Hi Janine >From Peter Mayberry's Irish Convict site: A Catherine Byrne, aged 19 arrived in Australia in 1839 on Minerva (2). Catherine was a kitchen maid from Kildare County, tried at Dublin, convicted for the crime of 'robbery house' , and sentenced to 7 years transportation. CF 46/1029 Good luck with your research! The Aust Death Index lists Harriet White’s death place as Castlereagh which some descendants have read as Castlereagh Street, Sydney. As Harriet lived on a few different farms west of Sydney - around Parramatta, Windsor etc, I assumed the Death Index referred to the district rather than the street. I could be wrong & would be glad to be corrected if anyone knows better. My Catherine Byrne was sentenced to 7 years in Dublin, and transported on the Minerva I think in 1839 for stealing bedclothes, do you think that may be her? She was 19 years old. Hello listers I was wondering if anyone has any information on a William Bartle who was born in Yorkshire about 1810 and convicted at York on 21 March 1829. He arrived in Sydney on the Morley later that year. I would like to know his place and date of both his birth and death. Brian
Afternoon Rhonda, had a quick look. In 1837 muster, I found a James McCormack, aged 34 (when tried?) allocated to ....McArthur at Goulburn. In 1863-4 electoral roll there was a James McCormack at Red Ground, Black Springs, NSW. This is near Oberon. In 1851-52, there is James McCormick in a dwelling house in Kent Street, Sydney >From a couple of family trees on Ancestry, if his wfe is Bridget Lynch, and if he came from County Cavan, then they appear to have settled in Goulburn and that is where he died. If this is the 'right' one, then I can see what other information is available. Regards, Natalie. Hi all, Is there anyone out there who has information on John McMahon, b c 1801 County Clare, tried 1830 Clare, 'cow stealing', 7 years, per "Jane 1", Certificate of Freedom 23 Apr 1838? He was married to Catherine Barry in Ireland and she and their daughter came to Australia in 1838. I understand he was assigned to George Sutter of "Brucedale" at Peel. Does anyone know what happened to him after Brucedale, did he return to Ireland or stay in Australia and when and where did he die? What happened to Catherine? Regards, Charlotte
Hi Laraine Perhaps there is a connection between our Redmonds in Ireland as I believe that Margaret came from Tipperary, but I'm afraid I don't know of it. I have been totally in the dark about Margaret Redmond and John MacFarlane and am hoping this list may help me. Sorry Verna
Elizabeth can you contact me off list please.I have date on Edward Redmond. Did Margaret Redmond have a connection to Edward Redmond, who seems to have come here from Ireland as a convict in 1799? If he only had a 7 year sentence, Edward would have been free by 1806. My Irish convict ancestor, Denis Hogan who came from Ireland in 1834 as a convict with a 7 year sentence, was assigned to Edward Redmond. Apart from Denis being a convict from Tipperary, I know nothing about his life and family in Ireland. My father never discussed his ancestry, which included Denis and the two Marjoram convicts from Suffolk. It is quite possible his parents did not use the word "convict" when discussing people. I have been lucky with the Marjorams and know heaps about them, but Denis leaves me with a "blank" page, apart from the fact that he was a shoemaker in Sydney. He died in August, 1850 in Sydney, aged about 33, and had two sons to carry on the line, both who had large families. Liz Walker. Hi Verna, Yes, they were both convicts. Margaret Redmond arrived on the Elizabeth II in 1828 - a lifer and John McFarlane arrived on the Minerva I (4) in 1824. When Margaret applied for permission to marry in 1831, John had served his 7 year sentence and was therefore free. John McFarlane per the Minerva is listed as John McFarlaine in the 1828 NSW Census and working as a Tailor for John Wood in Hunter Street Sydney, Regards Lesley Uebel http://www.claimaconvict.net/index.html CLAIM A CONVICT email: ckennedy@bigpond.net.au On 1/07/2013 9:10 PM, Verna Bode wrote: > Hello I have just joined this list, hoping to find someone doing research on > John MacFarlane and Margaret Redmond , married in 1831 and living in the > Cook's River = Gannon's Forest area.
