    3. I pursued a family story about an inheritance and discovered it was true. Discovered my grandfather had been in a home for recalitrant boys and that my grandmother had had a baby which died that no-one knew about. Found one of the families I was researching was the wrong one! By diligent digging discovered the true facts about another family line where the wrong "facts" had always been taken for granted. Communicated with many, many wonderful people all over the world. In January 2013 started a data-base of contacts so that I can keep track of them and renew contact at regular intervals. 3. I am so sad to learn of Lesley’s illness. She has helped me so much since I joined her mailing list and I benefited so much from her knowledge and answers to my questions over the years. l also learnt a lot from the answers she gave to others on the list. She gave much of herself and was so knowledgeable on early Australian history and our convicts. Lesley was always professional and gave us much to think about. My thoughts and prayers are with her and her family at this time. With all that is happening in their lives both Lesley and her husband, Colin, have put their troubles aside to think about what would happen to this mailing list. I am so pleased Michelle that they have asked you to administer the list and you have taken on this task. I have also been an avid reader of your input into family history and the Hawkesbury Newsletter and I know you will carry on the great work that Lesley started with this list, that has been running for so long, and you will do it well. Thank you. Valerie Williams Mollymook

    3. Dear Lesley, I and so many others can only repeat what has been said so far. You have stimulated the mailing lists in your care with so much positive discussion that their archives are a treasure trove for the newbies to discover in future and old hands to reference. The odd heated string of posts you moderated fairly and firmly when needed. You helped me so much with my own research. 3. I discovered my presumed cad of a direct ancestor who had abandoned his wife and 6 living children as paupers, was actually transported for stealing wheat. He was granted TOL and went on to become a selector at Collector and 'marry' a fellow convict. His haystack was a victim of arson and he later died after a cart accident, delivering his wheat. All thanks to this site and Lesley in particular. Sandra

    1. [PJ] Remarkable achievement
    2. Jordan
    3. May I add my gentle thoughts to those already expressed on these list for Lesley and Colin. A search of Rootsweb shows over 11,000 posts from Lesley's email address to various lists stretching back 14 years. There are probably even more on old message boards that I have long forgotten about. The "Claim a Convict" website, begun in August 1998, was updated regularly. It not only helped put convict researchers into contact with others researching a particular convict but had helpful pages: FAQs, explanations of "Indents" and other convict research terms, codes and abbreviations, lists of convict ships and early Governors of NSW, and links. As David Hooper said in the "Townsville Bulletin" of 23 April 2002 (p. 808): "Lesley Uebel's concept is as logical in presentation as it is broad in its scope. A remarkable achievement on-line index sharing, this site helps connect, via a live e-mail link, anyone who is researching a specific convict who entered New South Wales, Australia, via the reception centre at Port Jackson, between (so far) 1788 and 1813." A "remarkable achievement" indeed, and that was still early days. Then there are the publications including the CDs with the bountiful fruits of her research. Her internet work is pioneering. "Claim-a-convict" predated the State Library of Queensland's convict database by almost a decade: http://www.slq.qld.gov.au/resources/family-history/info-guides/convicts/about According to the "The Chronicle" (Toowoomba) of 11 July 2012 ("Having a convict in your family can provide you with a wealth of information..."), Lesley's site at about 124,000 records had a thousand more than the SLQ's site which was created by a taskforce of volunteers with the resources of a State Library behind it. I hope the seas are calm for your last journey. Ian Jordan Sydney
