Rhonda Another suggestion is that you may wish to check the database at the Hyde Park Barracks - I don't believe that this is available on line. He was probably sent their initially after arriving - he may have stayed there and worked for the government or sent elsewhere to work for the government. My friend tells me she has ancestors who came on one of the first three fleets but they weren't convicts. Please can someone advise if there is a website that will give names of those other than convicts?. Their surname was JOLLY. Cheers and thanks Janine.
Hoping someone can help with a couple of queries. This is my first posting on this website. Re : Convict William Underwood who arrived on the "Westmoreland" in 1835. William was aged 31 and sentenced to 14 years for counterfeiting. He was from Bristol and sentenced in the Bristol Quarter Sessions. He was the brother to my Great Great Grandmother Louisa Underwood who was sent on the Emma Eugenia (3) to VDL arriving in 1844. She was sentenced to 7 years , also for counterfeiting. Two of her children came out with her.Does anyone out there have connections to William Underwood? On Monday my Husband and I attended Descendants Day which was held on our Foundation Day at the Fremantle Prison. It is for those of us who have Convict ,Enrolled Pensioner Guard and Warder ancestery.I have 3 convict ancestors sent to VDL and WA and my husband has 5 WA convicts only.( I am still trying to track my GG Grandmother in Braidwood , NSW and I am wondering if she was a convict also, Mary Farrell.was born 1825 Kildare,Ireland and died 1908 in Braidwood) .We also saw the"Women Transported"- Life in the Australia's Convict Female Factories. A fantastic exhibition ,spent ages reading and viewing it all. Well supported with many, many people going through. Having both male and female convicts I find this history so very interesting. As an aside I have been wondering for some time if anyone tell me if convict women were ever held at the Hyde Park Barracks prior to being sent as secondary offenders to Peel Stations at Moreton Bay or Eagle Farm? I couldn't find any reference to it at the exhibition unless of course I missed it ! The Murrays

Just passing on the following message from the State Library of NSW. Please note if intending to visit the State Library of NSW for research over the next few months, that the Mitchell Library collection will have limited access from Monday 6 June to late July. I am currently researching information about Michael Coughlan, arrived Florentia 1 Jan assigned William Bucknell. Have transcripts of trials from Old Bailey, ToL, CP, permission to marry, transcripts of court case in Sydney after absconding from Wollombi Bridge party and a few snippets about him in Singleton during the 1840's. I am trying to tie some loose ends together such as when did he leave Bucknell's service, when assigned to bridge party and what happened after that before his marriage to Ann Kershaw in 1839. Also researching Thomas Kershaw Coughlan, his son. I have considerable information on him but always willing to share some more. Thanks Rob Coughlan
Hi All, Did anyone on the list have a convict on this ship? The owner & commander of the ship General Stewart 1818, Captain Robert Grainger was accused of many things by Captain Barnard of the 84th Regt. guarding the convicts. Some of which were watering the rum, short-weighting the convicts sugar, replacing King's bread with ship's bread & abusing soldiers of the guard. I have transcribed the "Proceedings of the Bench of Magistrates", Captain Grainger's defence & the verdict of the proceedings from the fiche at State Records. If anyone would like a copy please contact me as I am only too happy to send one. It is quite lengthy so please contact me off-list. Regards Gladys

Hello all, I was reading the UK publication "Family Tree Magazine" November 2010 today and found the following which I thought might be of interest to someone: (a) page 8. At www.ancestry.co.uk - Prison Hulk Registers and Letter Books 1802-1849. The records give details of each inmate's name; year of birth; age; year and place of conviction; offence committed and the name of the prison hulk. Originals are held by the National Archives in Kew. (b) National Archives has catalogued more than 1000 medical officers diaries (Adm 101 series). Diaries, journals of surgeons & assistants who served on HM ships, hospitals, shore parties and on emigrant and convict ships between 1793-1880. www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/surgeonsatsea. (c) For anyone with Somerset convict ancestors, a new Heritage Centre has opened in Taunton. The article suggests that a lot of their holdings; artifacts etc have come from the 14 or so local units in the County. New address = Brunel Way, Norton Fitzwarren, Taunton. Some resources apparently date back to 8th century. email - [email protected] web address - www1.somerset.gov.uk/archives/SHC/intro.htm (d) Find My Past has apparently released BDM records for Manchester, going back to the 1700s. Not sure when they were released. Hope this helps someone, Joan Nichols
