Hi Jenni I have had the same trouble with my Irish Convict [Patrick Conlon] from Co Kildare tried July 1817. I know he was sentenced for theft but that is all. I wrote to the local county Library to find out if there was a newspaper account unfortunately for me, there were nil local papers at this time being published. You might have better luck in Co Meath. The Library should have an email contact to ask. The Library in Newbridge Kildare suggested I contact the National Archives to see if he was listed in the Prisoners Petitions 1777-1836 [ these are appeals from convicted people for pardons or reductions in sentence]. Again no luck for mine but you might find yours in these records. I would be interested in hearing of any other resources, that this information might be found for an Irish convict in this time frame. Hi all, I am having a difficult time trying to discover what crime my convict ancestor committed.. I've checked the indents ( The Port Jackson Convicts Anthology), Irish database, the NSW State Records and cannot find the info I'm after. This was James O'Neil of the Canada (3) arrived PJ 1815, trial at Co. Meath Ireland 1814, sentence to life. Cheers, Jenni South Australia

Hi Grahame I wondered about this source, does Nick just cover the known parish records that feature in BDM index or has he also looked into ones that are still held locally with parish churches, that are unindexed? Hi list Another interesting publication is "Parish Registers in Australia" by Nick Vine Hall, 1989. The purpose of this book is to indicate where originals and copies are held. Also there is a summary for each State/Territory. Even though 20 years old it is still useful. Grahame

Hi Joy, I bought my copy years ago as it was published in 1988. I would imagine that it could be in many libraries. SAG have it in their library, but not for sale in their bookshop. Hi Lesley and Listers, Lesley we share Brittania and Parmelia but mine were English convicts - Margaret Fogarty (Brittania) and Edward Greaves (Parmelia). My Irish ancestors (Gauls) are free settlers to Port Macquarie in 1840 although another English ancestor (Wiliam Wilson - also Adam Gilchrist's ancestor) was superintendent of Convicts at Port Macquarie 1830 -1836. What a small world!!!!! Cheers, David Gaul.
Hello everyone, I have recently been trawling through these films at the Mitchell Library and it would appear that there are at least three separate sets of records. Many of these events will be found recorded in the BDMs two and three times and then some not at all. This might be because of misinterpretation of the hand writing. While searching through these records I have found the names of witnesses, conflicting dates and in some cases with the marriage records showing both parties were men!! I know that is not possible for the 1820s onwards, so obviously mistakes have been made recording all parties including the witnesses. Could it be possible for a group of researchers to group together and collate all these films into one data base? What would be the copyright limits? Would we need to obtain permission and who from? These records are now in the public domain but extremely frustrating to use. Anyone prepared to participate? Cheers Suzanne Voytas
Hi listers, Today I celebrate GG Grandfather-in law, John Grainger (Mangles 2) 1822. If it wasn't for this Irishman coming here, I wouldn't be sitting here typing this and I wouldn't have my family or this interest in genealogy. On another subject - trying to trace John's brother, Thomas. I found a ticket of leave for Thomas Grainger (Waterloo, 1838) from York ass. Ticket no. 46/113. I was wondering of anyone on the list has any info on this person at all. Family rumor was that Thomas was a mercenary and although Irish, could've been anywhere when put on a convict ship, if indeed a convict. Have a good St. Pat's! Regards, Marina.
