    3. So Lesley, after all these years of genie work and experience you've built up, I don't suppose you would have a brick wall left in your own tree? Jan D -----Original Message----- From: aus-pt-jackson-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-pt-jackson-convicts-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Lesley Uebel Sent: Sunday, 8 March 2009 3:02 PM To: aus-pt-jackson-convicts@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PJ] Time Travel - invisible me Hi all As I said the other day, my trip - well my first trip anyway, I would prefer to be invisible. That way I could just observe them. I could listen to their everyday conversation, how they treated each other and their children, watch meal preparation and how they shopped, what they ate, watch them at work and how they interacted with others around them, -- guess I could poke around their house (or shack) a bit :)). A second trip I would talk to them.... but I wonder if I could understand them with their Irish brogue. I would then have to find a dressmaker to make some suitable clothing to wear as I don't think jeans would be appropriate. 3. For those interested in Isaac Gorrick, pugilist, there was an article published in the Sunday Telegraph 5 September 1993. There was also an article on the life story of Isaac Gorrick published in the Newcastle Herald 3 February 1898, an obit for Isaac's wife published Maitland Weekly Mercury 22 January 1898. There were many stories concerning Isaac published in the Maitland Mercury over the years. As some of you may know Ann Bradwell had children with both Thomas Lisson and Isaac Gorrick, and the Lisson children often took the name Gorrick, including John and Isaac jr. It seems to me too much of a coincidence that the boxer is not connected in some way (- but I may be totally wrong about this.) He may be someone who knew the family and took the name - Bungaree may also have been borrowed from the name of the aboriginal Bungaree who accompanied Matthew Flinders and Philip King on their explorations or from the town of that name. I would appreciate any information or suggestions. I have contacted a couple of boxing experts but without any luck so far. I have 2 references for William BLAKE taken from the film of the Indent of the Minerva, both gave different details of age, origin, trial date and sentence, so I thought they were for 2 separate convicts. William Blake of Wexford, per Sugar Cane would be 46 and William of Tyrone, per Minerva would be 40 in 1817, so either one is still a possibility. 2. Norma McLean
    3. Hi Everyone, What a great idea !! - if only ... Firstly I'd like to ask my 4th G-Grandmother how she and the other 49 female convicts aboard The Emu (1812) - bound for Hobart Town - survived for almost a year when they were captured by Pirates on the "Holkar" and marooned on St Vincent in the Cape Verde Islands for just on 12 months. They were eventually rescued from St Vincent, taken back to Portsmouth Harbour by the "Isabella" , but were not allowed to land because they had been sentenced to "transportation over the seas". Eventually they joined other convicts on board the "Broxbornebury" and sailed again for New South Wales on 22 February 1814, over a year after their original date of departure. This time bound for Sydney Town. Fortunately for me she managed to survive, arrive in Port Jackson instead of Hobart & marry a member of the crew & have 8 children. She's my favourite convict as she endured so much - just to get here . She was 18 at the time of her trial. As well, like Peter Stewart I would wish to ask Mary Groves (Prince of Wales 1788) - my 5th G-Grandmother, what happened to her after her daughter Elizabeth was Christened in 1796. Her husband William Douglas (Alexander 1788) who she married on 1st June 1788 managed to keep visible & has a headstone at St Albans Old River Cemetery. Poor Mary...who knows where she is. 1. [PJ] John Rollings Rowling Rawling Second Fleet Neptune and or Surprize
    2. Karen Hodges
    3. Hi List I have a second fleet convict John Rowling aka Rawling, Rollings who has been associated with two ships. Most records I have collected say he came out on the Neptune [this is the ship I have recorded him as ,arriving on] some records mention the Surprize. The word 'transferred' has also been written eg He was initially on one, then transferred to the other. I believe the transfer was before sailing from England. I have a some questions regarding the 2nd fleet, why would someone be transferred between the ships before they left please? Were the convicts assigned to set ships based on the goal they came from, their sex, their crime, their sentence or was it just pot luck? Whats would be the best record[s] to consult to find out the truth if he was indeed placed on one ship, then transfer to the other or just on one ship the whole time? Would the reason why be recorded? Thank you Karen

    2. Lyn
    3. Hi Warren, Yes, that's the Mary. I don't know any more about Jonathan Brooker than what's printed in "Mary Wade to Us": /Originally came from Kent, though crimes were committed in London. (often spelt Broker in original records) The name, Brooker, is listed as a peculiary local name in an area of Kent until the great social upheavals of the 18th century. The Process Book of the Surrey Quarter Sessions say that on 20/2/1788 he was accused of an assault on Isaac Solomon. He pleaded not guilty, and after trial was acquitted with no prosecution. At this stage he was living at St George, Southwark, and was called a labourer. On 5/10/1790 he was charged with the theft of 200 pounds of glue, valued at eight pounds. He was tried, found guilty of felony, transported for 7 years. At this time he was described as a chair maker of the Parish of St Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey. Documentary evidence of his date of birth not found, but calculations made from the dates shown in official documents indicate he was over 30 when arrived in NSW. /Regards, Lyn / / wdiggins@aol.com wrote: > Hi Lyn, > > I gather you are referring to the Mary Wade who was the partner of > Jonathan Brooker. > > My Diggins family is connected to the Brooker's by marriage to Jonathan > Brooker's grandson Murdo. 3. Joan, Your Mary Bateman would have known my 5xgreat grandmother, Mary Wade, as she was also on the /Lady Juliana/ (at 11 years of age being the youngest female convict to be transported) and went to Norfolk Is. My family history book "Mary Wade to Us" states that the /Lady Juliana/ arrived in Sydney Cove on 6/6/1790 with the convicts disembarking on 11/6/1790. As the /Lady Juliana /was unfit to continue on to Norfolk Is, soon after disembarking, 150 of the younger and healthier women were boarded onto the /Surprise/ and arrived in Norfolk Is 7/8/1790. The landing of people and goods on the island was hazardous and when the /Surprise/ was disembarking her convicts, one boat load of women and stores capsized in the heavy surf, with 7 lives being lost and the boat smashed to pieces. (our Mary's would most likely have witnessed the incident) Most of the women were assigned to non-convict men. Before leaving Norfolk Is and returning to Sydney, Mary Wade gave birth to two children (convict father) - Sarah, my 4xgreat grandmother, and William, Kevin Rudd's 4xgreat grandfather. 3. Its simple in the ACT Lesley - I only had to deposit one copy - a minimal cost. Family historians should look upon this process as a plus because its a way of ensuring long term retention of your efforts in writing up your research. 1. [PJ] Time travel - John Manning - Royal Admiral 1800
    2. Grahame & Rosslyn Thom
    3. Hi list I would like to spend a few hours with my g/g/g/g/grandfather John Manning who arrived on the Royal Admiral in 1800. I know a fair bit about his life in Sydney but only his trial details in London. You are said to have been born in Whitechapel about 1768, and at your 1798 Old Bailey trial you said you had a wife and five small children. Was your name spelt Manning, or Mainwaring, or Mannering? Perhaps you dont know how it was spelt anyway. Did you really have five children or were you trying to influence the decision? What were their names and the name of your wife? Who were your parents? Grandparents? Did any of your children come to Sydney as has been suggested? Your deed is so open were you trying to get caught to get away from your family and terrible London? Where did you live in London? What work did you do - described as a labourer? Could you read and write? When your partner Margaret Beynon (Nile 1801) died in 1849 she was described as the wife of a gentleman. Well done. cheers Grahame

    3. Hi Grahame Each State and Territory has its own laws as regards legal deposits although a copy of any book - (A work can be a book, a periodical such as a newsletter or annual report, a newspaper, a piece of sheet music, map, plan, chart, table, program, catalogue, brochure or pamphlet.) produced has to be deposited with the National Library of Australia. As I live in NSW I had to provide 5 free copies of a book I produced a few years ago to various libraries and that included one to the NLA. The NLA does not, at this stage, require a copy of any CD or DVD produced although some States do have that requirement. I went through all of this years ago with the State Government here in NSW. It is something that everyone should be aware of when publishing a 'printed book' as it adds greatly to the expense. On the other hand if one publishes something using a CD only, then they have the problem of people copying and distributing it to their friends...... which many people do unfortunately. I dont know the ins and outs, but as I understand in Australia under Commonwealth law any organisation that makes a publication widely available, is required by law in submit a copy to NLA (and by State legislation to the State Library). This is easy when it is in hard copy but for the internet I am unsure. One would expect the relevant Act has been updated to cover internet material put up on a registered Australian URL. As its impractical to collect the lot the Act probably allows NLA to be selective. I doubt "permission" is required, but depends on co- operation between NLA and web site "owner". I am sure its explained on the PANDORA site. I would imagine under Australian law if someone publishes material on a CD or DVD and makes them available to the public then a copy should be sent to NLA (and appropriate State Library). I would expect the USA to have a similar law (and State laws) and that law would apply to rootsweb whatever it provides. But what happens when things cross borders???? Another observation is that all material on the internet is generally available world wide whether free or fee. So how can copying be stopped. Yes there are copyright laws but???? 3. Hello Lesley, They don't seek permission. I know, as their "Pandora" trawled by web site on and off for several weeks. I don't have a problem with that as I can "copy" any web site I like as well. If you don't want information to be "stored" by others, do not put it on the internet. 3. Hi Jenny, Re Daniel Calvin, this is not the first wedding preformed by Father Therry, that has not been found. My ancestor Elizabeth(Betsy)Sinnott was married to Richard Dwyer by Father Therry but again no evidence exists. I know this marriage happened as it was certified as having happened on a application to remove Elizabeth's daughter from the Orphan Asylum. The application for permission to marry together with two other exists but not the evidence of the marriage. It would be interesting to how many of his marriages are missing from the records that were supplied later to the Register General. Was a book lost or were just a few not recorded or was a page or so lost from the book or did the book get wet in the saddle bag and some pages become illegible? Regards Elizabeth -----Original Message----- From: Jenny T [mailto:] Sent: Saturday, 7 March 2009 8:00 PM To: AUS-PT-JACKSON-CONVICTS@rootsweb.com Subject: [PJ] Time Capsule Hi List Snip: Let's assume that a time travel capsule has been invented. Which convict ancestor would you visit first and why? I would like to ask my 3x great grandfather Daniel CANVIN to please put down his anvil and come and sit down quietly under a tree on the Badgery's property at Majors Creek and tell me why: Although I have his permission to marry document dated 5 Aug 1826, I can't find a marriage. I would tell him that I have been through all the records BMD, LDS, Mutch Index, Fr Therry's Papers, I have tried to scale the wall and get into the inner sanctum at St Mary's Cathedral however Pauline tells me that I can't have access to their files. I would say that I have found reference to his marriage in a book by Kieran Sheedy and I have written to Kieran Sheedy in Ireland asking for the source however I didn't get a reply. The book goes on to tell me that the marriage was performed by Fr Therry and that Mary Dwyer acted as one of the witnesses. Now that has had to come from somewhere. I would also like to know, if you did marry Elizabeth MASINER c 1826, why your first child Eliza was not born until 1831. I believe that it is good to wait however five years is a little out of kilter for those days. Did you perhaps loose some babies or were you employed miles away. I would tell him and that I am enjoying my research and after one big hug I would slip away clutching the horse shoe that he gave me. Jenny

    3. Hi Lesley & list, Who first? Maybe my GGG grandfather John Winch, Hillsborough 1799 - but he never told the truth, so no use asking the questions! Second choice would be Mary Tumilty, John Renwick 1838. She put in 2 applications to marry, both in 1843. One to Cornelius Dehany or Danehe, Parmelia 1833, the other Thomas Sanderson or Saunderson of John Barry, 1839, both applied through Rev. John Rigney of Wollongong. She married neither but son Thomas was born c1845, never baptised. She married Joseph Jagelman, Marquis of Huntley 1835, in 1847, & son John took the Jagelman surname. Please Mary, could you tell my children the identity of their GGG grandfather? Joan Edwards Enjoying PJ since the very early days - thanks Lesley.

    2. Hi Lyn, I gather you are referring to the Mary Wade who was the partner of Jonathan Brooker. My Diggins family is connected to the Brooker's by marriage to Jonathan Brooker's grandson Murdo. I am interested in finding out about the origins of Jonathan, as I have another "possible" connection to a Brooker family through my Diggins line. I have seen it posted on the internet that Jonathan Brooker (Atlantic 1791) was born in Kent, notwithstanding having been tried in Surrey. I have also found a photo of his headstone which indicates he was 76 when he died. I was wondering where the information came from that he was born in Kent, and I would like to find some verification of his birth year. 2. This has worried me - it is all on computer now but what is going to be the method of recording in say 100/200 years or even in 20 years - will what is recorded on our computers be lost?? I know that in my family a bible was buried with a family member and and all the information recorded in it is now lost forever so I try where possible to provide my family with copies of photographs, some of which are over 100 years old, so that maybe they will survive and be available to the following generations and it will be so much easier for them to trace their heritage and they will not have so many "brick walls". I know everyone is not into family history and when I was younger it did not seem important to know about your family history however now I cannot get enought information and how I wish I had listened to my grandparents & parents stories about their childhood and thir parents/grandparents coming to this country - maybe I would not have so many brick walls and I would have been aware much sooner in life that I had 2 convicts as ancestors. 2. Bill Willett
    3. Leslie, if only !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would love to just take his hand and ask him to take me to where his wife Elizabeth is buried, so I could finally fulfil an ambition of mine to visit and place a flower on all my Australian direct ancestors graves before my turn arrives.
