    3. HI Pat, neither appear in the Brisbane City Council Cemeteries. nor the moreton bay regional council.. or nudgee catholic cemetery. It is possible that they were cremated which would have been at Mt Thompson Crematorium. The death certificate is the only way to know for certain. Cheers Sue. 3. Hi Pat, You've probably already done a Google search that brings up quite a bit on the family of Benjamin Burton Whitehouse senior, an organ builder. Also several mentions on the Trove website. He is buried at Toowong. Perhaps you could contact other researchers who may be able to tell you where Benjamin junior and Ethel were buried. They may have been cremated. Cheers, Di

    3. Gloria Thank you for the email, I have all the information regarding the Brisbane side of the family as William is my mother's grandfather, what I have had problems with is finding him in England and now I have found him listed in the Police Gazette as being charged in Cooktown and doing 2 months time at the Rockhampton Goal and when he was discharge he appears to have gone back on board a ship and then deserted in NSW before he came to Brisbane. Maybe he was here before but I can't find him before he married here in the late 1870s and he died in 1882. The bit about the Lodge is interesting as there was nothing to indicate he had been a member but those types of records are not usually held at State Archives as they are not a Government Dept. I now have to check the Cooktown Court book (If Archives have) it to see if there is any other what other information there is on him. I couldn't answer before as I had a crook modem and Telstra had to replace the one they put in when they changed the phone lines over to the fibre optic cabling courtesy of Anna Bligh as the new hospital being built for the Mater wanted the land where the old Exchange was situated. Thanks again Barbara -----Original Message----- From: Gloria Sheehan Sent: Tuesday, April 03, 2012 8:09 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [AUS-QLD] Re a William Wathen deserted from the Kate Conley 1875 Hi Barbara I had a quick look at the BDM's and found your grandfather Archibald as well as three siblings, two of whom appear to have died before William himself passed away. Would that be correct? The state archives at Runcorn might have more dedicated information than the state library at Southbank, although I've always found the latter excellent. However the QSA holds a lot of original documentation. Because the "Kate Conley" only plied up and down the east coast of Australia, I don't know what the QSA might hold in respect of other records for her but I do know that when I was researching my great grandparents, who arrived on the "Earl Russell" in 1864, I was able to locate records of the court cases of a couple of the crew members from that voyage as well as other reports. If that was indeed your William who was a member of the Loyal Orange Lodge and for whom the fundraiser was held in August 1882, I wonder if the QSA might hold any of those records or direct you to where they might be held. Maybe there could be something in there that might help. I know nothing about lodges but guess there would be some sort of membership record that might hold a clue. The Loyal Orange Lodge looks to still have its office in Merton Rd, Woolloongabba so it might be worth a call. 3. Hi Jennifer, I have some Tooheys in my family tree who married into my Hogan Family. I don't have much information on them but know there are others on the net who have looked into the various family connections in some detail. Hogans, Tooheys and Kelly's came out progressively - all from around Borrisokane in Tipperary. Michael Kelly married Bridget Toohey - could be the one on your list. I also have her sister (?) Winifred Toohey marrying my relative John Hogan b1840 Four Hogans came out progressively. James b1830 on Cambodia in 1855 Married Catherine Kelly (Michael's sister?) emigrated together and had a daughter on board boat John b1840 on Ascendant in 1858 married Bridget Toohey Rody (Roger)b 1839 also on Ascendant with John Winifred b1847 on Wansfell in 1866. Married Arthur O'Connor. All settled near each other in Brisbane valley. I don't have any information on my file about the Toohey parents but do have noted down that they were from Borrisokane. I probably have some more info from Kelly and Toohey descendants which I haven't processed to my file yet. I have some interesting info about landholdings of John Hogan and his sister Winifred Hogan and copies of correspondence with the Lands department, one handwritten by Michael (?) Have photos of Winifred Hogan Nolan but none of the others. I have a tree on Ancestry I can share with you if you thing this is the right family. Or could share a GEDCOM file and other material. Nellie Shelan (mvshelan)and Bridie Dwyer (bridiedwyer)on Ancestry are both descendants of Michael Kelly and Bridget Toohey and may have more info. Mairead Sorrenson (maswanson1_1) on Ancestry (email address above) was born in Ireland now lives in US and is related to this family also. :) Elizabeth West [email protected]

    1. [AUS-QLD] TOOHEY FAMILY on SHIP - John Fielden to Moreton Bay - 11th June 1853.
    2. Dr. Jennifer Lambert Tracey
    3. Trust all on the list are having a wonderful Easter. I'm trying to find contacts or anyone researching the TOOHEY / TOUHY / TWOHY etc.. family from Tipperary who arrived at Moreton Bay on board the 'John Fielden' in 1853. Below is the list of names of family members. Any assistance or leads much appreciated. 297 Tuohy John 39 Farm Labourer Tipperary 298 Tuohy Ellen 40 Wife 299 Tuohy John 17 300 Tuohy Mary 15 301 Tuohy Ann 13 302 Tuohy Bridget 8 303 Tuohy Margaret 5 304 Tuohy Patrick 1 Details below of that voyage for those interested published in the 'Courier' 18th June 1853. THE JOHN FIELDEN The event of the week in Brisbane on 18th June, 1853, had been the arrival of the John Fielden. This vessel was of 916 tons register, arrived in Moreton Bay on 11th June 1853 after a run of ninety days from Liverpool, and had on board Dr. M. E. B. Nicholson, surgeon-superintendent, and 306 Government Immigrants. Of the latter there were 73 married couples, 102 single women, 19 single men, 42 males from 1 to 14 years, 76 females from 1 to 14 years, and 14 infants. The " Courier," in referring to the immigrants, said : "The large number of single women and girls makes it highly desirable for all persons requiring female servants to apply for them forthwith, so that no excuse for cutting off our supply of immigration may again be taken," from the fact of numbers remaining in the depot. The immigrants by the John Fielden who reached the sheltered waters of the Bay on 11th June, 1853 and who remain to us yet, good citizens of the young State, will let memory go back to the delays in Moreton Bay which were the experience of all shipmasters and passengers fifty years ago. The "Courier" was not slow to note that the captain of the John Fielden broke his windlass in heaving up his second anchor in the Bay, and it takes a theme, too, from a correspondent's letter of the same date to administer a sharp lecture "on the necessity for an improvement in the port. It was pointed out that there was a necessity for buoying the channel ; but the fact was mentioned that the buoys laid down were being lost, probably owing to quick- sands. The " Courier" advocated a light- house, with a lightship inside, and on board the latter a pilot with a strong crew and two lifeboats to assist ships coming in. It was pointed out that unless the port management was improved shipowners would not send their vessels to Moreton Bay, and the probability of this was emphasized by the fact that the demand for tonnage in England was greater than the supply.
