    3. Hello Elizabeth and Warren, Yes, I know how frustrating it is to hit these brick walls as I have with my grt grandfather John Michael Heffernan, who I've been trying to find for probably the last 10 years now. As I'm pretty sure he and Eliza Greenhalgh didn't marry there is no certificate and even on the children's birth certificates there is nothing about him. I have spent many hours trying a lot of the obscure sources for any little bit of info - last year I reached saturation point with it but think now I will just have to move on and not be able to go any further with researching that line. The only thing I can tell you about my Catherine Kennedy is that she was born ca 1793 Sydney, died 20/8/1876 Castlereagh, married 30/3/1815 Patrick McCann. Her parents were: Donald Kennedy born ca. 1756 Inverness Scotland, died 9/6/1829 Castlereagh, buried St Patricks R/C Nth Parramatta. He Arrived 7/10/1792 "Royal Admiral" as a convict. His wife was Ann Grant, they were married in Inverness, she was born ca. 1770 Inverness, died 3/5/1827 Castlereagh, buried St Patricks also. Donald was a soldier in NSW corp and a farmer on his land grant at Penrith. He was a pioneer of the area so there is lots of information about him in various places, however I don't know anything more about Catherine. Regards, Kerry. Hello Kerry and Warren, The older one gets in life, the easier it is to accept that one can't have everything. Bother!!! Catherine - I wonder who her Scots family was - seems to have had an unhappy time in the few years she spent here. I have totally enjoyed all the time and research and world-wide chats through the "net" with people, who are/could be/may be not/definitely not... connected to my extended family. Considering how long I have been researching family history, almost 40 years, I feel I have acquired a huge amount of information about many, many people to whom I have a connection, one way or another. Catherine Kennedy is my sole Scots connection, whereas my children and grandchildren have so much Scots ancestry through their father and his paternal line, they should have been born wearing kilts in the MacGregor tartan.!!! The biggest surprise for me was to find my Mother's maternal family came from connections in the Channel Islands, mainly Alderney, and then back to Normandy in France. I knew about the Channel Island connections, but not the French. I am so sorry Mum and her Sisters and Brothers did not survive to enjoy what I have discovered - I'm sure they could have contributed much more, and they had been told they had French ancestry, but they didn't know if that was the truth or a fib, so assumed the latter. Miserable damp grey day here - it must be winter!! Elizabeth

    3. Hello Kerry and Warren, Maybe its the name "Catherine" that is the problem - we are both searching for info regarding that name!! Did the surname "Greenhalgh" always stay way, or might it have corrupted to "Greenop" - I knew a family with the latter surname many, many years ago. Happy hunting for your Catherine. When the NSW Govt. decided to release all the historical BDM records to the public, probably in the 1960s, they gave the original records to inmates of the Gaols, to give them something useful to do by transcribing the records ready to go onto microfiche. This turned out to be a great debacle, and quite a lot of those early translations are quite incorrect. I have not heard whether the old records were re-transcribed, or we are still stuck with the wrong ones - I suspect the latter, but hope not. I started our family history searches in about 1975, as I can remember leaving my two small children with my mother while I spent a few hours at the Mitchell Library, or at one of the numerous Mormon Libraries, in my case which was in the Lane Cove area. Happy hunting, Elizabeth.
