Thank you, Linda for this list. My name is John SHEAHAN. I'm a teacher in Wagga Wagga. My genealogical interest in this list concerns the CARTER family. James, wife Jane, 6 daughters and, finally perhaps!, young James, arrived in Sydney in 1845 aboard the "Comet" from England via NZ. James married Ann NOY in 1866 at Yacandah. (That's as close as I can get from the certificate.) They settled where "Brenda" station now is, right up towards the Qld border, not all that far from Goodooga. Their children are registered in Walgett, Dirranbandi (Qld) and Currawillingai(?- certificate indistinct). James had a pub there at first, while he also selected around it - if family lore is correct. Stories suggest life was pretty tough. Later, he took up stations just across the border; there are descendents still there. James was into horse racing apparently. My daughter, when she turns 21, will inherit the Lady's Bracelet won by his horse "Canadian", ridden by Dick Skuthorpe (?), possibly in Brewarrina. There is more, but I've rabbited on enough already. I have some questions - if anyone can assist I'd be grateful : 1. Where is YACANDAH? Or have I got the spelling wrong? 2. Where is CURRAWILLINGAI? Or, again, is that spelling inaccurate? 3. Is there a resource on the settlement of this region? 4. Finally, the real long-shot - Does anyone know of a way to locate the race mentioned above? Also, if anyone connects to any of this, please contact me. I look forward to the postings from this list.
