    1. [PJ] LOOK UP AT NSW STATE RECORDS
    2. Peter Strauss
    3. Hi Listers, Could some kind lister who is going to Kingswood, and has the time, look something up for me please. I am seeking a discharge date from Cockatoo Island for a convict George DUDLEY alias George CHAPMAN. DUDLEY/CHAPMAN was in the first batch of convicts sent to the island in 1839. He was certainly free by May 1841 as I have found a permission to marry on 16/05/1841 which states he was free. What I wish to establish is when he was granted his freedom. The record details I have found on the State Records site are: Series # 12216 Descriptive Note:- 4/4540; microfilm copy SR Reel 605 If anyone can check this for a reference I will be able to order the appropriate record from the State Records Office. Cheers Peter Melbourne

    3. My direct Irish convicts were Patrick Conlon my GGG Grandfather arrived from Kildare Ireland on the Minivera 3 on 18 December 1819. Tried in July 1817 he was convicted of Theft and given 7 years. Unfortunately the national archive records on line do not cover these earlier years and they have no prisoner petition for Patrick Conlon. There was no local newspaper published in the area at this time to cover the trial. I would be grateful to know if there are any other records that might give information about his original crime. His parents in law were Irish Born convicts from Drogheda, Louth, Bernard and Jane Carr. Fortunately for me they were living in England when they committed their crime. Bernard arrived on the Grenada 21 Oct 1819 and Jane on the Lord Wellington on 20 Jan 1820 with their children. The couple were charge with receiving known stolen goods and both given 14 years. Both committed their crime at a different time. Karen

    3. "The Stamp of Australia" is the story of how Australians have told the world and each other what it's like to be Australian. In 1809, Governor Lachlan Macquarie appointed a thief as Australia's first Postmaster. This man, convicted - according to legend - of stealing a donkey, started a business that today is worth billions of dollars and touches every Australian. "The Stamp of Australia" will commemorate the 2009 Bicentenary of Australia's oldest institution. It is a snapshot of Australia's history during the tumultuous eras of a new colony as it evolved from convict settlement to a prosperous and proud nation. The Post Office has been actively and intimately involved in all that has happened in this country since European settlement, coping with gold rushes, huge influxes of immigrants and several wars as well as rapid and dramatic changes in technology. Without following a strict timeline, "The Stamp of Australia" will use a Presenter-cum-storyteller to lead our audience through a landscape of fascinating stories and heroic deeds of the pioneers who made the Post Office prosper: the men and women who conquered the tyranny of distance so the mail always got through. http://www.historychannel.com.au/tv-shows/showDetails.aspx?show=300 THE STAMP OF AUSTRALIA FOXTEL WORLD PREMIERE Part 1: ISAAC'S BABY - 23 MARCH 7.30PM (AEDT) Part 2: ISAAC'S LEGACY - 30 MARCH 7.30PM (AEDT)
