    1. Re: [PJ] Help needed for James BYRNE per Augusta Jessie 1840

    3. Parents - not really. I am trying to see if this James Byrne could be 'my' James Byrne who's mother was widowed convict Esther Byrne per Asia 1830. Esther had a child with her and at first I thought this was James, but his younger brother gives 'born at sea' as his place of birth so I suspect this unnamed child was Robert. That still leaves James' arrival unaccounted. I hadn't though to look in convict arrivals until just now. James Byrne per Augusta Jessie is a possible candidate with the right age and place of birth but I can't find him after his TOL in 1844 for further confirmation. My James married in 1852, had four sons and died in 1858 but none of these documents give any clue that he may have been a convict. His death cert suggests he had been in the colony 25 years there are many incorrect details on that doc so 25 years may not be accurate.   Since my posting I have discovered that the James Burne who died in April 1847 at Maitland whose age is given as 31 is actually James Burns per Exmouth who arrived in 1831.  He is shown as TL [Ticket of Leave] on the inquest report and the Convict death index supplies the rest of his details which rule him.   Jenny From: Patricia McGill <[email protected]> >To: Jenny W <[email protected]>; [email protected] >Sent: Saturday, 8 October 2011 2:33 PM >Subject: Re: [PJ] Help needed for James BYRNE per Augusta Jessie 1840 > >Jenny >I can't offer any suggestions as to what happened to your James Byrne but do you have any parental details for him? > >Patricia >----- Original Message ----- From: "Jenny W" <[email protected]> >To: <[email protected]> >Sent: Thursday, October 06, 2011 11:47 PM >Subject: [PJ] Help needed for James BYRNE per Augusta Jessie 1840 > > >Is anyone on the list researching James BYRNE born 1825, Dublin who aged 15, was transported for 7 years on the Augusta Jessie in 1840. There was another man by the same name on the ship. I suspect James was one of the 'junior convicts' who the ships surgeon mentions in his journal were off loaded at Sydney before the Augusta Jessie headed to Norfolk Island. > >I have only been able to find a Ticket of Leave no. 1844/1001 issued to James BYRNE in 1844 for the Scone district. From here the trail goes cold. I have been unable to find a certificate of freedom for him nor have I been able to find him on the index of convicts who died while serving their sentence. The NSW BDM for the period 1844 to 1850 doesn't show a death for him either. There is a burial for a James BURNES in 1847 aged 31 but if this is him then he would [presumably] have served his sentence and should have a cert of freedom. > >Can anyone offer some suggestions as to what became of this young lad? > >Thanks, > >Jenny [Brisbane] > >---------------------- >To send a message to the Port Jackson Convicts List, send an email to >[email protected] >------------------------------- >To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > >
