I seem to recall that this year the National Library of Australia is looking at genealogy/ family history web sites. As you can imagine its a very difficult exercise in setting criteria as to who to select and to how often to take a copy. You can see information about this collecting exercise at the web site below. Also you can access on this site a list of sites that have been archived by NLA at some time. I note the list does include historical societies and also the Society of Australian Genealogists. Maybe this site should be archived by the State Library of NSW from time to time. I did not check SLNSW's involvement. Maybe the US library archive system archives rootsweb. cheers Grahame
Good evening Lesley and Listers I would love to know more about William Marjoram, from Suffolk,b. 1816, who arrived on the "Mangles" ca 1837, with a 14 year sentence. He was known as William Marjoram until 1853, and after the death of his wife Catherine (nee Kennedy) that year, he changed his name, apparently went on to have another family, but no-one with connections to the first family seems to know what he changed his name to. It is known he had descendants as one of them contacted the family on the day of a funeral to tell them they would never find him!!! If anyone has an ancestor who gives his parents' names as Robert and Frances ( she was Frances Crow) both born and married Bredfield area Suffolk but died here, but no other info., maybe this is who I am looking for. Dear List I would choose to travel to Parramatta on Sunday 4th March 1804 - the night the Irish convicts commenced their rebellion at Castle Hill Government Farm. Why - to see my convict ancestor Andrew Snowden in his role for the Parramatta Loyalist Association during that night and the next morning in Parramatta. To see this part of Australian history unfolding would be fascinating. Regards Garry Sanders Kariong, NSW

I would like to ask Timothy Farrell (Cambridge 1827) who his parents were. Where in Roscommon did he come from. And to thank him for picking pockets & getting caught other wise I wouldn't be here. Why when he died in the Liverpool Asylum in 1870 was there no mention of his wife Susannah. Was she already dead. Also I would ask Susannah Whitley (Mary 111/5)who her parents were did she really come from Whitehaven. Did she really have such a bad temper that she had to fight with everyone she was assigned to & then after marrying Timothy why did she abscond from him leaving behind a daughter Mary Anne (born 1840 Female Factory) only 20 months old. Where the initials NW & CW tattooed on her arms her parents. Did she enjoy? her 7 trips to gaol. I would love to have a heart to heart with these two. Carol in Tenambit.
G'day I would visit George Smith (Minstrel, 1825). Dusty, as we call him, stands out for me because he is the only one among all of my convict ancestors from which an oral family history has survived to the present day. This is something my family treasures dearly. Thanks go to my loquacious maternal line. If Dusty is half the irreverent larrikin and loving man that descendants have come to understand then it would be an enjoyable and moving encounter. I should like to sit down and have a beer with him on his verandah and read him the news (he couldn't R/W but he liked his newspapers, and they liked him). But before we become too groggy there would be many tantalising mysteries I would like him to clarify. Luckily we have the next best thing to time travel; bringing the past to the present: the PJ list. Cheers Brent
Hi Lesley and List The first convict I would like to go back in time to meet is William Dick . I'd like to know where and when he died. I'd like to ask my g g grandfather John Cartledge (not a PJ convict but he is the convict ancestor I'd most like to have a chat with) what went so terribly wrong with his parents' marriage that his mother was forced to declare him a bastard when it wasn't true.... and why, after his father remarried, his mother stuck to her married name right up until the day she died. I'd also like to ask him exactly how many children he and his wife Sarah Cook had, why they never managed to register the vast majority of them , and where and when their elusive daughter Caroline was buried. Oooh and also, who do the initials C.B., tatooted on his right hand stand for? My questions for this gentleman would fill a book. LOL! :) Lyn in NSW

Hi I would ask Edward Fuller and family why they sold the site of Kellyville now to the Kelly's and why they didn't hand it down. Hi Lesley, You are absolutely correct as usual. From what I know of Henry and Sarah Copas they were "as poor as church mice" and I don't think that religion would have played a part in their lives, let alone own a bible. I have a photograph taken in the 1880's of Sarah and the lace on her dress is full of holes. She looks a very sad person. Regarding tossing family possessions, when my Grandmother's estate was broken up I told my mother that I would like any photographs that anyone else did not want. She very proudly presented me with about 20 studio photos and 40-50 family snaps, then told me that there were 3 suitcases of photos that she did not think I would want so they were thrown out to the local tip. I was not a very happy person but what could one do? There is a family bible from my mother's paternal line that is jealously guarded by a second cousin. She kindly let me photograph all the pages with entries. I also have a photo album that was brought out from England by this family in 1845 but unfortunately there are no names in it. I now swap digital images of photos with other interested family members and have collected quite a remarkable collection. Unfortunately some of the people cannot be named but they are all treasures. One may have been passed down one line only to be tossed by someone who was not interested and certainly didn't want a record of a convict on the family. How many times as that happened! How many times do we see family Bibles up for sale? How many times do we find old photographs that have been tossed out by someone for sale at the local markets? Computers are commonplace these days, but we don't know what will be available in say, 200 years. Some people upload their family history onto various web sites but we just don't know if these will still exist in 200 plus years. Lots of copies of the written word - I hope will survive and be retained by at least a few who are interested. I'd love to ask Robert Aiken who arrived on the Martha in 1819 who were his parents? Why he resigned his position as a Constable at Windsor nine months after being appointed on the 4th June 1823 and is he buried on the property of Charles Forbes in the Patrick's Plains area where he died in 1836 before receiving his freedom? Happy 8th Birthday PJ Convict Listers and thank you Lesley for all you do. Cheers Valerie Williams of Mollymook
Hi all, As I am a closet time travel reader, I have often thought about this topic. First convict ancestor I would like to visit would be Patrick Tunney. He was from Roscommon from Ireland arrived on the "Pilot" in 1816 and had two children with Sarah Pendergast. He died in 1824 and I would dearly love to know if Laurence Tunney who he was tried with and came out on the same boat was related, uncle, father, brother? I also would like to know, where he hid his diary. I am sure he had one (ha ha) I used to fantasize that one day I would find Patrick's very detailed diary that he began when he was 5 years old....(never mind that he probably couldn't write) didn't all our ancestors have diaries, letters and family bibles hidden somewhere, we just need to know where!! I would also find it very rewarding to spend some time with John Pendergast (Sarah's dad) who came out in 1800 on the "Minerva". I would like to know where he came from in Ireland (only know he was tried in Dublin) his parents and confirm whether he really was involved in the 1798 uprising. I would take my digital camera and photograph him with all the family I could round up on the day, weher he lived and would also take my MP3 player and conduct an oral history interview, one of those ones that you ask 1001 questions, like what date is your birthday, what school did you attend, what is your favourite color, what were your parents names etc etc. If I could take my laptop with me I sit with everyone and and fill in the data as I went. Good topic Lesley, but I think better stop there... Michelle Nichols
