    3. Hi, I have a query which I hope someone may be able to help me with. My ancestor John Pheasant was freed by serviture on 21 December 1847 but I also found an article in a the Colonial Times aying he had been given a Ticket of Leave on 24th May 1842 on the occasion of the anniversary of the birthday of Queen Victoria. I wondered how these two events could relate to each other. I would be grateful for any help at all. Thank you. June

    3. Many of the soldiers who fought with the British regiments against Napoleon were members of units raised in the West Indies. One of them William Afflick was the most highly decorated black soldier a bugler in the 10th Hussards who fought in four theaters of war. He was retired due to losing his front teeth which made it impossible to sound the Bugle and though an ordinary soldier was so highly thought of he received a pension. He was found a job as a barber in a hotel in Brighton, married an English, girl (a dressmaker) raised a son Charles and a daughter Ann. Charles was delivering a dress to a customer, accused of stealing it and was arrested. He was transported to Australia and many years later died in Milton. It would appear there was a lot of ethnic cleansing going on, whereby the old dart was swept clean of anyone who was a bit different, perhaps considered undesirable and if you had a trade you were fair game as tradesmen were in hot demand in the colony. 3. Not only between the West Indies. All the major Imperial European cities had sizable Black populations due to well over a hundred years of Slavery (by then), the Sugar and Tobacco trade, the disruption caused by the Revolutionary war in the US, and the veracious labour demands of the various Navies and Merchant Marine. One recent estimate suggested that the average ship had 20-25% Black crew. London and Liverpool had sizable Black populations since they were the busiest ports in the world. I have a Black ancestor from each. An interesting book that sets the tone of the late 18th Century in this regard is: *The Many-Headed Hydra: **Sailors, Slaves, Commoners and the Hidden History of the Revolutionary Atlantic* *By Peter Linebaugh and Marcus Rediker (Verso, 2000) Hardback/433pp/£19/ISBN 1 85984 798 6* *Ray * On 7 July 2011 19:39, <[email protected]> wrote: > I have an ancestor who was described as "mulatto" born in Liverpool > England, > I think that there was a fair bit of traffic between the West Indies & > England in the early 1800s > > -----Original Message----- > From: Raymond Chilton > Sent: Thursday, July 07, 2011 7:25 PM > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [PJ] Maybe OT query > > Dont forget that West Indians were tried & sent to Norfolk England then on > to Australia. > Cheers > Ray C > > On Wed, Jul 6, 2011 at 7:46 AM, Alice Erickson <[email protected] > >wrote: > > > Well, Russell, that's a wrinkle! 3. Well, Russell, that's a wrinkle! As far as I can make out this man was of island appearance - now in the context of Aus that could mean coming from some of the Pacific Ocean islands - Melanesians etc near us. That's most likely. But some people say he came from the Caribean - that's hearsay - whether relying on his appearance or something that their elders knew at the time I don't know. He was accepted into community here in so far as his children went to school but aboriginal children weren't accepted at the schools. So people thought they knew there was something different about him. Islanders from Pacific Ocean were often treated as the aboriginals were. He had work on properties around here and was well known for herbal knowledge and remedies. And just today I heard that he went to jail at Dubbo when older so I have to follow that up. So unless that island in Merseyside near Liverpool was a place where this sort of person would be held I think not.
