry LIPP in the Victorian Pioneers). But, definitely no other Johannes LIPP ... so, my guess is that Johannes was a Swiss-German, from Oberdorf in (County) Basel-Land, Switzerland. (1824 is actually the date that Martin LIPP became a citizen of Oberdorf - not his birthdate). If anyone knows the Noel LIPP who was looking for his family in 2006 in Cambooya - I suspect he may have run into a brick wall, if he was looking for his family in Germany ... the reason being that they were actually *Swiss* :-) Cheers, Lesley (In grey, *wet* (yes) Melbourne) > Says, in part, "...German couple Johannes and Mary Lipp who arrived at Emy > Creek/East Greenmount in 1870.."

Thanks to Ms Google, I came across the Minutes of a meeting of Cambooya Shire Council in which correspondance from Noel Lipp who was researching his family history. Says, in part, "...German couple Johannes and Mary Lipp who arrived at Emy Creek/East Greenmount in 1870.." You can read more at http://www.cambooya.qld.gov.au/minutes/20060816minutes.pdf Cheers Barbara
Hi Listers, I should say first of all that this is not my family - but yesterday, a Swiss cousin asked me to look for a Johannes LIPP, who he said had migrated from Oberdorf to Australia in 1858. OK - so I started looking in NSW ... surprisingly few of that name, there ... then checked in Queensland, where I found a death for a *Johannas* LIPP, born Germany aged 76 years, in 1913. Then checked the Immigration records, and found a Johannes LIPP (29) and Marie LIPP (22) arriving on the Humboldt in 1870 (so, not 1858 - but maybe they had been somewhere else, first?). Then checked the Queensland births - none with Johannes LIPP as father, but there was a John and Mary LIPP, who had had 7 children between (yes) 1871 and 1891. Names looked very English - but a check of the marriages found that the daughter whose birth was registered as Maria Margaret LIPP in 1873 (daughter of John LIPP and Mary APPEL) had married as Maria *Margretta* LIPP, in 1895. (Not so English, after all) :-) I wonder, does anyone know anything more about this family? In particular, whether they might be Swiss, rather than German in origin? The ones I am looking for are descended from Martin LIPP, born 1824 in Oberdorf, Switzerland. Cheers, Lesley (In grey, breezy Melbourne)
You might try the church at Mossman, that's closer than Cairns. St Therese is across the road from here but I think you will need the main diocese in Cairns. Google should tell you the details. Hi Pam, Have received lots of history from the Cooktown Historical Society's Marjorie about the Neills but she cannot find her burial or death either. Lena is not registered in the cemetery and the cemetery is for all denominations. There is no Catholic Church there nowadays to search the registers so I will contact the Cairns Catholic Church or the Bishop in Cairns who might be able to help. Hi Mary It might be worthwhile trying the council in Cooktown. Some if the cemetery is overgrown when I was there about 12 years ago, though very interesting. The main area looked okay though. There is a museum in Cooktown, I think it is called the James Cook Museum or something similar. Mary Mizzi, I belong to the Catholic parish of Mareeba and I can tell you that at the moment there is no Catholic priest in Cooktown. It's the story all over Australia, unfortunately. Hi List, Can anyone point me in the direction of sources which would tell me what foods were commonly eaten in 19th century Queensland. In particular, I am interested in the 1850s. Whilst I can see what foods were available by looking at the Moreton Bay Courier, there is nothing to say who purchased them. What foods were consumed by the working classes and which were considered luxury items? Obviously there would have been cultural differences which influenced diet (my ancestors were Irish), but how did immigrants deal with the array of different foods which confronted them? Much of it would have been very different to what they had experienced at home. Any thoughts welcome. With thanks, Jo Mitchell Geelong

Thanks to Stan, Janelle, Barbara and Sherrie for your replies to my email about Lena NEILl. No results as yet in finding her burial or grave. Family seem to think she is buried in Cooktown and I am thinking of contacting the Catholic Priest in Cooktown to see if he has any idea of her death/burial. As suggested, the grave might be there but the number covered in dust although, I would be rather surprised if there was not a headstone above her grave...after all, she had Helenvale and Helen Street, Cooktown named after her....a wonderful lady from what I have read, who was always a great help to all. She never married but was always on call to help her family and friends. Will see what I can find. I have most of the history of the Neill Family...thanks Janelle for that mention of Johanna Guilfoyle....will open that site and save the information for the NEILL family tree, which I am researching for the descendants. Again thanks for all your help...such a lot of kind people and a great site for getting any help in tracing our ancestors. Kind regards, Mary
