    3. Hi, My name is Margaret Weston and I have seen the posts on your website regarding the above two people. I would just like to let Faye Sheriden know what happened to Thomas Smith. I have attached the article his son Charles put in the newspaper in 1862 after Thomas went missing in 1854... I found these on Trove Ref The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW:1842-1954) Friday 14 March 1862 Page 1 Advertising Ref: 13225800. I know she placed the post in 2008 but maybe she hasn’t found this and I would like her to know just a little bit more, and that they were happily married. Cheers, Margaret

    3. G’day Ray Hi Chris What Ray found seems to indicate the 15th Reg James Farrell is a different man to your James. I would imagine, if born 1796 is correct, your James was not discharged with a pension, on two grounds, he had not served 20 years, and in any case being found guilty he would not get a pension anyway. One can search TNA online to see if the 15th James Farrell has a discharge certificate. Only those discharge certificates relating to soldiers who got a pension have been retained. I searched and found he appears not to have got a pension. I also think he served in the 95th last. How do you know Chris that he was a “military convict”? Grahame Also in Oz Sent from my iPad >

    3. And continuing along Grahame’s line of thinking, maybe this will help you. I went to the UK’s TNA (The National Archives) website, and in their search box input this: WO: “john farrell” The WO: was to indicate that I was looking for War Office (i.e. military) records. There were lots of results. This one mentions a John FARRELL in the 15th Regiment, which Grahame mentions below. The cut-off date for FARRELL’s service appears to be 1818 — which aligns with your information. BUT … it gives his AGE at that time as 37; which does NOT correlate with your age information. Anyway, here is a (sort of) copy and paste from the item (they wouldn’t allow me to copy what I was reading. grrr….; so I suggest that you conduct your own search in the TNA website, in order to see what I am reading: You are in The National Archives' catalogue <https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/browse>WO - Records created or inherited by the War Office, Armed Forces, Judge Advocate General, and related bodies <https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/browse/r/h/C259> Division within WO - Records of the Royal Chelsea and Kilmainham Hospitals <https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/browse/r/h/C537> WO 97 - Royal Hospital Chelsea: Soldiers Service Documents <https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/browse/r/h/C14305> Subseries within WO 97 - 1760-1854: discharge papers arranged by regiment, but each described at item level. 3. Hi Liz, Just wondering if you had any additional information on John Farrell (born 1796, Dublin, Ireland). The story I have been given goes like this:- John Farrell and Francis Hunt were convicted of theft in a dwelling at Halifax on 19 October 1819 - he was a military convict from Canada. John FARRELL arrived in the colony aboard the "Hebe" in 1820, having been tried and sentenced in Halifax Nova Scotia for breaking, entering and stealing from Andrew Lintner, he received a "Life" sentence. After arriving in NSW, John FARRELL was assigned to the Gaol Gang at Windsor, then by the 1822 Muster he was listed as a Government Servant working for G Saunders at Windsor. 1823/24 John FARRELL is assigned to John Howe at Newcastle. John Howe had taken up a land grant at Patricks Plains on the 30th June 1823, he named this property "Redbournberry" 1828 Census lists John FARRELL twice, assigned to John Howe at "Redbournberry" and also "Bedboro", another property granted to Howe in 1824 near Ravensworth. John FARRELL is listed as aged 30, with occupation given as carpenter and stockman, his religion given as Roman Catholic. 18th June 1830 John FARRELL is issued with a TOL, to remain in the district of Patricks Plains. His TOL was altered on 17th January 1832 for "Upper Hunter's River". His TOL mentions his "assistance in the capture of 5 notorious bushrangers". 22nd December 1834 John marries Ann REX/RIX at "Glendon" Patricks Plains. Ann was a bounty immigrant, arriving aboard the "Layton" in 1833. Ann had been working for John Johnston who owned Clyde Farm, a property located just across the river from "Redbournberry". 1837 Muster John FARRELL and his young wife are listed as living at Liverpool Plains, his age is given as 37. 28th April 1838 John Burton FARRELL is born, his christening occurred on 24th June 1838 in Muswellbrook C of E, John FARRELL is now a tenant farmer in the area. 1st February 1839 a Conditional Pardon is granted to John FARRELL. 8th April 1841 a daughter, Mary Anne is born to John and Ann FARRELL, she is christened on 3rd October 1841 at Scone CofE, John FARRELL is now a "district constable" living at Scone village. John FARRELL was working as police constable in Murrurundi from 1841 through to 1844. 22nd November 1842 John FARRELL purchases a residential block in the main street of Murrurundi from Thomas Haydon for £40. 11th August 1843 daughter Jane is born, she is christened in September 1843 in the Parish of Scone C of E, John FARRELL is shown as living at Murrurundi, police constable. The Electoral Roll for the District of Phillip Brisbane and Bligh lists John FARRELL as a householder in Haydonton (Murrurundi) for the year ending 31st August 1852. It appears after his time as a police constable, John FARRELL worked as a stockman/jack of all trades to some of the pioneering families of the district. Mrs Caroline Wightman, in an account given to her granddaughter in 1883, tells us that John FARRELL was working for the Wightmans on their property "Kunopia" at Boomi, north of Moree. John FARRELL was injured by a spear from an aboriginal and "made a cripple for the remainder of his life". 22nd April 1864 John FARRELL dies in Murrurundi, age given as 68 - cause of death is given as natural decay. His burial was presided over by a Methodist minister by the name of Charles Wites. Do you have any information on the Canadian connection? <> Sincerely, Chris Gosby gozmob@gmail.com <> <>
