Hi Geoff, You could try TROVE - the National Library's newspaper website. It gives two accounts of a Samuel Collins in 1871 and 1872 being sent to gaol - one for assaulting a constable. Perhaps that is why he was in gaol. Hi Sandra, I have just found the property after searching through the Historical Parish Maps on the Lands Dept website. It was actually at Dural, on the corner of Old Northern Road and Galston Road - 100 acres, and adjoining the property of William Hobbs. The owner is noted as Timothy Diggins, and from info in the Col. Sec. Correspondence, it appears that he was the son of an old soldier - so now need to look elsewhere. I haven't yet found whether there is a connection to the Ann Diggins of the Experiment, 1804 Thanks for your help. Hello Can anyone please supply details of William Allen, 38yrs, (i.e.) born c 1834, R.C., Limerick, who arrived Australia on the "Castilian" in 1872? I would be most appreciative of any help. Regards Judy
Thank you all so very much for all the response and welcome suggestions. I know this is not a unique event for all who enjoy this addictive pastime, but I have followed up many of your suggestions which has raised other Samuel Collins’ I was not aware of. For brevity I was aware of the following voyages to Van Diemans Land- Marion (with 2 on board), John Calvin and the Siren and I have found that there is another Samuel who left there in 1850 after arriving in the “Waverley” ( no record of him ever being on board). For voyages to Port Jackson, I know of the “Norfolk” and “Marquis of Huntley” and I am aware from a previous response from Lesley that the Samuel on the “Marquis” died a few years after arrival and there is a voyage to Newcastle of the “Neptune” in 1853 which also carried a Samuel Collins. When I revisited the Gaol records which started this thread, I have also found yet another Samuel Collins who also entered the gaol in March 1866, was a Jew but was 50 years old and arrived on the “William”- unfortunately I cannot find a Samuel on the “Castle Forbes”. Sorry to impose this on the forum but all suggestions will be greatly accepted and I will seek assistance from the Library of Tasmania for the fate etc. of the VDL names- thank you all Regards Geoff Collins

Hi Pam, Thanks for that information. I knew I had to go to State records as I did before but I was blowed if I could remember just what I had and how to get it before that step. Thanks again, Barbara.
Hello all, I seem to have lost a convict record and cannot recall where I originally found it regarding my twice great grandfather James Carter. Not long after his arrival in 1829 he absconded from a work gang at Parramatta and was sent to Norfolk Island for a period of three years. Can anyone tell me where I can again find details about his journey from NSW to Norfolk Island and return. I do recall he used an alias of Pentecost on at least one leg of the outward or return trip and I hope to prove this was his mother's maiden name. Many thanks, Barbara.
Hi Barbara, If your Corrigan is on the same side of your family as James Carter, and if they were connected to the coachmen Corrigans, I am wondering whether you may have a connection to the John Allen alias Cole/Penticost who arrived on the Hercules in 1832, tried Kent? Were your Carter's in the Sutton Forest area? Hi Listers, I am seeking information on the location of a property at Castle Hill which was granted to William Hobbs in 1831. The description of the grant (per Trove) indicates it adjoined a property owned by a Mr Diggins. I would like to determine where that property was located, and also determine whether Mr Diggins may have been related to the Ann Diggins, convict of the Experiment 1804. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards, Warren Diggins

Hi Lesley Thanks one again for your input- I again revisited the site I found it and, yes, it does state what I outlined but it does give so many doubts as to why information, which we are unfortunately forced to accept, can be so wrong. The fact that this entry stated that he was a Jew really fitted into family folklore which has always said that there is a Jewish relationship in the family history. I actually was privileged to have Rabbi John Levi, who wrote "These are the names" look at this Samuel which was a surprise to him as he believes that he was able to list all people arriving in Australia, from their possible Jewry, and although there is a documented Samuel Collins , and his brother Abraham, winning a court case against a landlord, he is unable to assist further but believed that there would be a Ticket of Leave for him or an entry in the Archives shipping lists- unfortunately these have proven no assistance at all. Thanks again, there must be some answer to the riddle out there as if the Jewish faith does form part of my heritage, it did not go past my "beloved" Samuel.
