Lesley happy new year to you and the PJ list .. :) I joined the list to help a friend find THREE convicts .. that he didn't know about .. I don't need to be on the list .. sadly .. I don't have any convicts in my family .. however, I have enjoyed your emails very much .. so I will stay on here for a bit longer and enjoy them even more in 2009 .. Best wishes to you .. regards Maree (ex Qlder .. now in Hobart)
Happy new year to all on the list and especially to you Lesley. Still tracing my convict ancestors--James Dunn, Catherine Barry, Michael Napthali, William Glanville, James Johnson, Rosanne Downey, Thomas Willsmore, Mary Roberts and possibly more. Gwen
I will try sending this again - this is the second email tonight that Rootsweb have rejected my messages :( Thank you for your comments Arnie As for the current cricket situation I cannot help..... to me it is like watching paint dry. As they say... may the best man (or team) win! An interesting cricket item from 204 years ago The Sydney Gazette 8 January 1804 The late intense weather has been very favourable to the amateurs of cricket, who have scarcely lost a day for the last month. The frequent immoderate heats might have been considered inimical to the amusement, but were productive of very opposite consequences, as the state of the atmosphere might always regulate the portion of exercise necessary to the ends this laborious diversion was originally intended to answer. Hi everyone, The end of another very interesting year on the Port Jackson Convicts Mailing List. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members who contributed in any way. By contributing, I mean those who asked questions, answered questions, made others aware of interesting books or web sites, or just sent a reminder to everyone about the convicts in their family. Without you the PJ Convicts List would not exist or be quite as successful as it has been over the years. It IS one of the better lists available although restricted to a small period of time in Australia's history. Over the past year we have been able to help solve many a problem for others and although we may not hear back from a few, I am certain that they have been pleased with the information received. I hope that this list continues on as it has for the past 8 years - full of information about times past, helping people solve problems about their convicts and a bit of fun along the way. I hope that next year is just as exciting and interesting, Please don't hesitate to send a message every so often with the names and transports of those convicts from whom you descend. I would like to wish you and your families, found and unfound, all the very best for the new year, 2009. A reminder that the NSW BDMs should add an extra year so that should keep most of us busy for a little while! >From Robbie Burns most famous folk song Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And auld lang syne? HAPPY NEW YEAR Best regards Lesley Uebel mailto:ckennedy@bigpond.net.au CLAIM A CONVICT http://users.bigpond.net.au/convicts/index.html

Rick I found a surveyors chain for sale on ebay once (but didn't buy it) - I think from memory it was 22 yards long. Isn't that the length of a cricket pitch? The fascinating thing was that it consisted of 100 links, thus linking (sorry connecting) to the land measure. Sorry for keeping on the "off topic" but I had to put in my "two bob's worth". The section called Search takes you to where you can look up the Land & Property computer database, or place an online order for various types of documents. The Deed search by name finds Powers of Attorney and other types of registered agreements. It's become difficult this last year to do some types of property searches at the Macquarie St Lands office because they have been taking large batches of folios off the shelves for digitising. This web site is one of the results. Old System titles have not been digitised but you can order a copy via the Search section. Most of their paid copies are around $10, the same cost they charge for photcopies at Macquarie St.. Christine You shoudl be able to get information of change of ownership from Land titles office by requesting an historical search of the particular land in which you are interested. Many of the deeds and documents relating to land in NSW when it was under the "Old System" title are now permanently lodged with Land titles office (now known as Department of Lands). There is a fee for the search. G'Day all, Happy hunting for the new year to all. I just thought I would post a link to the Dept of lands website http://parishmaps.lands.nsw.gov.au/pmap.html which has historical maps online and included on the map is the property owner. Hi Lesley, Thank you for your suggestions. Our library has no information what so ever with regards to genealogy. And where to start? Do you know if there is a starter pack or a list of suggestions of books/cd's to get them started? They have no microfiche readers either. I believe they are not a huge size, though the ones with a printer would not fit in the library. (It's about as big as my lounge room and family room combined) I think they also have limitations of the numbers of books according to population, but I can check it out. I realise that you are living in a very isolated place and that is the reason why I provided you with the info about Edward as I had transcribed it some time ago...... but I do not have at home either of the above two Indices. There was a time when I would pop up to my library many times a week to check these for listers but my time is no longer my own and I can no longer do that. Have you thought to approach the Halls Creek Library and ask if they would purchase various books, microfiche/microfilm or CDs about convicts ?
