    3. All written down for them Lesley. Why on earth would anyone wonder why a person would move from Canberra to the Sunshine Coast? I thought the answer would be rather obvious. Getting back to Henry Copas, he and his 2 brothers were all bricklayers. John Copas alias Coops (per Marquis of Huntley). John Copas was a bricklayer in Wollongong until 1849 when he became a cab proprietor. I am guessing that Henry went to Wollongong to work with/for his brother John but I have no idea why he went to New England to work as a shepherd for Richard Hargrave on Hillgrove and Hernani Stations. The other brother, George Copas ( also per Marquis of Huntley) was a cab proprietor in Sydney and ended up owning a hotel in Riley St., Woolloomooloo. George also owned property in Oxford St. Paddington when he died and left a substantial legacy to his family, friends and charities. I am guessing that Henry had a falling out with his brothers and moved onto "greener pastures" but why on earth Hernani. Even today it is very cold in winter being high in the New England Ranges and has quite steep and hostile terrain but in those days must have also been very isolated. Even Armidale was just a very small town in the late 1840's. 3. Hi, I have 3 convicts. 2 of them John Casey and James Farrell served their sentence and disappeared from the convict system without getting into trouble but Edward Wilson was different. He arrived 1832 via the Hercules II (3). He is recorded as being in gaol during the 1837 muster and seems to have gotten into trouble after receiving his CF. I want to know why he couldn't behaviour himself and why his son Thomas Augustus refused to name him as his father? And also what happened to his wife Mary Ann Cunningham/Gunningham? Cheers Cheryl

    3. Hi Russell, No, never been able to find a maiden name for Sarah Norris. Her Old Bailey transcript describes her as married with a daughter. Then goes on to mention all sorts of family members, even addresses, which I though would lead to finding it but I haven't managed it. There is no mention of the daughter's name, which would have been handy too. Sarah was transported on the Earl of Liverpool, which had a lot of children too. So perhaps the child came to Aus with her. 1. [PJ] Time travel
    2. Stan Elgood
    3. Hi Lesley, I now have 5 direct convict ancestors but the one I would first visit would be Robert Higgins per Admiral Gambier 1811. He had a short but interesting life. He was a soldier in the 95th Regiment of Foot, 2nd Battalion. He travelled to far flung places of the world in his short lifetime. He visited Ireland, then shipped to Colonia in Uruguay where the British had an offensive on the River Plate. Then later was involved in the war with Napoleon at Walcheren (part of Holland). According to research details : "Forty thousand men landed at Walcheren intending to destroy Napoleon's new fleet. But the British sailed with barely a day's supply of quinine and no hospital ships. In a master stroke of ecological warfare, Napoleon breached the Dutch dykes creating breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Soon thousands of invaders fell sick and a hundred a week died. The force ignominiously withdrew". http://ad.doubleclick.net/adi/N2870.ny/B1157483.2;sz=1x1;ord=2006.03.12.37.58? Robert was court martialled at Walcheren for stealing a watch from a dutch local and was transported. He became a Constable and farmer in NSW. "In November 1827 Surveyor Dixon set out alone to explore the Burragorang Valley, where he was completely lost for four days and came close to losing his life". It is uncertain why Dixon named a creek (Bob Higgins Creek) in the Burragorang Valley after Robert Higgins, perhaps they had a close association or travelled together on his surveying expeditions. Perhaps it was Robert Higgins who found him when he was lost, we'll never know. Sadly, Robert had separated from his wife before this time. A witness stated at the inquest that he found her with another man. A coroner's inquest was held into his death in 1828 where it was found he died from an asthma attack a hut in the mountains. A poignant statement was given to the court of inquest by a friend who was with him when he died. Soon after his death his wife applied to have his two children placed in the orphanage. He fitted a lot into his short life and would have some very interesting stories to tell. Asthma has plagued each generation since, even my grandchildren today. Lyn

    3. Good scenario Lesley, A concept I've often thought about - I imagine materialising at The Rocks in late 1808 and heading up to the pub 'The Cornwallis Frigate' to have a chat with Joseph Morley of the Second Fleet. Over a few ales I would extract all the answers to the questions that in this present age I know can't be answered. After him I would work my way down the list of 9 or so related convicts and their kin and collect their stories in detail. Sigh - in my dreams. 3. Hi List & Lesley, The first convict ancestor I would visit would be my GG Grandfather in 1826, Henry Copas (per Speke 2). I have so many brick walls around this person that have been frustrating me for many years. The first question I would ask would be did he really commit the crime he was tried for or was he just an accomplice to Samuel Barnett and Harry Ward who were tried with him. Next I would ask about the circumstances surrounding his absconding from the service of William Ogilvie at Merton in June 1826 before being apprehended a week later. I would also like to know why he went to Wollongong after receiving his TOL and what he did there. Then I would like to know the reason for moving to Hillgrove and Hernani the employ of Richard Hargrave. I would also like to know what life was like for him and his family in those times. Then I would like to visit his wife, Sarah Carroll (per Surrey 1) in 1852 to find out what happened to Henry and their daughter Mary. Apparently he died between 1851 and 1852 on Hernani Station and there has been no death recorded for him anywhere. Their daughter Mary seems to have disappeared into thin air after being born in 1847. I guess I will just have to keep wondering about these matters as I seriously doubt time travel will become a reality in my lifetime. :-)) Cheers, John Caling Currimundi, Qld.

    1. Re: [PJ] Time travel - Simeon Lord; Mary Lord and Mary Bateman
    2. L Nichols
    3. My first choice would be Simeon Lord (my 3xgreat grandfather) - what stories he would have to tell!!!! I'd also like him to give me a picture of his house at Botany and to let him know that his family Bible is lovingly in the care of the Mitchell Library in Sydney. Also one of his account books is there with a most interesting drawing of what appears to be native animals. Who drew it? Hopefully (although he predeceased her by 21 years) he could tell me where his wife, Mary nee Hyde (aka Sarah Blunn) is buried. And Mary Lord, I would like to know why she made no mention of leaving anything to Simeon Junior's children in her will. To both Mary and Simeon I would tell them about these huge birds which now land and take off on part of their Botany property and the 3 grants to the west of Simeon's grants which they later owned. Very, very, very large birds which "swallow" and "disgorge" at least 300 people and even bigger birds are coming!!!!! To Mary Bateman (my 4xgreat grandmother), (Lady Juliana) I would sympathise with her plight - yes I know she was a "pro." at approx. age 14 but times were tough then. But I can understand why she eventually died in the Liverpool Lunatic Asylum - 11 and a bit months on board the Lady Juliana (I presume she partook in the brothel activities); - arriving in Sydney (a very desolate place compared to the hustle and bustle of London); - being sent to Norfolk Island (when did you go; did you commit a crime in Sydney or were you and other Lady Juliana convicts sent there to be "wives"). Even less on the Island than in Sydney> - being married to a man much older than you and very stubborn. - and if that wasn't enough, just as you were beginning to be settled on Norfolk Island, being transported to Van Diemen's Land (eventually living in Hobart and having to start all over again). "Exiled 3 times over" - no wonder you were declared insane. Joan Nichols Joan Nichols

    3. Oh Lesley, if I could zip back to 1832, and get hold of Sarah Norris , I'd be able to ask her how she met and married my gggrandfather Haycock James Hutton, and perhaps find out where he was born. Something I've been trying to find out for nearly thirty years!!!! Then I'd get them to walk me to the shoemakers shop they had in upper George St. Find out why they split up and how he came to W.A. Also I'd ask Sarah what happened to her daughter, that is mentioned in her trial notes. And why on earth did she think she could steal silk from her boss and fill her wardrobe full of lovely clothes unnoticed, when she was just a house keeper?? Ah what fun it all would be. Sorry you asked now Lesley? Best regards, Jan D. 3. Hi Lesley, I have left the family history that I have been collecting for over 20 years to my youngest son (26 years) in my will. Hard Copy and the scrapbooks I have of the family. I said to him, he is the keeper of it, he doesn't have to do anything with it other than look after it and pass it on to one of his children, with the same MO.. He was mortified because at the time he was not the least bit interested. But within the last 6 months he has 1. Asked about our Irish Convict heritage as he was talking to a friend who is Scottish and he 'thought' our heritage was Irish but was rather unsure. (I named him Liam!) 2. asked for a copy ( CD) of the family history - which I quickly did while he was interested 3. during a phone conversation told me it was about time that I scanned all the certificates and extras I had on to a disk in case something goes wrong. So I think I am winning this battle! regards Donna

    3. Hi List Snip: Let's assume that a time travel capsule has been invented. Which convict ancestor would you visit first and why? I would like to ask my 3x great grandfather Daniel CANVIN to please put down his anvil and come and sit down quietly under a tree on the Badgery's property at Majors Creek and tell me why: Although I have his permission to marry document dated 5 Aug 1826, I can't find a marriage. I would tell him that I have been through all the records BMD, LDS, Mutch Index, Fr Therry's Papers, I have tried to scale the wall and get into the inner sanctum at St Mary's Cathedral however Pauline tells me that I can't have access to their files. I would say that I have found reference to his marriage in a book by Kieran Sheedy and I have written to Kieran Sheedy in Ireland asking for the source however I didn’t get a reply. The book goes on to tell me that the marriage was performed by Fr Therry and that Mary Dwyer acted as one of the witnesses. Now that has had to come from somewhere. I would also like to know, if you did marry Elizabeth MASINER c 1826, why your first child Eliza was not born until 1831. I believe that it is good to wait however five years is a little out of kilter for those days. Did you perhaps loose some babies or were you employed miles away. I would tell him and that I am enjoying my research and after one big hug I would slip away clutching the horse shoe that he gave me. Jenny

A William Morgan received 3 grants, but whether this William is one person; two people or 3 people we have no way of telling. Because William's first 2 grants were at Concord, I tend to think that they are the one person. (a) 1794 - Book 1A - Grants by Franics Grose. No 154 William Morgan Feb. 20 Granted 25 acres in the district of Concord. Rent: 1/- per year commencing after 5 years. (b) 1795 - Book 1A - Grants by William Paterson No 456 William Morgan July 22 Granted 55 acres in the district of Concord. Rent 1/- per year commencing after 5 years. (c) William's name is also included in some sort of "missing land rants" - which I don't quite understand. He is listed as 1 of 17 who received a grant (or grants) of land "in common". Can't tell you much more than that. No George Morgan is listed. There is a Richard Morgan listed who had bought land from people who had been granted land on Norfolk Island. First mentioned as having bought someone's grant (or part thereof) in 1794 which he surrendered to the Govt. in exchange for land in Hobart. You might have to make a trip to the Land Titles Office in Macquarie Streeet, Sydney (St James Station end), to see where William's grants were. I don't know if that information is also held by State Records, Kingswood which would obviously be a lot easier for you to get to.
