    3. Hi Lesley, Many thanks for the explanation. I had noticed it, but as there weren't any emails from anyone else I thought it may be something wrong I was doing. 3. Hi Anne Elizabeth Broughton came to Australia as a bounty immigrant on the Layton in 1833 married at 21 to George Smith, they were living in the Yass area for some time I believe. Elizabeth S. Smith ( nee Broughton) died in 1867 in Dalton (NSW) aged 49, born in London fathers name Elijah F. Boughton (sic) 7 Males and 2 Females living 3 children deceased. George Smith died 3 Oct 1871 in Jerrawa creek district of Yass NSW born England age 64, spouse Elizabeth formerly BONTON buried in Wesleyan Cemetery in Dalton. So there is very little to help me here I'm afraid as the death certificates are notoriously inaccurate, so I'm not really sure how to proceed with George Smith's origins. I've gone back quite a few generations with Elizabeth Broughton/Bowden/Boughton so that's good. Many thanks Dianna

    3. Hi Dianna, Sorry if I've miss it, but what do have on Elizabeth Broughton? Was she a convict or born in the colony? How old was she at her marriage? I only ask because when I'm stuck I like to look at all the people involved because sometimes you can get clues that way. There is a Broughton family in the Musters, children of the widow Eliza Broughton and living in Appin. A son William Broughton is farming on the Goulburn Plains in 1828. There is also a daughter Elizabeth, but she was 17 in 1825 so could be a bit old to be your Elizabeth. bye Anne -----Original Message----- From: dianna charles Sent: Friday, May 20, 2011 9:43 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [PJ] Free by Servitude HI Everyone Now my question is re George Smith, how can I find out more details on him to trace him to his origins. 3. Hi Dianna You could contact the Goulburn Historical Society (I am assuming there is one) In the book Monumental Inscriptions - Goulburn, there are two entries of interest. St Saviour's Cemetery Smith Isabella, born 19 Sept 1820 at Meerut, East Indies, died 11 Aug 1885 at Oak Farm, Goulburn, also her husband George Smith, died 29 Jan 1889 aged 72 years Goulburn General Cemetery Smith, George ......... died ........... aged .7 years, native of London, England - Footstone G S 1868 (in otherwords difficult to read) cheers Grahame On 20/05/2011, at 9:43 AM, dianna charles wrote: > HI Everyone > Now my question is re George Smith, how can I find out more details on > him to trace him to his origins. 3. With regards to the end of a sentence and a convict being given a certificate of freedom:- Did the sentence time begin from when they were arrested, sentenced or when they arrived in Australia please? Was there a process, that could involve delays with the certificate being issued? Michael Noy aged 14 year, was sentenced on 15 April 1833 to 14 years = 1847, he arrived on 14 Feb 1834 and died 23 September 1847 and was buried on 25th. He received a ticket of leave 18 July 1841, I found no certificate of freedom. The burial states his profession was labourer, ship Fairlie; [it seems he was still considered a convict]. Karen

    3. Hi Lesley Yes you are correct it is of course a church record, this was sent to me by the Berrima Historical Society. Dianna, Sorry for the delay; checked our Sutton Forest church records and found George SMITH/Elizabeth BROUGHTON marriage, yes, they were married on the thirtieth of January 1837. Both signed by their mark (X) they were both from Goulburn. In the upper right hand corner of the m. certificate, above George's name is a notation - "FREED BY SERVITUDE", so yes, he was a convict. As for the person who stated he had his TOL I haven't heard from them even though I've contacted them a couple of times, but when I contact them again I will ask about the with permission of the Governor. Yes as you say it could be any George Smith who came to NSW couldn't it, such an awful name to research. Many thanks Dianna

    3. Hi Dianna As they married in 1837, then it could not be a "marriage certificate" but a church record of the marriage. Have you actually sighted this record? The reason I ask is that I have never seen one with the words "freed by servitude" included on it. That does not mean that it is not possible..... it is just that I have not seen one. The use of the word "Freed" concerns me as usually the term used on some records was "Free by servitude" A little while ago you did state that a friend or cousin stated that he was in receipt of a TOL - but could you ask her if it included the words (or similar) "with permission of the Governor" There are quite a number of convicts who could fit - ging back to those who arrived in the early 1820s regards Lesley Uebel http://www.claimaconvict.net/index.html CLAIM A CONVICT email: [email protected] On 16/05/2011 5:12 PM, dianna charles wrote: > Hi Lesley > I have found out a little more on George SMITH. 3. HI Lesley Thanks very much for that well if he was 35 when he married in 1837 he couldn't be 21 years of age on arrival in 1831could he, yes I realised my mistake stating that the Lady H arrived in 1830. At least now I know that the George Smith who married Elizabeth Broughton was a convict as it states on his marriage that he was Freed by Servitude. So now will have to sift through all the George Smith's again to find a match. Thanks for your help much appreciated. Regards Dianna

    3. Hi Dianna The Lady Harewood arrived in 1831 and not 1830, although it did leave England in October 1830. Part of the Indent for the Lady Harewood states that he was about 21 years of age on arrival. He had been single and a Protestant and could read and write. It also states that he was a native of Oxford and had been a Groom. The Indent gives no indication that he ever received a Ticket of Leave Regards Lesley Uebel http://www.claimaconvict.net/index.html CLAIM A CONVICT email: [email protected] On 16/05/2011 5:12 PM, dianna charles wrote: > Hi Lesley > I have found out a little more on George SMITH.
