Joan, Your Mary Bateman would have known my 5xgreat grandmother, Mary Wade, as she was also on the /Lady Juliana/ (at 11 years of age being the youngest female convict to be transported) and went to Norfolk Is. My family history book "Mary Wade to Us" states that the /Lady Juliana/ arrived in Sydney Cove on 6/6/1790 with the convicts disembarking on 11/6/1790. As the /Lady Juliana /was unfit to continue on to Norfolk Is, soon after disembarking, 150 of the younger and healthier women were boarded onto the /Surprise/ and arrived in Norfolk Is 7/8/1790. The landing of people and goods on the island was hazardous and when the /Surprise/ was disembarking her convicts, one boat load of women and stores capsized in the heavy surf, with 7 lives being lost and the boat smashed to pieces. (our Mary's would most likely have witnessed the incident) Most of the women were assigned to non-convict men. Before leaving Norfolk Is and returning to Sydney, Mary Wade gave birth to two children (convict father) - Sarah, my 4xgreat grandmother, and William, Kevin Rudd's 4xgreat grandfather.
