Colin Kennedy, Lesley Uebel's husband, has asked me to pass on the sad news that Lesley was diagnosed in mid-October with an untreatable, incurable and terminal brain tumour and is now in the final stages of succumbing to its effects. For some time Lesley has been unable to read, write or use her computer and she ultimately decided to shut down her site and give up the lists. Colin is working to ensure that all the Claim a Convict data finds a permanent home and will ensure that the listers are informed of this location when it is finalised. Lesley sends her thanks and gratitude to all those with whom she has worked over the past 15 years or so and leaves the world of convict ancestry with a heavy heart but a real sense of achievement. She sends her love to all. Regards, Coralie cdhird@optusnet.com.au
To Colin, Thank you for sharing a wonderful treasure with us, the Australian convict descendants of the world. We are all more knowledgeable and grateful, thanks to a fantastic and generous lady. She has become part of our lives and we wish her a dignified peace. Lesley's research will be a lasting testament to her. Sandra Please pass this on, Coralie.
This is very sad news. My thoughts are with you and your family, Sincerely, Patsy Holdsworth Essex England. What sad, sad news. Lesley has given us all so much help and support with our family history research and has been an "icon" of the Rootsweb lists. I wish Lesley and Colin peace in the coming months. What terrible news, what a huge loss for the researching community. Lesley had made a huge contribution to all of us, and I for one am so grateful to her. Thank you Coralie, What sad news for Lesley and Colin. I have been a member of these lists for many years now although I have not made contribution lately due to my own indifferent health. I do watch the lists though and as Lesley and I share a birthday on 6th March I am always in contact with her then. Lesley took away any stigma that many of the listers felt at having been descended from convicts and for that I especially admire and thank her. I also thank her for the compassion that she gave when I lost my eldest daughter Lisa to cancer a few years ago. One of my fondest memories are the picnics that we all attended as a group. Coralie and Wayne were there as were many more of you. Thank you Lesley and may your journey be peaceful and painless. You will be missed so much. Love Shirley McLeod It is indeed sad for us all and especially Colin. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Coralie Hird" <cdhird@optusnet.com.au> To: <aus-pt-jackson-convicts@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, December 29, 2013 11:36 AM Subject: [PJ] LESLEY UEBEL > > Colin Kennedy, Lesley Uebel's husband, has asked me to pass on the sad > news > that Lesley was diagnosed in mid-October with an untreatable, incurable > and > terminal brain tumour and is now in the final stages of succumbing to its > effects. Condolences to Colin & family. I have very fond memories of when the list first started & we all excitedly exchanged information & ideas. :) The claim-a-convict page was a great idea of Lesley's, where we found new relatives, that we might not of found otherwise. Thanks Coralie, for informing us of Lesley's sad passing. Kind regards, Sherrie. -- http://www.silkweb.com.au/
Hi Sherrie, lots of years past since we caught up. Lesley is still with us and would love to hear your kind thoughts and would appreciate so much your sentiment. All being well, I will visit Lesley and Colin on Tuesday. I think Sherrie that last time we met you were expecting a baby. No doubt all grown up now! :) Best regards, Wayne Carter flora.1@bigpond.com -------------------------------------------------- From: "Sherrie Blackman" <silkweb@tpg.com.au> Sent: Sunday, December 29, 2013 5:22 PM To: <aus-pt-jackson-convicts@rootsweb.com>; "Coralie Hird" <cdhird@optusnet.com.au> Subject: Re: [PJ] LESLEY UEBEL > > Condolences to Colin & family. > > I have very fond memories of when the list first started & we all > excitedly exchanged information > & ideas. :) > > The claim-a-convict page was a great idea of Lesley's, where we found new > relatives, that we might > not of found otherwise. > > Thanks Coralie, for informing us of Lesley's sad passing. > > Kind regards, > Sherrie. > > > > -- > http://www.silkweb.com.au/ > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > AUS-PT-JACKSON-CONVICTS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' > without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
Hi everyone, Apologies to the list. Just finished 4 night shifts and skimming through my emails. Should know better. ;) Needless to say, I'm still shocked at Lesley's condition. :( Wayne, gosh you have a good memory. Yes I think we met up at Cherrybrook one time and another, tramping through St John's Cemetery at Parramatta. Our eldest is now 15yrs old and the others 12, 10 & 8. ;) I've now clocked up 11 yrs at RNSH. lol Kind regards, Sherrie. It was many many years ago that Lesley first helped me unlock some of my convict past. We met at the Hawkesbury Reunion several years later and since then she had been a fountain of knowledge both on the PJ and Hawkesbury lists. As my own husband lies in Intensive Care, I understand the anguish and heartache that Colin and her family are going through at this time, I wish them the very best as Lesley prepares to fight her most difficult battle. She has been the inspiration to so many and given such encouragement to those looking for their convict past. "Carpe diem" Sincerely Julie Webb Gold Coast
Such devastating news, so sad, so unfair. Thank you Coralie for letting us know. If I could say anything to Lesley and Colin at this time it would be a heartfelt thank you, well done, and Godspeed. We've had our ups and downs, thankfully more ups, but it needs to be said that Lesley has been a shining beacon for convict research for me and so many others, and genealogy will be very much the poorer for losing her treasurehouse of convict and historical knowledge and research expertise. I am so grateful that I found the PJ list all those years ago and with Lesley's help, a heap of convict ancestors. It's been such an enjoyable & interesting journey with Lesley providing help, suggestions and background along the way. There has been never a dull moment on the PJ list, and I love that we're always learning. Lesley will be so sorely missed and as others have said, I hope her website will be able to continue. She put an extraordinary amount of time and work into Claim A Convict, and her indexing work, and it has helped so many people. May Claim A Convict long remain as a tribute to Lesley and her achievements. I am yet another of many who has benefited from Lesley's knowledge and website on convicts in Sydney and found many answers about my convicts, which was really helpful from this distance. I've only just recently come back to the list after a break while travelling and it felt like coming home again. I wish Lesley and her family much joy in her last days, comfort for the family in her passing in the knowledge that her work is so appreciated by so many and a safe journey for her to join her ancestors.
