Hugh Mackay and Mary Brennan emigrated from Westmeath Ireland possibly on the John Renwick in 1841 with Mary’s brother Thomas Brennan and his wife Catherine Coughlan. Always looking for the Mackay families, around Esk, the Five Mile Waters and finally settled near Harrisville at a property called Thorn Hill. Oldest son farmed on the Darling Downs while my great grandfather Bernard (Barney) Mackay farmed the Thorn Hill property. He married Isabella McGrath, daughter of Darby McGrath and Mary Cecilia Connolly. Last post prior to moving to Groups Io. Anne

Hi It is March 2nd that the Rootsweb lists are closing (not Feb 2nd). And am aware of the new lists. Advise on some lists has been, and since the Rootsweb list archives are (supposedly) remaining in place, is for people to make use of the opportunity to post their last messages so that they are there to bee seen in the future. Hi Chris There is a new list for Qld over on Groups.io. Feel free to join here https://groups.io/g/AUS-QLD and post your message on that list too. I am surprised your message came through on Rootsweb as we were told it was being closed as of 3 Feb 2020. Am researching the above names, some of which started in Melbourne Victoria, but all eventually ended up in or around Rockhampton, Queensland. The BARRY and MAHONEY families came from Ireland. The EVAN's came from Hereford in England and the PRICE's came from London. My website at http://www.chrismahoney.co.nz/ has more details on these families.

A suggestion regarding the new groups.io group; on the Rootsweb Listowners group, a discussion occurred regarding the transferring/replacement of Rootsweb mailing lists with groups.io groups, and, from my understanding, it was kind of informally agreed, that it would be a good idea, for people setting up new groups on the groups.io facility, to replace existing Rootsweb mailing lists, to include (as I have done with such groups that I have created, on the groups.io facility) in the group description of each new group, a statement explicitly stating that the group "is a transfer (or replacement) of the Rootsweb <mailing list name> mailing list"", or something similar, so that people who come along later, can search, using the "Find a group" facility" for particular migrated Rootsweb mailing lists -> groups; so, my suggestion is that the group description be amended, to include such an explicit statement. Of course, as the group owner, it is your choice, whether you implement this suggestion, but, I thought that I should make the suggestion. -- Bret Busby Armadale West Australia .............. We have just put up photos and transcriptions from the Herberton pioneer cemetery which operated from 1880 to 1885. Herberton is beautiful hilly town on the Wild river, on the tablelands west of Cairns. It has a history of tin mining. There is only one surviving headstone, but there has been a wonderful local effort to identify all those buried there including there being a noticeboard in the cemetery with newspaper clippings of those buried there. There is also a larger 'modern' cemetery dating from the time the pioneer cemetery was closed. It seems the old one was too close to town and too close to a rich tin vein. Please seehttps://www.chapelhill.homeip.net/FamilyHistory/Photos/Herberton_pioneer-Rose_lane/ We have also transcribed a few headstones from the large and historic Cooktown cemetery, but way short of the hundreds of surviving headstones from the thousands buried there. Please seehttps://www.chapelhill.homeip.net/FamilyHistory/Photos/Cooktown/ All the headstone photos and search tool can be found at: https://www.chapelhill.homeip.net/FamilyHistory/Photos/ [1] Thank you to all our users over the years who have spotted and reported the errors that inevitably occur or who possess additional information to help us decipher the more illegible headstones.
