Hello Leslie all, Re "and I think it may be the same person" - same bloke I reckon, and he was a wonderful artist too (leaving us with many fine views of those times). Lycett did die in Birmingham and a penciled note in a copy of his "Views" in the State Library is said to state how when in the hospital there after his arrest he tore open the wound and thus completed the killing of himself. However, this has not confirmed as far as I am aware. I am interested to know what buildings PJ readers can indentify in his Sydney Cove 1810s painting: [1]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5737284/lycett-sydney-cove.jpg ( I think this is one of this ones that is 'coming home' soon?). This view is looking east over Sydney Cove, of course. Note the two sharp drops he has skillfully depicted (without actually showing them); one just in front of the figures and one further on towards the cove. This is either looking towards ca. where Cadman's Cottage is .. or perhaps looking toward a little further north from there ?? I am interested in that I used to work at the 'second drop', a former quarry face (where the Mining Museum building was later constructed). Cheers, John Byrnes (Sydney) ~~~~~~~~ On Tue Oct 18 15:15 , Lesley Uebel sent: Hi Wayne Thank you. It was also mentioned in one of the papers yesterday or Sunday and I noted they had Joseph arriving in the wrong year. When Joseph was in Newcastle Gov. Macquarie stated that he was "to be strictly watched at Newcastle as he was notorious for forgeries" He received an Absolute Pardon in 1821 and left the colony in 1822 with his daughters. The Monitor, dated 16 April 1828 - and I think it may be the same person FORGED NOTES.-Last week the constables of Birmingham proceeded to the house of an engraver, named Lycett, in Bath-row, in that town, to search for forged notes, and in one of the upstairs rooms found newly-prepared £1. plate, of the Stourbridge and Bramsgrove Bank, with a facsimile of the signature, entry, number, and date. Lycett, alarmed at the consequences, cut his throat; but he was removed, to the hosptital, and it is expected he will recover. His daughter, who was found with him in the house, is also in custody. Slow learner :) but great artist Regards Lesley [2]http://www.claimaconvict.net/index.html CLAIM A CONVICT email: [3][email protected] On 18/10/2011 4:03 PM, flora.1 wrote: >> THE State Library of NSW has won its campaign to bring a unique album of 35 convict era watercolours ''home'' to Australia after paying $1.75 million at an auction in Canada in the early hours of yesterday.< > > Read more: [4]http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/art-and-design/library-pays-175m-fo r-historical-album-20111017-1lt8e.html#ixzz1b6fdAy61 > > [5]http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/art-and-design/library-pays-175m-fo r-historical-album-20111017-1lt8e.html ---------------------- To send a message to the Port Jackson Convicts List, send an email to [6][email protected] ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [7][email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ) References 1. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5737284/lycett-sydney-cove.jpg 2. file://localhost/tmp/parse.pl?redirect=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claimaconvict.net%2Findex.html 3. javascript:top.opencompose('[email protected]','','','') 4. file://localhost/tmp/parse.pl?redirect=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.smh.com.au%2Fentertainment%2Fart-and-design%2Flibrary-pays-175m-for-historical-album-20111017-1lt8e.html%23ixzz1b6fdAy61 5. file://localhost/tmp/parse.pl?redirect=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.smh.com.au%2Fentertainment%2Fart-and-design%2Flibrary-pays-175m-for-historical-album-20111017-1lt8e.html 6. javascript:top.opencompose('[email protected]','','','') 7. javascript:top.opencompose('[email protected]','','','')
