Hi Barbara I had a quick look at the BDM's and found your grandfather Archibald as well as three siblings, two of whom appear to have died before William himself passed away. Would that be correct? The state archives at Runcorn might have more dedicated information than the state library at Southbank, although I've always found the latter excellent. However the QSA holds a lot of original documentation. Because the "Kate Conley" only plied up and down the east coast of Australia, I don't know what the QSA might hold in respect of other records for her but I do know that when I was researching my great grandparents, who arrived on the "Earl Russell" in 1864, I was able to locate records of the court cases of a couple of the crew members from that voyage as well as other reports. If that was indeed your William who was a member of the Loyal Orange Lodge and for whom the fundraiser was held in August 1882, I wonder if the QSA might hold any of those records or direct you to where they might be held. Maybe there could be something in there that might help. I know nothing about lodges but guess there would be some sort of membership record that might hold a clue. The Loyal Orange Lodge looks to still have its office in Merton Rd, Woolloongabba so it might be worth a call. Gloria
Hi Barbara, you may find that the Qld State Archives may have what you are looking for. Series ID 8613 Previous System Location A/36287A - A/36287B; RSI2685/1/1-2 Title Registers of Male and Female Prisoners Admitted (with Descriptions) Parent Series This series does not have a parent series. Start Date 5/4/1863 End Date 27/6/1957 Cheers, Christine I will look at State Library as I also want to find what the bit about him being in Rockhampton Gaol and probably won;t find much on why he deserted his ship, and if he was working on a Coastal ship he may have been here some time before 1870s. It appeared in the "The Queenslander (Brsbane)" on Sat 26th August 1882. You mentioned that your William died in 1882 and in "The Queenslander" of 29th July 1882 appeared the names of "persons died in the Brisbane Hospital during the past month". These included a William WaRthen (an extra 'r') aged 37, of South Brisbane, who had died from cirrhosis. I have seen Wathen miss-spelled as Warthen once before and the fact that he appears to be a similar age, and lived in South Brisbane, suggests that it may be he. The function mentioned in my earlier post took place the following month. If Mary Ann had other children from a previous marriage, maybe they were grown by the time that William died in 1882 and no longer being supported by her so is it possible that the 'three children' mentioned were only the younger ones still at home? In the "Brisbane Courier" of 23 Sept 1882 appears " In the LAND and GOODS of WILLIAM WATHEN, late of South Brisbane, in the Colony of Queensland, Labourer, Deceased, Notice is hereby given that, after the expiration of fourteen days from the publication hereof, application will be made to the said Honourable Court that LETTERS OF ADMINISTRATION of all the land, goods, chattels, credits, and effects of the above named William Wathen, deceased, who died intestate, may be granted to MARY ANN WATHEN, of South Brisbane aforesaid, Widow of the said deceased. Dated at Brisbane this Twenty-first day of September, A.D. 1882.11 Nov 1882. Probate was granted in November. Gloria Many thanks for your reply, I have a copy of the Probate papers as he and Mary Ann appear on the Real Estate from Tranmission of Deaths microfiche published by the Southern Suburbs Branch of the Genealogical Society of Qld of which I am member, my mother's father was 6 months old when he died, there were two young children from her first marriage and Archibald Mathieson was her younger son at the time. I hadn't thought about looking at the newspapers other than for a Funeral notice as we have copies of the funeral directors records and he was buried by K M Smith to South Brisbane Cemetery (unmarked grave of course). I have been trying for 20 years to find where he came from, as we only have the information he gave when he married. One of my cousins granddaughters has put the family information on Ancestry and she has made several mistakes but of course it is hard to get changes made. I will look at State Library as I also want to find what the bit about him being in Rockhampton Gaol and probably won;t find much on why he deserted his ship, and if he was working on a Coastal ship he may have been here some time before 1870s. Thank you Gloria but I don't think this is the same person as his widow had other children from her first marriage to a William Burgess (another seaman) and she was living in Baynes Street Sailor's Gully now known as Highgate Hill or South Brisbane. She lived in the same street until her death on 1912. As entertainment was given last Tuesday night at the Protestant Hall, under the auspices of the Loyal Orange Lodge of Queensland (Mr. D. P. His family have been left comparatively destitute, and his brethren of the lodge decided to build a cottage for his widow and family. The proceeds will be devoted to that purpose, and it is gratifying to record that the sympathy and support of the members of the lodge and of the public was fully demonstrated by a very large audience. The hall was crowded, many persons having to be content with standing room, and the number present was stated to be about 900. The whole of the entertainment was carried out successfully. The piano solos were well executed, and the songs by lady and gentlemen amateurs were most favourably received. Christine Thank you very much this is interesting as I have not been able to find anything on him but never thought to look at the Goverment Gazettes. so he possibly has been here will before he married Mary Ann Burgess. He died in 1882 so wasn't around long. Christine If you put "*" in the family name area and the date in the date of birth area you can look for yourself as you do not need to put any names in any area. You can do this for all 3 birth death and marriages forms. You can also click on Reg, given names, surnames, father's names or mother's names and put them into date order or alphabetical order Colin -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Christine Sent: Friday, 30 March 2012 9:44 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [AUS-QLD] QLD BMD Index cd question Hello Everyone, This is a question for anyone with the Qld BMD cd's. Hi Barbara The QSA (Qld State Archives) over at Runcorn holds records of ships' deserters that may be able to help you out. In fact, there are a lot more records than we often consider over there, and you might be able to find other things as well. For instance, he appears in the intestacies files: Queensland Intestacies, Insolvencies & Wills 1859-1900 Last Name: Wathen First Name: William Residence: South Brisbane Country: Queensland, Australia Notes: Labourer Type: Intestacy Secondary: Court: Brisbane Date: 23 September 1882 Page: 760 State: Queensland Country: Australia The "Kate Conley" moved around a bit but also came down from 'Mackay, in 1876 so I'm guessing that McKay is actually Mackay. Gloria
Courtesy of TROVE - The Kate Conley, barque, from Mackay, sugar laden, arrived at Sydney on Tuesday. http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/1398402?searchTerm="kate conley"&searchLimits=exactPhrase=kate+conley|||anyWords|||notWords|||fromdd=01|||frommm=05|||fromyyyy=1875|||todd=31|||tomm=05|||toyyyy=1875|||l-word=*ignore*%7C*ignore*|||sortby
Hi Barbara I just checked Mariners and ships in Australian Waters - http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/search.htm - and William Wathem is listed on Kate Conley's voyage Port of McKay to Sydney, May 3rd 1875, Deserted. Must have been a fun trip - 2 other deserters and one Martin Sarsen sent to Gaol. Search the site - you should come up with other vessels he sailed on. Cheers Barbara
Just checked on Trove & yes it is Mackay, Qld. It seems as if this ship only sailed around Australian waters. He may have deserted in March of 1875 due to the ship being washed ashore in Mackay, because of severe weather conditions. Other than ancestry, I don't know of any other crew lists online, sorry I couldn't help with that.
