I'm having a little trouble settling on the John ALLAN who married the widower Jane EDWARDS (nee FLETCHER) in 1815 at St Matthew's, Windsor, and her first husband Rowland EDWARDS was murdered at the Parramatta Toll House in 1814. The NSW Colonial Secretary Index lists the following items for 'ALLEN, John. Per "Anne", 1810' - 1815 Jan 27 Re permission to marry Jane Edwards at Windsor (Reel 6004; 4/3493 p.431) - 1817 Nov 24 Husband of widow of Rowland Edwards of Cornwallis; mentioned in petition of Samuel Tapster, servant of late Rowland Edwards for mitigation of sentence (Fiche 3181; 4/1853 p.328) The 1821 muster gives me where tried: Guildford, When tried: Aug 1808, Sentence: Life Emancipated. How disposed of: Landholder, Richmond, In colony. I'm not sure John stayed the 'landholder' of his wife's land, as in the 1828 census his wife (listed as Jane FLETCHER as she arrived in the colony) is the landholder, and there was disputation in the Sydney Gazette over ownership between the EDWARDS children and John ALLAN that was settled around this time. But I can't find John ALLAN in the 1828 census, and was wondering if anyone had any information on John ALLAN, perhaps from his 'permission' to marry in 1815? Many thanks, matt -- Matthew D. Hi Matt, I am interested in any Allen / Allan families associated with early Australian Colonial times, as I have a brick wall with my Allen family ancestors which I am trying to knock down. The 1828 Census shows Jane as a widow, and as she married John Allen, she should only have been shown as such if John had died. The youngest Allen child is shown as 8 months old, so John would have logically died in late 1826, 1827 or 1828. Jane has the Allen children living with her in the 1828 census. I am wondering whether John had any children by a previous marriage, as Jane did. I am trying to determine the father of three Allen boys who were born in the colony, and who were referred to as youths in 1834 in an article in the Sydney Gazette. They (apparently) do not appear in the 1828 census in the list of Allens. Their names were Henry, Joseph and Benjamin.
