Unfortunately Sarah/Sally Stubbs died in 1861, which is a few years prior to the opening of Ipswich General Cemetery. I don't know of any earlier cemetery in Ipswich, but maybe someone does? Or maybe Sarah/Sally is buried in a lone grave somewhere. Hi Bev I have heard from another lister that the Tivoli Theatre was in Albert St opposite the city hall. He remembers the roof garden and that the theatre closed in 1965. I remember going there in the 1950s-1960s with my boyfriend who became my husband. I have confirmed with my husband that the Tivoli movie theatre had a roof garden where you could also watch movies. I would suggest that this is the place where your grandfather worked. The other Tivoli Theatre Restaurant only came into existence about 1990. Regards Pam in Brisbane
Hello Listers Sally Owens was a QLD pioneer with a bit of profile in the 1840s-60s. The Marburg Valley was once known as Sally Owen's Plain. She was the widow of Samuel Owens who had the Woolpack inn at Old man's Waterhole (Laidley). She remarried in the 1860s and died as Sarah Stubbs at Ipswich 4th Dec 1861. The death Cert says she was buried in Ipswich. I can't locate the gravesite however. Does Anybody have a suggestion? Regards Greg Greg Bugden 140 Brown Street ARMIDALE, NSW, 2350 AUSTRALIA

looks like they moved around a lot ... a Funeral Notice for a May Gertrude SULLY of Tweed Heads states Mr and Mrs Lionel SULLY were from Adelaide. 1949 Also there is a Elizabeth SULLY who is a publican of the Oakfield Hotel in Adelaide in 1950 Jan
Hi Pam The Tivoli Theatre was most definitely located, in Albert Street, approx mid way between Ann & Adelaide Streets. I regularly went there, from the mid forties (40) until it closed. It did have a Garden Roof, but from my memory it did not operate after the mid fifties (50) Regards John Benfer

Hi Tracy I live in Toowoomba so if there's anything I might be able to check out for you let me know and I'll see what I can do. The funeral notices for both Elizabeth and Lionel Sully, who died only two months apart, are listed on the web site for the "Ryerson Index" as appearing in the "Sydney Morning Herald": SULLY Elizabeth Death notice 14JUL1961 Death 58 at Canterbury Hospital, late of Campsie Sydney Morning Herald 15JUL1961 SULLY Lionel Death notice 12SEP1961 Death late of Campsie Sydney Morning Herald 14SEP1961 You can go to the Ryerson Index web site and request a look-up of those funeral notices (or someone on this list may have access to them) which should show where they are buried and maybe follow it up from there to see if they are together. Regards Gloria

Most people who are asked about the Tivoli movie theatre will remember that it was opposite the City Hall in line with the Albert Street Methodist Church on the corner and Wallace Bishop on the corner opposite where the Commonwealth Bank is now. Let me ask this. Do you remember when we had coloured water fountains, numerous famous statues, a World class square (not like the thing we have now) and cars that could pass the front of the City Hall in both directions separated by the fountains where as children we would stand and watch them change colour and watch the different patterns? For those who remember all this will also know where the Tivoli was. Colin ======= Email scanned by PC Tools - No viruses or spyware found. Hi Bev I don't think the one in Costin St started operating until about the late 1980s. It was fairly new when I went there. The original building was built in 1917. From memory it did not have a garden roof. It may have been something else in between being Adams Cake Shop and the Tivoli. Surely someone else must remember these theatres. I will have a talk to my husband and see what he remembers about the movie theatre. Pam in Brisbane ----- Original Message ----- From: B. Hi Barbara The original Tivoli Theatre was situated in Albert St opposite the City Hall - as mentioned by another Lister. Apparently it began with vaudeville; concerts etc. (at least this is my recollection of what my mother told me when we visited it in later years when it became a picture theatre. The bottom theatre area was called the "Tivoli" with the upstairs called "The Roof Garden". Two separate entities - more expensive going to the Roof Garden. They usually ran the more "off- beat "movies of the time. I remember her telling me about a Beauty Contest they held there. She had apparently entered but "ran a mile" when she found out she had to wear a bathing suit! I would say this would have been c.1920s. Would try John Oxley for these early records and photos. Hi - from a History of "Toowoomba Hotels compiled by John Clements", which may still be available to purchase from the local family history library here, he states that the Stock Exchange Hotel, situated along Anzac Avenue, Toowoomba, was once known as the Forest Inn and then renamed Forest Hotel about 1887(?) and back to Forest Inn in around 1903. It was thought that Captain Thunderbolt stayed at this hotel around 1865. The name was changed to Stock Exchange Hotel on 12 December 1940 and Elizabeth SULLY was the publican from 1940 - 46 but she is also list as the publican for the Fiveways Hotel in 1940. No mention of the Pickering name sadly...................JC On 18 January 2012 07:16, doug&jan <[email protected]> wrote: > A photo of his grave can be obtained here > > www.freewebs.com/toowoombacemetery > > > Jan > a.. ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Tracy Pilet" <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Wednesday, January 18, 2012 6:07 AM > Subject: [AUS-QLD] PICKERING/SULLY, Stock Exchange Hotel, Toowoomba > > > I’ve been researching my family tree for a number of years and for most of > them the fate of my grandfather’s younger brother Ivor Montague PICKERING > remained a mystery.
