Laraine Dillon -----Original Message----- From: Michelle Nichols Sent: Sunday, December 29, 2013 11:22 PM To: AUS-PT-JACKSON-CONVICTS@rootsweb.com Subject: [PJ] Tribute to Lesley The news of Lesley's illness has been a shock to many of us on the Port Jackson and Hawkesbury mailing lists. We are all aware of Lesley's dedication to family history and the help she has generously given to many. At her special request, I have taken over as Administrator of both of these lists. As a tribute to Lesley Uebel, let us continue our family history research and keep both of these lists active. In regards to Lesley's website, "Claim a Convict" which is no longer accessible online, there have been discussions with her friend Coralie and her husband Colin, re future plans. Work is happening behind the scenes to ensure her work is not lost. We will keep you posted. 3. Such devastating news, so sad, so unfair. Thank you Coralie for letting us know. If I could say anything to Lesley and Colin at this time it would be a heartfelt thank you, well done, and Godspeed. We've had our ups and downs, thankfully more ups, but it needs to be said that Lesley has been a shining beacon for convict research for me and so many others, and genealogy will be very much the poorer for losing her treasurehouse of convict and historical knowledge and research expertise. I am so grateful that I found the PJ list all those years ago and with Lesley's help, a heap of convict ancestors. It's been such an enjoyable & interesting journey with Lesley providing help, suggestions and background along the way. There has been never a dull moment on the PJ list, and I love that we're always learning. Lesley will be so sorely missed and as others have said, I hope her website will be able to continue. She put an extraordinary amount of time and work into Claim A Convict, and her indexing work, and it has helped so many people. May Claim A Convict long remain as a tribute to Lesley and her achievements. 3. It was many many years ago that Lesley first helped me unlock some of my convict past. We met at the Hawkesbury Reunion several years later and since then she had been a fountain of knowledge both on the PJ and Hawkesbury lists. As my own husband lies in Intensive Care, I understand the anguish and heartache that Colin and her family are going through at this time, I wish them the very best as Lesley prepares to fight her most difficult battle. She has been the inspiration to so many and given such encouragement to those looking for their convict past. "Carpe diem" Sincerely Julie Webb Gold Coast

    3. I have just seen the sad news about Lesley. She was an inspiration when I was new to researching my convict ancestors - and still is. Thank you, Lesley, for all you've done for us. My thoughts are with you and Colin. And thank you to Coralie for letting us know. May Lesley's site continue as a source of inspiration and a memorial to her for many, many years. I can't remember who suggested that listers could help with this, but that's a wonderful idea. Frances in London -- Site: http://rebelhand.weebly.com/ Blog: http://rebelhand.wordpress.com/

    3. Would you thank her and let her know she will always be remembered by those of us who interacted with her online, through her wealth of knowledge and active assistance, but most of all her enduring and endearing interest in all things Convict and her willingness to share. The grief of her husband and family and friends in the face of such a potential loss must be hard to endure, and I am truly saddened that such an Icon in the promotion of Australia's history will be passing from our lives. 3. Hi everyone, Apologies to the list. Just finished 4 night shifts and skimming through my emails. Should know better. ;) Needless to say, I'm still shocked at Lesley's condition. :( Wayne, gosh you have a good memory. Yes I think we met up at Cherrybrook one time and another, tramping through St John's Cemetery at Parramatta. Our eldest is now 15yrs old and the others 12, 10 & 8. ;) I've now clocked up 11 yrs at RNSH. lol Kind regards, Sherrie. 3. My sincere thanks to Lesley for the many years of service to the genealogical community. As a member since the early days I have not been searching convicts for years but still enjoyed being on the list. Her compilations such as The Ladies of the John Renwick, not only solved a major problem for me but also allowed me to assist others. Her contribution is beyond measurement. Joan
