Hello Listers, I am making some progress with my search for my G G Grandfathers roots. I am waiting for a trial transcript from the Kent Archives service but they are having some processing problems it seems. Charles Fredrick Gilbert, tried at the Kent Assizes on 12th March 1838 for burglary (simple), sentenced to transportation for life. Born circa 1816 somewhere in Kent, occupation Groom, able to read and write. Charles arrived Port Jackson aboard the Earl Grey (2) on 21/11/1838, Australian records say Fredrick Charles Gilbert, crime housebreaking. The first ticket of leave I have found is 4th July 1846 and states 'allowed to remain in the employ of Mr John Lord Ellerby at Richmond River', I believe this may have been on a large sheep property? The second one I have found is dated 12th November 1848 and states ' same as preceding'. I have not found any further TOL`s or any pardon etc but he was in Sydney by the birth of his fifth child in 1857. Charles married Charlotte Gilbert, born 1832 Grantham Lincolnshire, arrived free with parents on the Briton in 1844, they married on 29th August 1847 at Clarence River and had nine children, first four born at Clarence and Richmond River, next five at Chippendale/Redfern Sydney. I am wondering if maybe Charles received a pardon? I am descended from his daughter Charlotte Gilbert who married James Robert Meyers and their daughter Barbara who married William Austin Chater. If anyone on the list has any information on Charles or his background or descendants I would love to hear from you. Many thanks Dorothy
Hi Dorothy, There are three mentions of him on the 'free settler or Fellon' web page. Sometimes you can find more, by searching the chap he was assigned to, as well.
