My convict ancestor, William LONGMAN, arrived in 1828 on the Marquis of Hastings. William received his Certificate of Freedom in Decmeber 1834, at the expiration of his 7 year sentence. I haven't found any record of a TOL for William, so I'm wondering if any convict scholars would impute anything to the absence of a TOL. I haven't located any record of any Colonial misdeeds during his term, but I'm curious if the lack of a TOL might be an indication that he was less than perfectly behaved? Thanks. Pete
Hi Peter One reason may be is that he was happy working for the person to whom he was assigned and therefore did not see a need to obtain a TOL. The Indent states he was assigned to Robert Crawford of Prospect although I cannot find William on the 1828 NSW Census. Thanks Lesley I didn't find him on the 1828 Census either! I'm uncovering a pattern of behaviour that shows a likeness for 'the demon drink' so I suspected he may have played up, but have no evidence to support that.
