    3. When I was looking at births for WELLS in NSW, I found that a few of them were registered at the TWEED RIVER, which is on the NSW/QLD border. Perhaps her birth was never registered, and why she said she was born in QLD. I still think her wedding certificate, if you can obtain a copy, is your best bet. I looked up the newspaper in Google Archives and it says: WIGHTMAN, Sonia - May 3, 1987, at hospital, late of Rydalmere, wife of Reginald (deceased) and loved mother of Patricia, Dawn, Warren and families. Aged 88 years. In God's care. Private cremated. So if Reginald is deceased, the electoral rolls suggested he was deceased by 1936. Kerry

    3. Hi Graham, Just had a quick look for your Sonia. Not that uncommon, I have known a few in my time. I have had no luck with her, but have found a couple of May Sloan/e's and one Frederick Wells. I found on the Australian newspaper collection of Trove a funeral for a Frederick George Wells in NSW on 23 April, 1936. It doesn't actually name his family members, just asks if the friends of "Mrs" would care to attend. Ah, his wife's surname was Quigley, married in 1880. I have found a May Sloane in Queensland, but not "officially" having children until around 1910. Also a May Sloan in New South Wales marrying a Norman P Gill in 1911. I suppose you have noticed that Amy is an anagram of May? Has the name been muddled? The newspaper Sydney Morning Herald repoted on 6 May, 1905, that an 18 year old Reginald Wightman, a clerk, stole a cheque from his step-father George Mallow (who brought the prosecution - Reginald was working for him) which was used to bet on the horses. He was sentenced to three months with hard labour, but the sentence was then suspended and he was put on a good behaviour bond for 12 months. I did find your marriage, however. WIGHTMAN, Reginald married WELLS, Sonia in 1931 in Randwick (a suburb of Sydney) New South Wales. Reg. 1931/12695 Getting a copy of that certificate would give you more information, (as long as they didn't tell fibs) but I believe the person applying has to be either one of the parties, or the nearest direct descendant or relative still living. http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/Index/IndexingOrder.cgi/search?event=marriages Neither of them died before 1981 in the official NSW records, but I did find a stillborn son born in 1942 to a May Isobel Wightman at Paddington in Sydney. Reg. 1942/11897 The prefix "R" was added to this registration, which usually means that the entry is also entered twice into the records, usually with an alternative spelling of the surname or another surname. Ah, a search under the registration number only, shows another surname of LOVE. Did they move elsewhere? If Reg was 18 in 1905, by the time the 1981 finish of online death registrations in NSW he would have been close to 95! That's all I can find for you at the moment, hope this helps a little, Wynnette. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Graham Taylor" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, February 20, 2012 4:53 AM Subject: [AUS-QLD] Sonia Wells > G'day to you all > > Trying to find out any information I can about > > Sonia WELLS said to have been born circa 1898 in Queensland > (Brisbane??).she > was to marry a Reginald WIGHTMAN circa 1931. > > Her father is said to have been Frederick George WELLS a farmer and her > mother was said to have been May Amy SLOANE. > > This may be pure conjecture but Sonia is not a common Australian name and > COULD be a derivative of Sophia which may be Russian.
