Listers I have recently read the VDL convict details of John Smith 'Fame'/ 'Pilot' to VDL 1816/17. Con 3-1-38 entry no 53 As he was for a time a PJ convict before being sent on to VDL on the 'Pilot', I am hoping I may get some help from this list. According to his convict details, he was to be sent from VDL to Newcastle for "taking a boat and a smaller boat both property of the crown" on the 16th May 1818. I am not able to read everything on the document not even the no of years of his sentence in Newcastle, could be 6?? He also received 100 lashes. Where is it possible to find further info about his time in Newcastle?? I am not sure how to access any available records. If John went to Newcastle, he was back in PD by 1824 as his first child was born in April 1825, he then married Ann Grant, 'Lord Wellington' / 'Jupiter' to Hobart, in Oct 1825 & together they had 2 more children. On John Smith's convict record doc above, in Dec 1830 he was charged with "killing a sheep with intent to steal part of the carcass". He was to appear in the VDL Supreme Court to answer charges but John disappeared into the bush. Some details of the investigation of his death/ murder are recored on Manuscript 3251 VDL 1821-1862 box 2 vol 5 Dec 1837 page 41 which makes interesting reading. kaye Sutton
