    3. Lesley I only received this email today despite it being sent on the 28/12/08. I have made contact with my distant relative Jill who is on the Claim the Convict site. The ship is incorrect I noted. I have a lot of information to share - I know his wife and child in England and was very excited to get the BC late last year of his son born prior to him being shipped to Australia. I also know JOHN HAWKES parents in England. I am not sure how about putting all this information somewhere for others to find in the future. Your help will be most appreciated. I am trying to find out what happened to John after 1860's at Gundaroo. Also very interested to find out what happened since 1844 and prior to his marriage to MARY ANN DAVIS. It appears who was assigned to Mr George Potter at Gundaroo or in the Yass area. Strange that he left there to marry in Seymour and then return back to Gundaroo some years later. I am hoping this could have been because of MARY ANN DAVIS'S family perhaps living at Gundaroo. Unfortunately DAVIS is like having a SMITH in the family and tracing is not easy. Thanks for all your advice and assistance. You have helped me so many times over the years. 3. Thank you Lesley. An interesting document regarding an early segment of life in Port Jackson. Regards, Jill -----Original Message----- From: aus-pt-jackson-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-pt-jackson- I found this in The Sydney Morning Herald of December 24 1955. Most of us would have been quite young when this was written and some of you have not have been born! When Sydney was 11 months old .. As we celebrate this, our one hundred and sixty seventh Christmas and possibly the most prosperous in all our history, we might remember that the first Christmas of our pioneering forefathers was somewhat different. By December 25, 1788, Sydney town, Australia's first settlement was 11 months old. Up till then progress had been steady, if not rapid. The bush around Sydney Cove had been cleared, and the thoroughfare that is now George Street North was a fairly well-defined track.

It never ceases to amaze me the amount of knowledge about if we but to ask the right questions in the right place!! Having said that, I am still looking for info about JANE lANGLEY (although I have found some (info) since my last posting) and her husband THOMAS CHIPP. He was tried in Dublin in 1831 and not Meath although Meath is noted as his native place. If you check the NSW State Records web site you will note that he did not receive his Certificate of Freedom until 1841 - a few years after due. He didn't receive a Ticket of Leave whilst serving his original sentence although he did receive one in 1859!! and that being the case may have committed a crime after 1841 when he was free. Now, on checking the State Records of NSW further - in particular the Index to Deposition Registers Index it appears as though he, his wife and son may have committed a few colonial crimes such as assault, larceny and arson whilst living in or near Queanbeyan in the 1870's..... unless there was another family with the same names. John Francis Lawless per "Bussorah Merchant" married Sophia Thompson in 1848. Sophia's father is "William Thompson" also a convict, he married Sophia Chipp. Unfortunately this is all the info I have on him. Sophia Chipp's father was "Thomas Chipp" a First Fleet Marine and her grandmother was "Jane Langley" per Lady Penrhyn in the First Fleet. 3. Hi Elizabeth, many thanks for replying, the way I received the information from a family historian was:- 'Margaret didn't die, she some time later married 'THE Mayor of Tenterfield' and they went on to have several more children'. I have written to the Tenterfield Council asking if they can give me a list of their Mayors between 1894 and 1900 and I will look for a marriage in both NSW and QLD BDMs. Unfortunately if she did choose to revert to her maiden name 'Margaret Jones that name is so common it makes the job of identifying her with any certainty almost impossible as the are so many of them. I also have a William Smith on an unrelated branch who is also a brick wall for the same reason. 1. [PJ] New member`s enquiry about Fogarty links
    2. Andrew Fogarty
    3. Hello Lesley and listers, I am seeking to hear from anyone able to add to the particulars I have concerning the antecedents of a convict named Michael Fogarty who came to Sydney from Ireland in 1822 by the ship "Mangles". I am not descended from him. I have researched a lot of Australian Fogarty families. I have long wondered whether Michael`s family can be linked with any other in my collection. Australian records state that Michael Fogarty was from County Kilkenny and that his parents were John and Catherine. I know about Michael`s wife and have a lot of material on descendants. Australian records give me the impression that Michael probably had a sister named Mary who married a Ricbard Hennessy who also was transported to Sydney on the "Mangles" in 1822. Richard Hennessy appears to have been from Clonmel in County Tipperary. I have investigated the descent from Richard`s daughter Mary, who came to Sydney in 1830 as a convict on the ship "Asia" with a convict named Catherine Fogarty. The indents referred to those two as sisters. I have investigated the descent from Catherine. Michael Fogarty settled at Maitland. Eventually there were descendants in Queensland and the Northern Territory. Regards, Andrew Fogarty Casino N.S.W.

    3. Liz and Listers Thanks for your response. I don't have any known Marsh relatives in Australia. My Marsh relatives were in Essex and are connected with my convict John Hawkes from the other side. My Marsh line married a Holgate who in turn married a Mott. The Mott and Hawkes line joined together with John Hawkes and Mary Ann Davis's eldest daughter married Frederick Mott from Essex in 1869 in Young NSW. Interesting you mention Ben Hall the Bushranger. Another of my convicts (married a Mott) John Jobson held up Grogan Station whilst Frederick Mott was working there. John Jobson was his son in law. Sounds very interesting. I have wondered whether John Hawkes got involved in some robberies etc. I found some articles in the Parramatta Chronicle - a John Hawkes appearing at Berrima court in 1844. My other convicts are Thornborough and Salter. If anyone has anything that matches to any of the above it would be most appreciated. 3. Hi Karen There are 18 people listed under Lawless in the 4 volumes book Queanbeyan Pioneer Cemeteries, none appear to be the two below but in view of Lesley's reference to Queanbeyan below, there could be a connection. Do you know the names of any Lawless children? Perhaps contact me off list as its getting away from PJ Convict matters. cheers Grahame On 03/01/2009, at 10:54 AM, Lesley Uebel wrote: > Hi Karen > > He actually arrived as Patrick Lawless...... and on checking the > Indent is > states in small writing 'or John'. > > He was tried in Dublin in 1831 and not Meath although Meath is > noted as his > native place. > > > If you check the NSW State Records web site you will note that he > did not > receive his Certificate of Freedom until 1841 - a few years after due. > > He didn't receive a Ticket of Leave whilst serving his original > sentence > although he did receive one in 1859!! and that being the case may > have committed > a crime after 1841 when he was free. > > > Now, on checking the State Records of NSW further - in particular > the Index to > Deposition Registers Index it appears as though he, his wife and > son may have > committed a few colonial crimes such as assault, larceny and arson > whilst > living in or near Queanbeyan in the 1870's..... unless there was > another family > with the same names. > > > Regards > > Lesley Uebel > mailto:ckennedy@bigpond.net.au > CLAIM A CONVICT > http://users.bigpond.net.au/convicts/index.html > > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: aus-pt-jackson-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com > [mailto:aus-pt-jackson-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of > Karen > Sent: Saturday, January 03, 2009 5:23 AM > To: aus-pt-jackson-convicts@rootsweb.com > Subject: [PJ] CORRECTION: Should be "John FRANCIS Lawless" not John > Patrick > > > Hi again Listers > > > Yesterday I asked for info about John Patrick Lawless..when it > should be > "JOHN FRANCIS LAWLESS", my apologies I was getting him confused > with another > relation. > > > John Francis Lawless per "Bussorah Merchant" married Sophia > Thompson in > 1848. > > > Sophia's father is "William Thompson" also a convict, he married > Sophia > Chipp. Unfortunately this is all the info I have on him. > > > Sophia Chipp's father was "Thomas Chipp" a First Fleet Marine and her > grandmother was "Jane Langley" per Lady Penrhyn in the First Fleet. > > > Any information about any of the above-mentioned would be greatly > appreciated. > > > Kind Regards & Happy New Year to All > > Karen > > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to AUS-PT- > JACKSON-CONVICTS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' > without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    1. [PJ] Charles Fredrick Gilbert arrived EARL GREY 2
    2. Dot Sweeney
    3. Hello Listers, I am making some progress with my search for my G G Grandfathers roots. I am waiting for a trial transcript from the Kent Archives service but they are having some processing problems it seems. Charles Fredrick Gilbert, tried at the Kent Assizes on 12th March 1838 for burglary (simple), sentenced to transportation for life. Born circa 1816 somewhere in Kent, occupation Groom, able to read and write. Charles arrived Port Jackson aboard the Earl Grey (2) on 21/11/1838, Australian records say Fredrick Charles Gilbert, crime housebreaking. The first ticket of leave I have found is 4th July 1846 and states 'allowed to remain in the employ of Mr John Lord Ellerby at Richmond River', I believe this may have been on a large sheep property? The second one I have found is dated 12th November 1848 and states ' same as preceding'. I have not found any further TOL`s or any pardon etc but he was in Sydney by the birth of his fifth child in 1857. Charles married Charlotte Gilbert, born 1832 Grantham Lincolnshire, arrived free with parents on the Briton in 1844, they married on 29th August 1847 at Clarence River and had nine children, first four born at Clarence and Richmond River, next five at Chippendale/Redfern Sydney. I am wondering if maybe Charles received a pardon? I am descended from his daughter Charlotte Gilbert who married James Robert Meyers and their daughter Barbara who married William Austin Chater. If anyone on the list has any information on Charles or his background or descendants I would love to hear from you. Many thanks Dorothy

Am I right in assuming that "postal' references would simply refer to a listing that there is a letter waiting for....? 3. Hello Pat, I can't help you with any of the names you mention, except, possibly the Marsh name. I haven't got all the details to hand at the moment, but I remember Christiana Wilcox (a convict) married into a Marsh Family - all my records are put away, but I'm sure she married George Marsh, and some of the Marsh children eventually ended up in Blayney, into which branch my paternal gt.aunt Emily Newstead married, and my father and his sisters grew up with all the Marsh cousins. I know I grew up hearing family stories about how someone got held up by Bell Hall. If this family is of interest please let me know, and I can probably help a bit more. Liz Lake Macquarie. 3. Hi Helen >From the 1828 NSW Census it appears as though the other siblings were Richard and Charles Lord both 12 years of age in 1828. There is a marriage of an Elizabeth Lord to Thomas Sewell in 1835 V18351399 19/1835 SEWELL THOMAS LORD ELIZABETH CV and she may have died in 1872 - age given 54 - therefore born about 1818. Elizabeth Lord in the 1828 NSW Census was stated to be 10 years of age at that stage. I cannot help with Esther or Hester Lord..... but I am sure that there are a few other people on this list researching the Lord name regards Lesley Uebel mailto:ckennedy@bigpond.net.au CLAIM A CONVICT http://users.bigpond.net.au/convicts/index.html -----Original Message----- From: aus-pt-jackson-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-pt-jackson-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Helen Thompson Sent: Saturday, January 03, 2009 4:55 PM To: aus-pt-jackson-convicts@rootsweb.com Subject: [PJ] Convicts Edward Jones and Ann Lord Hi Lesley and everyone else I have a question about the children of convicts Edward Jones (Tellicherry) and Ann Lord (Broxbornebury). Re the 2003 listing below they had three children (I tried emailing Pam direct but this is no longer a current email address). They don't appear to have married until 1821 (V18211058 147B/1821 JONES EDWARD LORD ANN). One of the children Edward Jones fathered with Ann Lord was an Elizabeth Lord b. 3 January 1819, christened 13 February 1819, C of E Chronological Indexes, Parish of St John, Paramatta (V18195038 1B/1819 NSW BDM Index). I am trying to track down details for my ancester Esther Lord who was born in the colony of NSW around 1819-1820 (parents unknown), and married Joseph Sibrey/Sibraa (both of North Richmond) on 20 April 1837 in Pitt Town, NSW, and I am having no luck finding any records for her anywhere under that name. I was just wondering if anyone knows what became of the child Elizabeth Lord - who she married, etc., and what the names of the other two children were? Kind regards Helen

I will only add another convict name transported on board same. May I also recommend Lesley Uebel's previously presented material HRA Secretary A. Marsden to Governor King 22 Feb, 1806 My convict was Edward Jones sentenced as an Irish Rebel in Londonderry. He married Ann Lord from the Broxbornebury but except for fathering three children, he is then something of a 'lost soul'. My information about Edward came from Elizabeth Hook's great book Journey to a New Life: The Story of the ships Emu in 1812 and Broxbornbeury in 1814 What I have not been able to fathom - were Irish Rebels in the north of Ireland in 1800? Would he have just been caught there? Most material I have read related to the "Tellicherry Five" Has anyone searched for an "Edward Jones" there are so many. It is possible he is 'still alive' as he seems not to appear on death registers! His wife remarried in 1832. Elizabeth Hook states he was deceased in 1828 - anyone any success in their research? Puzzled Pam
