Hi Barbara, >From the CD "Index of Colonial Convict Movements 1827 to 1853" produced by the Descendents of Convicts Group, Thomas DUCKWORTH arrived in the Colony on the Eliza 4 and was later transported to Norfolk Island on the Lucy Anne on 03/05/1830. Under "Remarks" is the Statement "Properly Ironed". The references are Page 340, Location 4/3596, Reel # 1062 which I feel sure refers to the NSW Records Office location of the original information. I could not find a reference as to his return. By this stage ie 1830 Properly Ironed is likely to mean he was wearing broad leg-irons ones with an approximately 5 cms cuff made of flat iron not the standard round leg irons which could be made oval and slipped off. There were instructions 1829-30 (published in HRA) about convicts in heavy iron gangs having to wear the broad cuffed leg-irons to prevent escape and there was correspondence later about some still not wearing the proper leg irons. I have James DINGLE, sentenced to Norkfolk Island in 1830. He managed to escape in May 1833. Does anyone have a source that might help me know whether or not the found him, and what happened afterwards? Rosalee -in Newcastle, where its raining !
