John Chew per Vittoria stated that his native place was Gloucestershire and that is only a few very miles from Bath where the other one may have come from.. Hi Matt, I am interested in any Allen / Allan families associated with early Australian Colonial times, as I have a brick wall with my Allen family ancestors which I am trying to knock down. The 1828 Census shows Jane as a widow, and as she married John Allen, she should only have been shown as such if John had died. The youngest Allen child is shown as 8 months old, so John would have logically died in late 1826, 1827 or 1828. Jane has the Allen children living with her in the 1828 census. I am wondering whether John had any children by a previous marriage, as Jane did. I am trying to determine the father of three Allen boys who were born in the colony, and who were referred to as youths in 1834 in an article in the Sydney Gazette. They (apparently) do not appear in the 1828 census in the list of Allens. Their names were Henry, Joseph and Benjamin. Hi Joan, Alexander McCabe and Elizabeth Celey were the earliest convicts in my family I could think of that might be in your book timeframe. However there are heaps of convicts and free settlers including Davis, Golding, Hanslow, Oakley, Camden, Fisher, Walsh etc that would be recorded at the Land Titles Office I suppose. Would be worth a trip one day- but I still haven't even managed to get to the NSW Archives yet. Thanks for your advice and for checking the book, Kind regards, Susan, in NSW. Hi Di, Some weeks ago you wrote " quote: I have been researching the family of John Bradshaw from the Whitelands townland of southern Tipperary with a daughter named Catherine who came to NSW in 1849 with the rest of family using a free passage. During this searching I came across another Catherine Bradshaw listed online @Ancestry.com in the Australian Convict Index (Reakes) age 25 year 1839 Birth Place: Tipperary county State:NSW Status:M.1m Ship: Minerva 6 Occupation: Dairymaid. She may be your Catherine? unquote. Interesting that all the details fit apart from her being married with one son. On the indents she is listed as single with no children, so I'm wondering how difficult it may be to get a print out of that information from the Ancestry records and email on to me please? Will you email me privately so we can carry on this conversation please? jhinton at westnet dot com dot au Cheers and thanks Janine.

Hello Susan, Unfortunately not. The only "Alexander" amongst the various versions of "Mc's" was an Alexander McDonald. In fact, Alexander McDonald was the only Alexander in all of the "M's". Don't forget that my book only goes until 1809 and that there are some missing grants. If you are in Sydney, you might be able to find out more info. (for after 1809) from the Land Titles Office (St James station end of Macquarie Street). You need to go to the basement of the "newer" building (behind the old Barracks). It's a bit of a rabbit warren down there, but you can ask at the basement reception desk (near the lift) where to go. There are no lockers there, so take the minimal of personal belongings with you. Photocopying is a bit expensive - you need to buy photocopying tickets but the good thing is that it is one photocopy ticket per item photocopied ie - a 6 page item = 1 photocopy ticket; a 1-page item = 1 photocopy ticket. I've found the staff extremely helpful there. You are allowed to use the staff canteen (on the top floor) for lunch/tea breaks - prices quite good. Oh and the nearest toilets to the basement section are back near the lift. Good luck.
