I am so sad to hear of this shocking news. I was more active in this group a few years ago, but the time needed to raise small children took me away from my research. At the start of my journey into family history, Lesley was very helpful and generous to this newbie in the genealogical world. I uncovered great stories of our convict and his family that were unknown to even elder Graingers today and we are all in contact with the Irish Graingers in Cork. I thank Lesley and wish her and her family peace. Marina Grainger (Sydney) (Convict: John Grainger/Granger - Mangles 2 - 1822)
Hi Several years ago when I first became interested in my family history, Lesley was one of the first people in the genealogy community to reach out and offer her help. Thanks to her I discovered numerous convicts, as well as picking up some good tips that I was able to use when researching my non convict ancestors. Thanks to Lesley's help early on, I soon became hooked and decided to take my interest in genealogy and Australian history one step further. Two years ago I returned to university to undertake a BA majoring in Australian History and Writing. I hope one day to undertake a PHD. Dear Lesley, the genealogy community will benefit from your generous spirit well into the future. Peace be with you and your family at this time. Regards, Dianne Myers
I couldn't agree more. Although I only met Lesley once at a wonderful gathering in Windsor about 10 years ago, I have been a staunch fan ever since. I do hope she & her family realise how many people she has inspired over the years. As one lister just said, I lurked too long. Thank you so much Lesley, you will be in my prayers, and you could not ever be forgotten. Lesley and family How very very sad, with Lesley having contributed so much to convict research. Thank you Lesley. Grahame
I am sad to hear about what has happened to Lesley's health. Please pass on my family's and my regards to Lesley & Colin and a huge thanks to Coralie for letting the group know what is happening. A number of listers have voiced a wish/hope that Lesley's work continues as a fitting tribute to her generosity of spirit and research skills. This may not be the time, but it may be the time. I do not know. What is required to keep the "Claim a Convict" site going? Money for hosting? Funding in general? A roster of enthusiasts who commit to a shift per month (or some such)? A single organiser? The continuation of which other sites would be a fitting gesture of appreciation? Thank you Lesley for all the help and advice you have given us over the many years of your list. Your wealth of knowledge which you so readily share with all has seen so many of us break down our brickwalls and continue our research. For this I personally thank you. To you and Colin I send my prayers, thoughts and good wishes for a peaceful time ahead with family and friends. kind regards, Donna Boyanton

Thank you Coralie, What sad news for Lesley and Colin. I have been a member of these lists for many years now although I have not made contribution lately due to my own indifferent health. I do watch the lists though and as Lesley and I share a birthday on 6th March I am always in contact with her then. Lesley took away any stigma that many of the listers felt at having been descended from convicts and for that I especially admire and thank her. I also thank her for the compassion that she gave when I lost my eldest daughter Lisa to cancer a few years ago. One of my fondest memories are the picnics that we all attended as a group. Coralie and Wayne were there as were many more of you. Thank you Lesley and may your journey be peaceful and painless. You will be missed so much. Love Shirley McLeod It is indeed sad for us all and especially Colin. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Coralie Hird" <cdhird@optusnet.com.au> To: <aus-pt-jackson-convicts@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, December 29, 2013 11:36 AM Subject: [PJ] LESLEY UEBEL > > Colin Kennedy, Lesley Uebel's husband, has asked me to pass on the sad > news > that Lesley was diagnosed in mid-October with an untreatable, incurable > and > terminal brain tumour and is now in the final stages of succumbing to its > effects. Hi Coralie If you can, would you please let her husband know that we all thank Lesley for all the hard work she has put into the PJ forum, claim a convict and the invaluable data she has collected and shared to assist people with their convict ancestors. It was thanks to Lesley that I found my CARR family in the 1828 census which Lesley pointed out was listed under KERR. Hi PJe'rs and hopefully LU, Coralie, thanks for that news, sad as it is. I was shocked to hear it. I have been with Lesley's list awhile, but not active lately. I am on exchange at Korea University, Seoul for 2013 and will return to Brisbane in February. Lesley was kind enough to write the forward for my book 'In the Wake of the Lord Melville', and I was about to contact her to let her know that it is now printed in Hong Kong and will be delivered in February. Coralie, are you able to pass on that news somehow? I'm sure she'll feel a little joy that I have finally done it. Otherwise perhaps you can contact me directly on this email: russtilaroo@gmail.com Thanks, and I hope to have more contact with PJ soon. Russell Kelly
