Good afternoon listers, I'm sorry I wrote the wrong surname - it should be Cowan. This man, John Cowan, was associated with an Audrey Appleyard, and I think Audrey might have been a convict. Liz. W.
Good afternoon, Is anyone interested in Audry Appleyard who may have been a convict, and who married a John Gowan, a Marine Officer on the Sirius. I am sending this for a friend who has not yet had the pleasure of tracing convicts! Liz Walker, Lake Macquarie.
An apology to the list ... Now that I have downloaded the images of the Petition etc I have been able to zoom them and improve the contrast. Looking more closely at one of the images HO17/089/00200, it seems I misread the document when I first came across it. It seems the reference is not to Wm. Fowler and his son but Mrs Fowler and her son - it is only when you zoom the image that the latter reading is the better. In my defence, the superscription of rs after a rather flowery M was easy to mistake for a curlicued W followed by a superscribed m and the "her" was easy to mistake for a "his" - those of you who have tried to read C19th handwriting will, I'm sure, understand. I'm sorry if I have sent hares running after a Wm. Fowler of Bristol. Regards
Hi Laraine I'll onsend OFFLIST the five pages of his petition and the subsequent notes I found at HO17/89/QP/16, Do you want the clipping from the newspaper concerning his trial as well? Regards Ian Jordan

Daniel FOWLER The National Archives (England) have a petition lodged in respect of the conviction and sentence of Daniel FOWLER convicted in 1831 in Somerset for the offence of housebreaking for which he had been sentenced to death commuted to transportation for life: HO17/89/QP/16, Criminal Petitions, Series I. Hello Daniel (or anyone else), Has anyone found any documentation as to how such petitions were treated, please? The wife of my ancestor exiled to Sydney (wherever on Earth that was?), after the 1798 failed war of independence in Ireland, also wrote to the Lord High Protector of Ireland (and head of all His Majesty's forces in Ireland) that her husband really loved the Government/King of England and hence it was all a mistake to be shipping him off from Ireland to the other side of the world. She prayed that he instead be returned to his "small" family (she and six children I think) - especially as she was "bedral". Bedral is an old Scottish (Scots-Irish) word I think, meaning confined to one's bed (due to illness?). I doubt that Lord Castlereagh, the nobleman to whom it was addressed, would ever have read her petition to set her husband free (?). I have a copy but I also cannot find where the original now resides. (I suspect that all such petitions at that time were stored at Dublin Castle - but probably later moved from there ?). I have not yet read how any of these petitions of appeal from relatives were treated or assessed - or indeed if any effort at all was routinely made to assess the claims that might be made in some of them .. of the genre of 'my relative is innocent' etc. Whether my ancestor was innocent or otherwise of harbouring ideas injurious to Britain's majesty and power, and ownership of Ireland (by conquest centuries before), I still have no idea. He was almost certainly a Protestant, like the English themselves - yet Protestants (Presbyterians) in Ireland were central to the uprising of 1798 whence that alone means but little I think. The name was Burns, or Byrnes -- and seeing they themselves who bore the name could not write or spell it made little difference to them which it was(?). Best Regards, John Byrnes ( we are still in Sydney - having never returned to the old country) ----- Original Message ----- From: aus-pt-jackson-convicts@rootsweb.com To: Cc: Sent:Tue, 19 Nov 2013 12:04:34 +1100 Subject:Re: [PJ] Daniel Fowler Daniel FOWLER The National Archives (England) have a petition lodged in respect of the conviction and sentence of Daniel FOWLER convicted in 1831 in Somerset for the offence of housebreaking for which he had been sentenced to death commuted to transportation for life: HO17/89/QP/16, Criminal Petitions, Series I. Hi Laraine Trying to establish names of parents can be impossible for anyone in NSW who died before civil registration. Seeing that a lot of research has been done on Daniel, I suspect it is an impossible task, other than to speculate. Could you please tell us what you have done on trying to ID Daniel Flowler's parents. For example, have you obtained his death/burial certificate? If he is the Daniel who died in NSW in 1855, it means you wont get the names from his burial entry. Unless the names of his parents are recorded in family papers, eg, a bible, then its highly unlikely you will find the names of his parents recorded in Australia. Have you checked for an obituary in likely NSW newspapers? Turning to UK records, again it is not usual to find the names of parents of convicts in convict records held in the UK. But you need to check the trial records in detail, eg, to see if his parents lodged a plea in trying to help their son. It can happen but very few. Re place of birth, what records indicate Bristol? Sometimes a headstone can reveal place of birth, also an obituary. You may have already seen this, but in case you have not click on link below. http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/Bristol_and_Somerset/2009-01/1232317933 I see you raised this issue back in June. cheers Grahame

I have all the information on his trial and crime we know he worked for Garling the artist as a boatman, in Sydney, we know he married Bridget Welsh in Sydney they were married at St Mary’s by banns. One of the Children of the union was George Fowler born 1846. He was my Great Grandfather, the family story went that George was a Dean of a University but fell on hard time due to the evil brew. George became a journalist and wrote for papers like the Goulburn times. At one stage he turns up in Cooktown as the editor of a paper and it appear he co wrote the Emu and Kangaroo almost an anthem. George stated on his marriage cert that his mother was Mary Parnell, this is incorrect, but the Parnell's were connected in the Welsh line It could be that they educated George who was obviously better educated than the average man of the times. I wish to know more about the early years of George Fowler before he married Esther Wood . Then there is Daniel his father I have paid three researchers to find out who Daniels Fowlers parents were as he was well educated and came from Bristol but at the time of his arrest he claimed to live in Staffordshire no place can we find the name of his parents. Probably not at all connected but there is a heavy concentration of Walsh families in Kilkenny, Ireland. Marrying at St. Marys and with Bridget as a name very likely to be Irish. I would like some one to trace this family backwards from N.S.W some one who can really sink their teeth into it please. Laraine you could try the Fowler One Name Study Mr Robert Fowler 109 Gilbert House, Barbican, London EC2Y 8BD UNITED KINGDOM E-mail: fowler@one-name.org -----Original Message----- From: Patricia Sent: Monday, November 18, 2013 8:19 AM To: Laraine Dillon ; aus-pt-jackson-convicts@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PJ] researcher Before trying for a professional researcher you should go through the archives of the Rootsweb lists for the various places you can prove your ancestor lived. There are lists for the Bristol area and there is sure to be a Fowler one name society. You may have to try not only Rootsweb but also Yahoo, Facebook and anywhere else you can think of that may have a genealogy list. Members of genealogy lists are usually very helpful and can direct you to where the information you need is located, or if you are lucky one of the members will find it for you and pass it on, or perhaps a family member belongs to the list and will share research with you provided you also share. There is a lot of information online that was not available a year ago. However, you do have a lot of clues to enable to you find the information you seek without hiring a professional researcher Why don't you contact the Goulburn Library in NSW about his time as a reporter for the newspaper? The Goulburn Family History Society and the Library have a comprehensive Index to items listed in the local newspapers. It is many years since I contacted the GFHS, snail mail, and they are now probably online, they provided me with a lot of information, for a very small outlay, on my ancestors in the area. There are a lot of descendants with the Parnell surname in the Sydney area, some in my family line. No trace of a Mary Parnell marrying a Fowler unfortunately. Good luck. Patricia Hello and thank you to everyone who has replied to my email re an investigative researcher. I am open to all suggestions. Here is my problem Daniel Fowler on the Isabella 4 1832.... I have all the information on his trial and crime we know he worked for Garling the artist as a boatman, in Sydney, we know he married Bridget Welsh in Sydney they were married at St Mary’s by banns.
