    3. Hullo Grahame Thanks for that - I'll follow it up. I recently checked out 5 John Chard wills at the NSW State Records Office at Kingswood. It's a good way to eliminate candidates. Through this process I've reduced the list of John Chard deaths in NSW to 2 possibles in the NSW index - both are deaths in the early 1890s registered at Liverpool with parents unknown. I'm wondering if these are going to turn out to be deaths at the Liverpool Asylum. If any list member has researched the Asylum records (e.g. admission registers) at the SRO I'd appreciate your advice on how useful these were - level of detail, etc. Regards & thanks Robert Grahame & Rosslyn Thom wrote: > Hi Robert > > There is a John Chard on the Vic Probate index at > > http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/index_search.asp?searchid=54 > > cheers > > Grahame > > On 19/02/2009, at 8:49 PM, Robert Curran wrote: > >> Greetings to list members >> >> This is just an introduction from a new member. 3. Ron, Presumably you have a National Library readers Ticket. (Anyone may apply from all over Australia. See the NLA website.) Go to NLA webpage and to "EResources" and a whole new world opens up including Dublin Freeman's Journal - no fee -, and many many other records which will make a genealogist's heart jump. (A few of the records are available only on site at the NLA.The web site explains all this.) Be aware that the NLA's Dublin Freeman's Journalis a copy of what is held in the British Library. So, for example, 1822 is not included, alas. A more complete set is on the Irish newspapers website, available for the last year or so, but for a fee. (Irish authorities see the great Irish diaspora as a cash cow to be milked!) 3. Hello Joan, Thankyou. The earliest ones I've found in my ancestry to arrive in Australia were Elizabeth Celey and Alexander McCabe, both convicts to Sydney. That was in the late 1700's. Alexander settled at kurrajong/Richmond area. He may be listed? Kind regards, Susan, in NSW. 3. Hello Gerry I was wondering if you could indulge one more Australian who has Irish ancestors. I know that you have had lots of requests so I will understand if you can't help me out. Two of my ggg grandfathers were transported to NSW. 1. Andrew Glannon tried 14th August 1837 or maybe 15th August 1837 at Dublin City (Assizes I think) - name is sometimes spelt as Glennan/Glannan and other variations perhaps even McGlannon??? Andrew stole two lambs and had a former conviction of 2 mths for something unknown. He was transported for 7 yrs. 2. Michael Moran tried 11th March 1828 Mullingar Westmeath. Michael was a Whiteboy rebel and was convicted for "appearing armed"-his sentence was transportation for life. There were five others on his ship convicted at Mullingar Westmeath in 1828. Perhaps they were tried as a group perhaps making it more likely to make the newspapers. On the same ship the Fergusson 1829 there were also four from Cavan County and one from Dublin convicted as Whiteboys. Crimes of all these men ranged from "appearing armed" to "burning house"...both crimes attracting life sentences. Only one Whiteboy received a lesser sentence for the crime of "unlawful pledging." All were tried 1828. Thank you for your generosity for offering to help others. If there is anything I can look up for you here in NSW please let me know. >I have on-line access to the Freemans Journal through my college, Dublin > City University Best Regards on a misty and cool evening in the Blue Mountains near Sydney NSW. Rhonda
