Quick question. I was looking through the Third Fleet indents on Ancestry, then later I believe under a different category found an entirely different document, with apparently the same information recorded. I understand that in the case of this fleet, the 'indents' are a list of anticipated convicts with subsequent additions and deletions. However, is there more than one source of indents? What is the ideal place to uncover whether more than one set of records exist (I.e. is there a source describing the various primary records and where they are held?) I'm not searching for a specific person, I've just become extremely interested in this and earlier fleets! Thanks as always, Matt Sent from my iPhone

That subject heading should, of course read Atlas not Atlass and more especially Atlas I (1). It was the first voyage of this transport to arrive in PJ. Another transport of the same name (Atlas II) arrived a few months later in October 1802. HI Barbara, Someone has claimed him on my website although I have not checked to see if that email address is still current. It appears as though Richard was transported to VDL from PJ in 1806 although I can nothing that states exactly when that happened. The next record of him is in 1811 when he was given a land grant in VDL and also stating that his secondary term had expired. Hello List, Is anyone else researching this man or his family? I would especially like to discover when he left NSW and when he arrived in Tasmania. Any help appreciated. Barbara Corrigan (Canberra ACT, Australia).
Hi Charlotte I would say not. Given that he was born about 1830 and the last 5 with that name arrived in 1838 were all adults. Hi all, JAMES DAVIS. I dont know if he was a convict or not . His daughter, Sarah Jane Davis, birth registration 1865, states his age as 35 years and birthplace Plymouth, England. Is he anywhere on any convict lists? Hoping someone can help; Regards, Charlotte
Thanks Ray and Lesley for your info. Yes, he was with the 80th regiment, then joined the NSW mounted police the year after he arrived. It was such a thrill to finally find the name of his ship! Sandra S. > Today's Topics: > > 1. Convict ship Susan (Sandra Sangster)
Hello Leslie, Is this the same 'Susan' that carried free settlers from Ireland to NSW in late 1839, arriving February 1840? That's fine Kerry, With names as reasonably common, there are many times I have thought I had the correct ones, only to find I had not! All part of the game. Hi Sandra The Susan (3) actually carried convicts to VDL arriving on the 21 November 1837 - they were all offloaded in VDL. This same vessel then married about 11 convicts from VDL to PJ arriving 24 December 1837 - most of these men had been transported to VDL on other ships and the majority of them had been originally convicted in places such as Barbados and Trinidad. The newspaper of the time state that the crew were of the 80th Regiment. I have just been sent an old newspaper site which has provided me with some great information about my gg-grandfather. I knew he arrived in PJ c1836 as a soldier on board a convict ship. Now I have found the ship, thanks to an article re his death. Susan (3) arrived PJ 23 December 1837. I have searched but can't locate any details about the soldiers on the ship. Will I find mention of these men anywhere? There is a list of the convicts, but not the soldiers. Any help appreciated. Sandra S.

Good afternoon all, My paternal grandmother, Adeline Hogan nee Newstead, was born at Brown's Creek near Blayney, the 9th child in a family of 11 children, 5 boys and 6 girls. According to her daughter, my Aunt Frances, Adeline's father Ben Newstead and her mother Mary Ann nee Marshall could not decide on a name for her, and during this time an Afghan salesman came by, and he was the one who selected the name Adeline. My Aunt was named after her paternal grandmother, Frances Marjoram nee Crowe from Bredfield, near Ufford in Suffolk - the wife of Robert Marjoram and mother of William Marjoram, two of my three convicts. Denis Hogan from Tipperary, was the third convict. I imagine this salesman was just one of a number of Afghans who came with camels sometime in the 1800s, brought here by someone to help travellers and explorers open up the vast interior of Australia. Lovely sunny day, but very nippy! Liz. Lake Macquarie.
