Thank you Gary and Lesley, The James Richards and the William Mansell you mention are no relation that I know of but the George Richards in George St. in 1821 would be my ggg grandfather. That no pub is listed with the name I supplied, does this mean that I have the wrong meaning of the occupation " house-keeper " ? There are a number of mentions in the Sydney Gazette refering to George operating a public house and in one article a grand jury were of the opinion that he was not a fit person and his license should be revoked, this was in 1824. Another mention, in 1825, has two men indicted for stealing a keg of spirits from the premises owned by Grace Richards wife of George. Was it possible in those days to run such an establishment but without a name over the door ? Thank you so much Rhonda and Lesley for the information re Daniel LEARY & Mary SULLIVAN. I have organised a bus trip to Kingswood for our FH group next month so will definitely be going along too! It is a great help to have the reel references, the indent info and 1837 General Returns and you have both given me a good head start in tracking down our Daniel and Mary. Many thanks Marilyn
At 01:38 PM 15/02/2009, you wrote: Arnie The CD that Lesley mentioned has James Richards with the White Horse in George St in the 1840s, moving to Newtown with the same pub name in 1848. George Richards in George St in 1821 has no name of pub. James Richards was a son of convict Phoebe Haines, Lord Melville 1817. There are no biog notes on the CD for George Richards. William Mansell had a pub (no name) in Pitt St then O'Connell St around 1810 to 1813. No-one of your two surnames had a pub named the Black Horse, on this CD. By 1851 there would have been a few thousand adults with children who returned to England - pardoned emancipist families, free settlers, children sent back for education, military families. Lesley's "Leaving the Colony" list has over 2,000 unique names between 1803 & 1811, some with multiple departures, and not all heading back to England. Some number would have been 'boomerangs' on a visit & return for trade or other reasons. But that's only an eight year time-frame, and 1851 covers another two generations. Where did you search for this? Gary _________________________________ Gary Luke ~ gary@feraltek.com.au Sydney, Australia
Hi Gary, I used the search engine at ancestry.com. I've looked a little harder given your comments about the number of departures... I assumed I might find children of convicts - the convicts themselves having obviously been born elsewhere. While there is overlap, and transcription errors, here are some of the hits Australia: 54 (as a parish town) and 258 (as a country) New South: 269 Sydney: 202 Sidney: 167 vdl: 1 van: 160 Couldn't find any hits for Norfolk Island though.... but perhaps not surprising given the prevalence of the work in England. Place names like Rose Hill, Parramatta, Brickfield, Botany, Jackson gave hits, but nowhere related to Australia. In terms of birth dates, most are 1830'2 and 1840's. I looked for any 1700's briths and found quite a few, mostly females their names may have changed through marriage etc.. Three examples: Enathan Rawlins, 67, born abt 1784 (!), Sydney Cove Mary Ann Dunbar, 54, born abt 1797, New South Wales Sidney, a widow and pauper William Kent, 51, born abt 1800, New S Wales, formerly Royal Navy Another point of interest are that there are quite a few in the US 1850 census with the birth place 'Sydney' or 'Australia' (just had a quick look) - and several easily tied back to NSW BDM records. If people think this is worth indexing let me know, as i've been looking for a project and this looks like a doozy. Likewise, has this already been performed? cheers matt Message: 2 > Date: Sun, 15 Feb 2009 12:20:05 +1100 > From: Gary Luke <gary@feraltek.com.au> > Subject: Re: [PJ] Former Convict Departures > To: aus-pt-jackson-convicts@rootsweb.com > Message-ID: <20090215012645.5E2A22BB994@hosted03.westnet.com.au> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed > > Matt > > >A brief search of the 1851 England census reveals that there are 270 > people > >who gave their palce of birth as Australia, and while there is some > overlap, > >220 or so stated Sydney as their place of birth. Dear Matt Two Bowman brothers, William and John, came to Australia from Scotland. John is the Richmond one. He had a son called William, as did William. My Bowman is William, son of William. William Junior married Elizabeth Hutchinson and hence my interest. There is heaps about the Richmond Bowmans online including the Bowman Flag. Have a look. Did the Victorian bushfires get much coverage? Hi Lesley and Marilyn "The 1837 General Returns of Convicts notes that he was assigned to Alexander Berry - Illawarra district." Yes this is the same Daniel Leary who is on Reel 1051 4/3686 page 76. On this list it does also give who each convict is assigned to but the writing is indistinct ...I could clearly see Illawarra but couldn't make out Alexander Berry but now knowing the name I can clearly see Alex Berry Esq. Checking Reel 699 would certainly confirm the relationship of this Daniel Leary and Mary Sullivan as husband and wife. Another suggestion is to check the "Irish Gift" Transportation Database reels at State Archives Kingswood. The Isabella 1840 was a female convict transport and when I looked at the Transportation Database reel I found that only my ggg grandmother and her daughter were aboard as free settlers whereas one of the other children a male was placed on board the King William a male convict ship leaving Dublin around the same time. Two other children remain unaccounted for. Good luck ...would be interested to know Marilyn if we have found the correct Daniel Leary. Rhonda
Hi Marilyn It appears as though Rhonda may have found that particular convict. He was the last one by that name to arrive in PJ - the others having been transported to VDL in the 1840's. The Indent for the Blenheim I (1) states that he was 32 years of age when he arrived, could read and write and was Roman Catholic. He was a married man with children, one male and one female. He gave his native place as Cork and his occupation was Waterman. Convicted at Cork City on 16 August 1833 for stealing money and received a 7 year sentence. No previous convicted noted. The 1837 General Returns of Convicts notes that he was assigned to Alexander Berry - Illawarra district. As you have found he received his Certificate of Freedom exactly when due in August 1840. Mary timed her arrival perfectly as the Isabella arrived from Ireland in July 1840 Regards Lesley Uebel mailto:ckennedy@bigpond.net.au CLAIM A CONVICT http://users.bigpond.net.au/convicts/index.html -----Original Message----- From: aus-pt-jackson-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-pt-jackson-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Marilyn Sent: Saturday, February 14, 2009 9:56 PM To: aus-pt-jackson-convicts@rootsweb.com Subject: [PJ] Daniel LEARY & Mary SULLIVAN I have just found my ancestor, Ellen LEARY's baptism record Sep 1848 in Yass NSW which states that her parents were Daniel LEARY and Mary SULLIVAN. The Ireland Australia Transportation database has a record of a Daniel LEARY (Doc date 31/12/1839) with the comment "Convict's wife, Mary Sullivan, residing in Cork, granted a free passage to NSW" A second reference for LEARY (Doc date 00/12/1840) comments "Return of Free Settlers embarked on the Isabella for NSW. Wife's name Mary SULLIVAN" A third reference for Daniel LEARY , trial place Co Cork, trial date 00/03/1841 for sheep stealing 10 years - I assume this must be a different Daniel LEARY as his trial is after the date Mary Sullivan left on the Isabella. Does anyone have any connections to Daniel LEARY and Mary SULLIVAN or can give me an idea of the year & ship he arrived on? There are a couple of possibilities on the State Records index to Certificates of Freedom. Thanks Marilyn
Hi Marilyn My ggg grandmother was also granted a free passage to NSW and also arrived with her daughter on the Isabella 2 as a free settler to NSW in 1840. Her husband of course was a convict transported to NSW in 1829. He applied to the government to have his wife and children to be brought to NSW. I have paperwork regarding this request (Colonial Secretary's Office) and there are 16 names on the list making this same request. This may be sheer coincidence but a Daniel Leary per Blenheim 1834 is also on this list submitted to the government around 1838. If you have access to NSW State Archives this list can be viewed on Reel 1051 4/3686 page 76. I have a second document from Reel 699 Colonial Secretary's Office Sydney 1st November 1838. This document gives a lot of information but I only copied the one A3 page with my ggg grandmother and her husbands name so I only have six of the names of the sixteen on the original list (above) but they are in identical order to the first list so Daniel Leary's details will be on the page before this one which I think is page 23. Now what is important about this list is that it gives: Name of Applicant (the convict) Ship's name and year that the convict arrived on that ship Wife's maiden name and County Number of children Residence of wife and to whom known (often the local priest or reverend and others..I guess to prove their identity) So it could be just coincidence that a Daniel Leary and my convict ggg grandfather both had their names on that first list (Reel 1051 4/3686 page 76) and both had their wives arrive on the Isabella. Maybe it is worth a look especially at Reel 699 probably page 22 which would give this Daniel Leary's wife's maiden name. Hope this is some help to you and that he turns out to be the correct Daniel Leary. Also just checked Ireland Australia Transportation database and both my ggg grandmother and Mary Sullivan have the same information on their entries "Return of Free Settlers embarked on the Isabella for NSW" with the same document date etc. Good luck. Hi Lesley "I indexed all the people who left between 1803 and 1811 from the Sydney Gazettes" Have you published this index? I would be looking for Mary Ann Graham, convict, and her husband Isaac Champion, NSW Regiment. Thank you Jan
Hello Marina If you go to the following site and search in the 'advanced search' say for the years 1803 to 1850 you will find that many ships were heading to Valparaiso Chile when they left the Colony. Some of these ships may have been heading back to England picking up goods for sale on the way. Goods were also brought into the Colony from Valparaiso Chile. For example in one article from the Sydney Gazette in 1820s wheat from Valparaiso Chile is discussed as being of being of high quality but "never clean". http://ndpbeta.nla.gov.au/ Happy reading!
