    3. Colin Kennedy, Lesley Uebel's husband, has asked me to pass on the sad news that Lesley was diagnosed in mid-October with an untreatable, incurable and terminal brain tumour and is now in the final stages of succumbing to its effects. For some time Lesley has been unable to read, write or use her computer and she ultimately decided to shut down her site and give up the lists. Colin is working to ensure that all the Claim a Convict data finds a permanent home and will ensure that the listers are informed of this location when it is finalised. Lesley sends her thanks and gratitude to all those with whom she has worked over the past 15 years or so and leaves the world of convict ancestry with a heavy heart but a real sense of achievement. She sends her love to all. Regards, Coralie cdhird@optusnet.com.au

    2. For the Kennedy family. Lesley encapsulated what we all know to be a truly helpful person. Words cannot express how each and every one of us feel. She was what we all strive to be – helpful to others. Personally I would never have found my Hugh Crabtree was it not for Lesley and her knowledge. Thank you Lesley for all you have done; not just for me, but for everyone who had the pleasure of your knowledge and good grace. 3. It is not only in Australia that Lesley has helped people. I would like to let people know that Lesley has helped me make a connection with my family history. My ancestor John Keough Parmelia 2 was given a voice deprived of him in 1833 through the work of Lesley and through her kind assistance given through this site. without this site I would have never learned about the voyage he shared with Denis Hogan and of his descendent Elizabeth Walker. My thoughts are with Lesley and my much distant kinsman Colin Kennedy at this time. Lesley's work cannot be undone and should a donation be need to keep claim a convict alive in her honour I would for one be glad to help! 3. What sad news both for Lesley & her family & for the Australian genealogical community. I second Jan & Sandra's thoughts. Lesley's research is an absolute testament to her. I am grateful that she shared her research on the Claim a Convict site, the PJ rootschat & her publications. I consider her an expert in convict research. I sincerely hope that her Claim a Convict data can find a permanent home. I think she has created an invaluable resource, both for finding information & for contacting other people with an interest in or information about a convict. I'm fairly new to genealogy research, but would be more than happy to help out in any way whatsoever to ensure that her research & the Claim a Convict site live on. I wish Lesley, her husband peace, dignity & strength. My thoughts are with them & their family. Sherie from Sydney

    3. Good afternoon Sandra, I too have Tipperary ancestors, and I can't get any info on them. During the political uprisings in Ireland in the past 80 or so years, a lot of the old Tipperary records which had survived until then, were destroyed, and a lot of us have ground to a research halt. My Irish convict ancestor, Denis Hogan b. ca 1811 was from somewhere in Tipperary, and that is as far as I have been able to go back, despite the help of two other people related to Denis, one of whom lived in Tipperary. I don't even know who Denis' parents were, but they could have been Michael Hogan and Ellen Dunne, but those names don't crop up in later naming of children. Once Denis arrived here in the early 1830s I know not much more on him, considering the few early records that have survived since that time. If my late father knew anything about Denis, he certainly didn't let on, as it was a stigma to have convict ancestry back then. Once I worked on the next generation here in NSW, a lot more information had survived and was released for them. Sorry to not give you better information on early research. Liz.
