Hi Marg, The State Library of Queensland will take the diary I have. All ready to be posted. Bev --------------------------------------------------
Thank you Kerry, Barbara and Jill, I think I shall phone the Archives. Hubby's grandfather worked on the Tivoli and according to the site that Jill sent work began in 1914. Which must be when g.father wrote in his diary works that had to be done. Besides that he has a list of costing's which must have had something to do with setting up house in Brisbane after immigrating as the diary itself was for 1908-1909 Bed £4 10s Bolster £ 3s 6d. Bed £2 11s 6d. Chairs £2 14s Dresser £1 15s Table 3s Kettle 3s Pans 2s pd F. Pan 1s 4d B. Wick 6d " 1s Brush 1s 3d Pan 1s 2d Bucket 10d Brush 6d Dinner set 17s 6d Cups 3s 3d Pot 2s 3 Jug 4d Jug 10d Lamp 10s 6d Table 4s 9d He then lists a numbers of other goods as in a blind roller, oil cloth, paste board, iron brackets, pegs, knife board, picture rings and a bath looking glass. A small insight into what was paid c 1908-1909. Bev
Hi Bev, If my memory is correct, there was a Tivoli Theatre on Albert Street, opposite the City Hall. That's all gone now, of course, we have that hot square instead. The Tivoli was a picture theatre, with an open air seating on the upper level. I've just found this link: http://dlibrary.acu.edu.au/staffhome/siryan/academy/theatres/Bris_tivoli.htm Google and you will find some more, Cheers, Jill
Possibly she does not have a headstone which seems to be a common thing in those days as not every family had money for such thing Barbara BNE -----Original Message----- From: Greg Bugden Sent: Wednesday, January 18, 2012 8:35 AM To: Aus-QLD Message Board Subject: [AUS-QLD] Sarah Stubbs grave site Hello Listers Sally Owens was a QLD pioneer with a bit of profile in the 1840s-60s. The name "Tivoli" is now used on a nightclub down near the Exhibition Grounds there has been some reports and old photos in the Courier Mail some years ago (Can't remember when) when they did a separate supplement on the older view of Brisbane. I’ve been researching my family tree for a number of years and for most of them the fate of my grandfather’s younger brother Ivor Montague PICKERING remained a mystery. He was born in Woodville, New Zealand, in October 1907 and sometime in the late 1930s/1940s he disappeared. He only came to light again when I obtained a copy of his mother’s death certificate which showed she had four sons instead of three. Before that his nieces and nephews didn’t even know he existed! We imagine that there must have been some sort of scandal for him to have left the country and for his name never to be mentioned again! I’ve managed to work out that he left New Zealand and moved first to Sydney and then Toowoomba in the late 1930s/early 1940s and that he was employed as the Manager of the Stock Exchange Hotel, Toowoomba, in the early 1940s. He died in March 1945 of alcohol poisoning at the Toowoomba Hospital and is buried in the Drayton Cemetery. Another mystery is that the grave he is in is a double one and the joint owner of the grave with Ivor was Elizabeth SULLY who was the owner of the Stock Exchange Hotel and who was married (to Lionel SULLY). It seems that she was never buried in the other grave but when she died she was buried elsewhere. I’d like to make contact with any members of the SULLY family or anyone who might know the history of the Stock Exchange Hotel. I’d also like to find the resting place of Elizabeth and Lionel SULLY to know whether they were buried together. Regards Tracy Pilet New Zealand

That could use a recheck but I don't get to the Qld State Archives anymore. If some kind soul is in the position to help it would be appreciated. I am looking for the following passengers on a Flying Cloud passenger list. (They are not on the online indexes). I can't find my copy of the research but had the following together on a Flying Cloud voyage in arriving Brisbane February 1863. Michael Casey age 24 Ellen Casey would have been 17/18 And John Casey... would have been 19/20/21 Michael is my ancestor and I have long held the suspicion that Ellen and John were siblings of his. I did purchase death certificates for these individuals (both listed the same father as my Michael and the father's occupation was also consistent. Ellen's death certificate had a different mother and John's had no mother listed. Both the death certificates listed them as having been in the colonies for the appropriate amount of time for the Flying Cloud voyage. Something I had not (or have forgotten if I had) chased up, is that John's death certificate says he was married in Ireland the year before the voyage. He had two children out here so... If someone is going to the Archives and has the time could they please check this voyage, Michael and Ellen were both single but I need to know if the John listed was married and if he was there should also be his wife Margaret on the same voyage. All irish and John was a carpenter. I wish now that I had ordered Ellen's marriage cert. from the archives, back when they were cheap, to see if there was any further info. (place of birth? Instead of just county Cork). But going over the info. Again now I have seen she was married here in Warwick so I will be going to the church to see what info. They hold there. The government marriage entry for my Michael didn't have his parent's names yet the church register did.. Any help appreciated. Arthur Ambrose Searle died in Brisbane on 4/9/1953 (according to the online Qld death index). The lighthouse keeper was Arnold Searle, he was aged 60 and he was taken off the island on 21/9/1953 (a couple of weeks after Arthur died). http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article42815055 So I think we can discount the lighthouse keeper, although he could be related of course. I checked through the Courier-Mail editions following 4 Sept 1953, but I didn't see a death or funeral notice. Kerry
Hi List I am researching Arthur Ambrose SEARLE who died in Qld in 1953. (born in Plymouth, Devon in 1876) Wondering if some kind person would help with Elec Roll details from Ancestry (I only have UK Ancestry at present). There are 6 listed - 2 at Moreton; 3 at Wide Bay; & 1 at Lilley (under SARLE) Also I found a newspaper clipping, Cairns Post, 21 Sept 1953 It reported a sick man from Pine Islet being transported to Mackay on board the launch Silverware. "The man is Arthur Searle, single, assistant light keeper, suffering from kidney problems". Can anyone help - could this be my Arthur? . Seems ironic that both these dates are 1953, but I'm sure he would have been a bit old to be a light house keeper. - Are there records on L/H Keepers around ?? Arthur would have been 77 yrs old when he died in 1953. Lots of questions still to be answered..... Thanks heaps Helen NZ

Helen, Just had another thought. In fact just today I phoned the Qld State Archives asking if they wanted some old Documents [almost went through the shredder] and photo's that I have. Yes, of course they do. One photo was of a Light House Keeper and he is old looking in the photo, so maybe he is your man.
