Hello, Can I request you ask your questions in this forum and wait for replies. You may not need a professional researcher. Cheers Ray
I don't know of anyone specific to Sydney - but you could approach one of the universities? I know that many of their history students publish their research findings. Alternatively, you have available a plethora of experienced and often gifted amateurs available through this and other websites who might happily come to your assistance - and probably do it for free. Hello Listers >From my previous message I missed two more family connections. Still more convict connections to Esther Harris daughter of convicts Joseph Harris & Hester Blaydes, Esther's daughter Mary Ann Rose born to George Rose m Phillip Armstrong, the son of two other convicts Charles Armstrong alias Charles Johnston arr: per "Almorah", m 1828 at Parramatta to Naomi Wright, she arrived as a convict 1827 per "Harmony". What an interesting family profile. Cheers Rhonda
Hello Listers Can anyone help please. I need an indent for Joseph Whitehouse sent to Tasmania 1821 on the 'Claudine' with his brother William Whitehouse. I have looked at my library Cd for Tasmania convicts but there is no indent for him recorded on that source. But he did come to NSW sometime after he had served his time as we know this because of his relationship with Esther. There are a lot of convict connections initially with Abraham Hern (Hearn) he arrived on the Glatton 11.3.1803. See (Bald Face Stag Hotel) he married Sarah Fussell, she arrived 'Friends' 10.10.1811, they had a son Charles Hearn who had a relationship with Esther Harris by which they had a son. Esther was the daughter of two convicts Joseph Harris arr 1811 'Admiral Gambier' and married Hester Blaydes arr. Broxbornebury 1814. Esther now has a relationship with Joseph Whitehouse and they have 3 daughters Hester, Susannah, & Sarah. They never married as Esther Harris finally marries George Rose 1853 at Parramatta, George's father George Rose arr Fame' 1817 and Elizabeth Portney Aka Poultney who arrived 'Indispensable' 10.1.1809. I know this is a bit convoluted with all these convict connections but its as well, otherwise we would know very little about them as people. I would appreciate any help you are able to give me. Cheers Rhonda

Hi Rhonda No JW in the 1822 Muster. But in the 1823,1824, 1825 Musters book there is a Joseph Whitehouse who came on the Mary in 1823 under a 7 year sentence. No William Whitehouse in either book. cheers Grahame On 23/10/2013, at 10:53 AM, Rhonda Brownlow wrote: > Hello Listers > I am hoping someone be able to help me please, I have looked at the bound indent for the ship and there is no physical description for Joseph Whitehouse. > I checked the musters and 1828 Census, as well for him with no success. Hi Rhonda, I cannot assist directly but it is interesting that you mention the Broxbournebury. My ancestors were Thomas Blades(convict) and his wife Sarah. Thomas arrived on the Surrey and Sarah on the Broxbournebury as a convict wife with children Caroline and Sarah. I thought that the other Blades/Blaydes on board was Esther? No relationship that I have been able to establish. I am at work at the moment but I can look up some of that info at home later tonight. I have the book which describes the voyage of the Broxbournebury (and the Emu). Hello Listers I am hoping someone be able to help me please, I have looked at the bound indent for the ship and there is no physical description for Joseph Whitehouse. I checked the musters and 1828 Census, as well for him with no success. Also checked Lesley's site Claim a Convict. He wascharged at Warwick Assises in the compnay of Joseph Cooke, Joseph Watts, Thomas Roscoe, Henry Reubottom, John Goodman, William Picken, william Bagley and William Whitehouse (possibly his brother).I am hoping that somone might have researched these other convicts that may be able to help me out please. As I havehit a brick wall as what he was like and what became of him after he arrived in 1821. I know he formed a relatinship with Esther Harris and had 3 daughters. Esther was the daughter of 2 convicts Joseph Harris (1811 'Admiral Gambier') and Elizabeth Blaydes (Broxbornebury 1814) Cheers Rhonda
Hi Rhonda, I have in my records a copy of a page from the Index to Convict Pardons for my convict who arrived in 1811 (pardon dated 1817). It shows on the far right hand side of that page the the physical description for eight out of the fifteen convicts listed aboard that convict ship. I am not sure why only some convicts have the extra details and others do not. Hi Kaye, You might find some information here. www. huntervalleygenealogy.com/ Regards. Grahame Cheers. Listers I have recently read the VDL convict details of John Smith 'Fame'/ 'Pilot' to VDL 1816/17. Con 3-1-38 entry no 53 As he was for a time a PJ convict before being sent on to VDL on the 'Pilot', I am hoping I may get some help from this list. According to his convict details, he was to be sent from VDL to Newcastle for "taking a boat and a smaller boat both property of the crown" on the 16th May 1818. I am not able to read everything on the document not even the no of years of his sentence in Newcastle, could be 6?? He also received 100 lashes. Where is it possible to find further info about his time in Newcastle?? I am not sure how to access any available records. If John went to Newcastle, he was back in PD by 1824 as his first child was born in April 1825, he then married Ann Grant, 'Lord Wellington' / 'Jupiter' to Hobart, in Oct 1825 & together they had 2 more children. On John Smith's convict record doc above, in Dec 1830 he was charged with "killing a sheep with intent to steal part of the carcass". He was to appear in the VDL Supreme Court to answer charges but John disappeared into the bush. Some details of the investigation of his death/ murder are recored on Manuscript 3251 VDL 1821-1862 box 2 vol 5 Dec 1837 page 41 which makes interesting reading. kaye Sutton ---------------------- To send a message to the Port Jackson Convicts List, send an email to AUS-PT-JACKSON-CONVICTS@rootsweb.com ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to AUS-PT-JACKSON-CONVICTS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

NO, JOHN, I have not identified Mary Anne Green who married Michael Fogarty ( "Minerva" 1821 ) in 1845. I know nothing about her beyond the skimpy details revealed in Michael Fogarty`s application for permission to marry and in the marriage registration. The Mary Green you have detailed is someone I have not encountered in my research and she does not mean anything to me. Regards, Andrew Fogarty
Thanks Andrew, That's the only two early Ann Greens I've run across. Hello John, Did your Mary Anne Marry a Powell or Rose by any chance, that is where they both had free grants. Regards Kath Have you identified Mary Anne Green. Probably NOT the right one, but I know of one Mary Green who was very early here. She had come as daughter of one of the First Free Settlers (settled at Liberty Plains) and she married there a young convict carpenter by the name of Green. She came late 1700s but I have no dates offhand. I know this particular Mary had a number of marriages .. one husband drowned, one hung himself. Also, if that's not "your" Mary, I'd be interested if anyone here knows any more about that Mary Green who came with the first free settlers. She was granted land in her own right as a settler as she perhaps 'came of age' or something - and that land was immediately west of the present day Concord West railway station (don't know if she really ever lived there or not). The details now submitted are largely a repetition of points I have stated at this forum in the past. Does anyone out there claim descent from the Irish convict Michael Fogarty ( "Minerva" 1821 )? Does anyone have a Michael and Mary Fogarty in their lineage who look as if they might be the couple whose 1845 marriage is cited hereunder? -- -- // -- -- -- Michael Fogarty was tried in February 1821 at the Central Criminal Court ( "the Old Bailey" ) in London. The court record had his surname as Fogerty. He was convicted of pickpocketi! ng and sentenced to transportation for life. Michael Fogarty arrived at Port Jackson by the "Minerva" on 16th December that year. The indent had his surname as Fogherty and his age as 25. It said he was a seaman from King`s County -- known to the Irish as Offaly. -- -- // -- -- -- I have examined a record of this man`s trial at the Old Bailey website which says the defendant claimed to have bought the property which was the subject of the charge "of a sailor at Blackwall". Blackwall was a London docks area. It seems reasonable to suppose that Michael Fogarty was a crewman of a ship berthed in London when arrested. -- -- // -- -- -- I have obtained copies of some records involving this man which are cited in the index to the Colonial Secretary`s papers -- -- // -- -- -- Michael Fogarty petitioned the Governor on various occasions seeking permission to marry. According to my reckoning, he lodged six applications during 1827-33 involving a total of four women and ! some of the applications were successful but none of the proposed marr iages eventuated. It seems there was a lapse in Michael Fogarty`s marriage applications from 1833 until 1845. He spent some time in prison during that period awaiting trial for murder. -- -- // -- -- -- In 1845, with the permission of the Governor, our man married Mary Anne Green, said to have come free to the Colony and apparently not one of those targeted in the 1827-33 petitions. The marriage was celebrated according to Church of England rites in the Parish of All Saints in the County of Camden. Michael Fogarty was conditionally pardoned in 1847. -- -- // -- -- -- I know nothing thereafter about Michael Fogarty. I know nothing about his wife after the 1845 marriage. I have not identified any descent from Michael Fogarty or Mary Anne Green. Regards to all, !
