Hi, Just for general information, the descendants of a number of the original Afghan cameleers still live in Alice Springs, Central Australia. So if you have a family name, you may be able to find out more. Their stories have been written in a number of publications. Hi Sandra, I saw on the ABC program Landline, wild Australian camels are in demand overseas as they are thoroughbreds compared to what is available in middle eastern countries these days. Erosion caused by camels to bushland is a problem in Central Australia and they are rounded up and sent to abattoirs as camel meat is in great demand in Indonesia. regards Max ________________________________ From: Sandra Parker <Sandra@parkershouse.net> To: "aus-pt-jackson-convicts@rootsweb.com" <aus-pt-jackson-convicts@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, 16 August 2013 4:00 PM Subject: Re: [PJ] Afghan person Hi, Just for general information, the descendants of a number of the original Afghan cameleers still live in Alice Springs, Central Australia. Hi Elizabeth, the Afghan may have been one of the men imported along with camels when the telegraph pole routes and signaling equipment was installed in Australia. No doubt they weren't required to be repatriated when the project was completed as maintenance crews would have been necessary to keep it in working order. Many men who were not required on the maintenance crews took up the trade of traveling salesmen and purveyed various hard to get items to customers living well off the beaten track. I recall my mother telling me when she was a young girl living in Candelo, NSW, she was sent to the shop and came upon a group of youths intimidating an Afghan trader. A fight ensued and the Afghan deftly unwound his turban swung through the air like a whip and used it to throttle one of the youths. The youth survived strangulation and didn't bother him again. My mother had an umbrella with her and was so overcome with what she had seen she inadvertently put the tortoise shell handle in her mouth and it became struck in her throat and she was in danger of choking to death. It had to be cut in half by the local blacksmith to enable it to be extracted . Her mother was upset the umbrella had been ruined but glad her daughter had not been assaulted. regards Max Bancroft ________________________________ From: Elizabeth Walker <lizrose@tpg.com.au> To: "aus-pt-jackson-convicts@rootsweb.com" <aus-pt-jackson-convicts@rootsweb.com>; "AUS-NSW-HILLS-HAWKESBURY-HUNTER-VALLEY-L@rootsweb.com" <AUS-NSW-HILLS-HAWKESBURY-HUNTER-VALLEY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, 16 August 2013 12:11 PM Subject: [PJ] Afghan person Good afternoon all, My paternal grandmother, Adeline Hogan nee Newstead, was born at Brown's Creek near Blayney, the 9th child in a family of 11 children, 5 boys and 6 girls. According to her daughter, my Aunt Frances, Adeline's father Ben Newstead and her mother Mary Ann nee Marshall could not decide on a name for her, and during this time an Afghan salesman came by, and he was the one who selected the name Adeline. My Aunt was named after her paternal grandmother, Frances Marjoram nee Crowe from Bredfield, near Ufford in Suffolk - the wife of Robert Marjoram and mother of William Marjoram, two of my three convicts. Denis Hogan from Tipperary, was the third convict. I imagine this salesman was just one of a number of Afghans who came with camels sometime in the 1800s, brought here by someone to help travellers and explorers open up the vast interior of Australia. Hi Grahame. Thankyou very much for that link as it is marvellous. I am searching especially for Christina Sophia Lowe (nee Wilcox) 27 Sept 1877. confirming her parents is essential for me. I have applied to the Tasmanian birth deaths and marriages for a certificate but I have been waiting 3 weeks todate and am worried that they may not deliver. If they can not help me then I will look for her dad/mother link. her Father had a previous marriage also. I have this link http://www.northernmidlands.tas.gov.au/Page/Page.aspx? Page_Id=107 But the first link you gave me is excellent http://www.gouldgenealogy.com/2013/04/tasmania-birth-death- marriage-records-1803-1933-now-online/ This link I can not find Christina Sophia Lowe(nee Lowe) but need to to really get into it. I will search the Northern midlands link now. I have a www.mundia.com account which is simple but effective. It may be easier to take a look and see Christina as her birth may not be recorded. Hi Mervyn In relation to NSW BDM records pre 1856, ie, church registers, and depending where you live, you may be able to see copies or originals on microfilm at a library which holds the NSW Archives Kit, such as the Qld State Library in Brisbane. The reference from the NSW BDM Index is a direct link to those records. Saves money too. By the way I have been researching 45 years and still going strong so it does not happen overnight. I also seem to recall that early Tas BDM records can be seen online now. Certainly they have been available on microfilm for many years. Hi Gloria I don't know what to suggest. Although you state that her married name was Gray, we don't know which surname was given the child if it survived. There are no children listed on the Indent of the Sydney Cove and no Surgeon was on board and nothing is noted in the HRA as regards any children on board. You would be aware that she had a common law husband in PJ and had a few children with him? Many thanks Lesley. Have you any suggestions how I should proceed. She was tried at the Cambridge Assizes, April 1806. Arrived June 1807. So the babe was born probably while in gaol awaiting removal to a vessel. Gloria
No Gloria There is no need to send me a copy of that. Regarding my previous answer to your question, if you check the Col. Sec. Index you will find that the Hannah you were askeding about has her own entry: GRAY, Hannah. Daughter of Elizabeth Gray; age 6 1819 Apr 14 Admitted to Female Orphan Institution (Reel 6040; 4/403 p.26) So my asumption that Elizabeth was the mother of this Hannah was correct and she was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Gray nee Killett who arrived on the Nile in 1801. If you check further John Gray died in 1818 and that is the reason why this Elizabeth put this child into the Female Orphan Institution Regards Lesley Uebel http://www.claimaconvict.net/index.html CLAIM A CONVICT email: ckennedy@bigpond.net.au On 8/08/2013 5:27 PM, Gloria wrote: > Thanks Lesley, > The copy of letters seeking clemency at NA Kew of Ann Single and > Elizabeth states they were probably sisters in law. Thanks Lesley, The copy of letters seeking clemency at NA Kew of Ann Single and Elizabeth states they were probably sisters in law. I believe Elizabeth was married to Ann's brother Daniel Gray. Hi Lyn I have also found a few other court appearances for a gentleman (or gentlemen) with this name and I do believe that at least would be him, particularly those which have him as a cab driver or coachman. The 2 cases you mention could also be other crimes but the timing may have meant a delay in him being locked up which, I don't think, happened in those times- thanks for your interest. I am attempting to learn more about Elizabeth Gray , sister in law of Ann Single. Both convicted in Cambridgheshire and transported on the 'Sydney Cove in 1807. Elizabeth was pregnant when convicted.
