    1. [PJ] Port Jackson convict Michael Fogarty ( "Minerva" 1821 )
    2. Andrew Fogarty
    3. Hello, Lesley and Listers, I will set out some information here about the Port Jackson convict Michael Fogarty who arrived by the "Minerva" in 1821. The details now submitted are largely a repetition of points I have stated at this forum in the past. Does anyone out there claim descent from the Irish convict Michael Fogarty ( "Minerva" 1821 )? Does anyone have a Michael and Mary Fogarty in their lineage who look as if they might be the couple whose 1845 marriage is cited hereunder? -- -- // -- -- -- Michael Fogarty was tried in February 1821 at the Central Criminal Court ( "the Old Bailey" ) in London. The court record had his surname as Fogerty. He was convicted of pickpocketing and sentenced to transportation for life. Michael Fogarty arrived at Port Jackson by the "Minerva" on 16th December that year. The indent had his surname as Fogherty and his age as 25. It said he was a seaman from King`s County -- known to the Irish as Offaly. -- -- // -- -- -- I have examined a record of this man`s trial at the Old Bailey website which says the defendant claimed to have bought the property which was the subject of the charge "of a sailor at Blackwall". Blackwall was a London docks area. It seems reasonable to suppose that Michael Fogarty was a crewman of a ship berthed in London when arrested. -- -- // -- -- -- I have obtained copies of some records involving this man which are cited in the index to the Colonial Secretary`s papers. -- -- // -- -- -- Michael Fogarty petitioned the Governor on various occasions seeking permission to marry. According to my reckoning, he lodged six applications during 1827-33 involving a total of four women and some of the applications were successful but none of the proposed marriages eventuated. It seems there was a lapse in Michael Fogarty`s marriage applications from 1833 until 1845. He spent some time in prison during that period awaiting trial for murder. -- -- // -- -- -- In 1845, with the permission of the Governor, our man married Mary Anne Green, said to have come free to the Colony and apparently not one of those targeted in the 1827-33 petitions. The marriage was celebrated according to Church of England rites in the Parish of All Saints in the County of Camden. Michael Fogarty was conditionally pardoned in 1847. -- -- // -- -- -- I know nothing thereafter about Michael Fogarty. I know nothing about his wife after the 1845 marriage. I have not identified any descent from Michael Fogarty or Mary Anne Green. Regards to all, Andrew Fogarty Casino N.S.W.

    2.   Hello,   Have you identified Mary Anne Green. Probably NOT the right one, but I know of one Mary Green who was very early here. She had come as daughter of one of the First Free Settlers (settled at Liberty Plains) and she married there a young convict carpenter by the name of Green. She came late 1700s but I have no dates offhand.   I know this particular Mary had a number of marriages .. one husband drowned, one hung himself. Also, if that's not "your" Mary, I'd be interested if anyone here knows any more about that Mary Green who came with the first free settlers.   She was granted land in her own right as a settler as she perhaps 'came of age' or something - and that land was immediately west of the present day Concord West railway station (don't know if she really ever lived there or not).
