    1. Re: [PJ] "Brothers " Ship to Aust.
    2. Lesley Uebel
    3. Oh yes, I remember now. Isabella Allison did arrive on the Brothers in 1827. The Indent does state that she had one child on board with her..... it does not state the sex of that child. Isabella was tried in Omagh on 27 March 1825 and the Brothers arrived in PJ on 2 February 1827...... nearly 2 years after she was tried. I don't know if she had this child before she was tried or during the next 2 years. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, the NSW BDMs have: V182871 12/1828 ELLISON SARAH JOHN ISABELLA and that tallies (somewhat) with the Sarah Allison living with her mother Isabella Allison (Brothers) at the Female Factory in December 1828. Sarah is listed as being 4 months old. The age could be wrong - perhaps it should read 4 years old although I don't think this is correct because Sarah as a 4 year old would probably not be living in Female Factory with her mother. Perhaps her first child died and Sarah was conceived in PJ, The Sarah I mentioned baptised in 1819 was the daughter of John and Sarah Ellison. 2. Stan Elgood
    3. Hi Lesley and listers, For those interested in the Donoghue family I have a book which mentions a James and John Donoghue (sons of Lawrence and Catherine Dwyer) of Stratford, Co. Wicklow, Ireland who came to Australia in the 1850's (settling outside Queanbeyan NSW) This family is mentioned in two books I have. If anyone is interested in a transcription of this info, please contact me off list. Lyn

    3. Hi all I lurk and enjoy the postings (and owe Lesley many thankyou's for the great background and 'how to' postings that she adds to the general mix) Just to add to the current discussion, two things: 1/ Don't give up and 2/ put your brick wall out on the lists - NAME the man or woman. (plus a bit of detail) My husband's immigrant came free in a cabin as an unreccognisable Mr Turner - no initial- on a ship in 1939. Married before statutory registration. Son as informant on his death cert had provided the wrong set of grandparents christian names. (not intentionally- a genuine mistake in the sadness of the moment) End of story?? George Turner from Devon may as well be Jim Smith from London! A very kind soul saw my mention of him on another list in the UK and put 2 and 2 together He had happened to have read a will by an unmarried woman who mentioned her nephew in Australia - bingo! Not only was my brick wall her nephew but my brick wall had cousins he had followed out that he was in business with in Maitland with all sorts of interesting stories to find (long story but off topic - further wills and agreements in Oz refer to items mentioned in previous wills in Devon) I'm not saying that a will will be found for a destitute Irish tenant farmer or English ag lab, but you never know what snippet of info someone may have that breaks down that wall. But if they don't know you are looking, how can they tell you what they know? Oh, and no 3/: SNIP your postings when replying. We (particularly me) all have acidentally left a great screed of digest on the end of a reply in excitement of that new possible lead, but remember not everyone has broadband or a cheap rate of activity on the internet and its really annoying re-reading pages of yesterday's posts to find the 2 line reply. Good Luck and Happy hunting, Glynis Turner PS Check the Subject line is relevant before sending - I nearly sent with a subject line of : Re: AUS-PT-JACKSON-CONVICTS Digest, Vol 4, Issue 38 Oops :) ----- Original Message ----- Re: [PJ] Untraceable relatives

    1. [PJ] Hugh Donoghue
    2. Rhonda Flowers
    3. Dear Lesley, Warren and Listers The PJ thread regarding Hugh Donohue/Donoghue really made me realise just how important it is to think about what was happening in the Colony at this time around 1840. Transportation to Port Jackson was coming to an end. The last convict transport (except for a smattering of 4 or 5 in 1849) to arrive in NSW was (I think) Eden I (2) arriving 18 Nov 1840. The Hugh Donoghue I found in the Archives of Tasmania embarked on the British Sovereign in Dec 1840 and arrived in VDL 1841. Would he have known his destination? Would he and his wife have known that the decision to cease transportation to NSW had been taken by the British government of the time. Perhaps when his wife petitioned free passage she thought Hugh was going to NSW. Hugh Donoghue per British Sovereign was married as indicated in the full text on the link below. http://search.archives.tas.gov.au/ImageViewer/image_viewer.htm?CON33-1-7,196,70,S,80ght Hugh and Bridget may have been caught up in a cruel twist of fate. Also on the same British Sovereign was a Christopher Moran. In the Tasmanian Archives in his digitised record from the Conduct Book of the British Sovereign Christopher is recorded as saying "I committed this offence to get out to my father" ...only problem was it appears that his father had been transported to NSW many years before not to VDL. So I don't think Christopher was expecting to land in VDL or maybe he may not have known about that stretch of water that separates the mainland from the island. Christopher's father appears to be Michael Moran per Fergusson 1828 (yet to be proven beyond doubt). Michael applied around 1836 to have his wife and four children brought to NSW at the expense of the government. This was approved but it wasn't until 1840 that his wife and daughter arrived on the Isabella and one son arrived on the King William. I have been searching for the other two children for at least two years but have not been able to find them arriving in NSW. I had claimed Michael Moran per Fergusson on Claim a Convict as I have full documentary proof that he is my GGG grandfather. Just before Christmas I was contacted from Tasmania via Claim a Convict regarding Christopher Moran per British Sovereign. What a valuable resource is "Claim a Convict"!. Thank you Lesley for maintaining it. This is the second connection I have had through Claim a Convict ...in fact it is how my family history research really began. So maybe Bridget and Hugh never did get back together. Hugh would have had to serve his sentence before going to NSW and Bridget would probably not have had the money or connections to get to VDL. Christopher likewise would have had to serve his 7 year sentence before going in search of his father in NSW ...did he find him? I wonder how long it will take me to find out if I ever do? Regards Rhonda

    3. Rhonda just to add my 2 cents worth, petitions on Irish convicts were made usually by their families, not only for married men, sometimes mothers for sons etc. & not all married men, some women didn't want them back. If you go to the Irish transportation database and find your convict listed you might also see a reference no. if there is a petition this will have the letters PPC & a number. These petitions & other documents referring to family reunions have been filmed & are available in the State Library Sydney, family history section, you have to be lucky. The best other source on irish convicts is in the Irish newspapers which sometimes gave detailed accounts of trials Robyn Hardie On Friday, January 30, 2009, at 04:02 PM, Rhonda Flowers wrote: > Hello Kitty > > I was interested in part of your recent email (excerpt below). 3. Dear List, One of my New Year resolutions is to be up-to-date with my e-mails. I am progressing but not quickly enough probably due to the horrible weather. My computer is in a room with no air conditioning which is at present registering 38 degrees. I am desperate to do some research but it is too hot (44 degrees outside) to even consider driving to the library. There appears to be no respite as the forecast is for well over 30 every day for another week. Roll on winter-at least it is easy to get warm. Cheers, Cherilyn in unbelievably hot Melbourne
