You have made my day. William henry is my Great Great Grandfather. Many thanks Julie Mclean. -----Original Message----- From: jac <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Wednesday, March 29, 2000 8:22 AM Subject: RE: [NSW-W] Lookups >Hello Julie > >McKEAN, Eva. I'm sorry there are none by that name listed in the few pages of the Clermont School Roll in my possession. However, I have a few other publications in my library where I found mention of the McKEAN name. If you are interested in any of the information below let me know and I will have a closer look for your name as time didn't allow me to go through everything thoroughly. > >"A Shifting Town" compiled by Richard & Marguerite Stringer from the Collection (of photos) of G C Pullar. This book is full of Mr Pullar's glass plate images of Clermont and its people around approximately 1900 - 1916. Remarkably, the pages are not numbered but on one of the pages it talks about the big 1916 flood which devastated the business sector of the town and killed many citizens. After the cleanup it was decided to shift the remaining buildings on to higher ground and the author writes - "Two traction engines were used, one owned by the Derrett brothers and one that Mr W H McKean had purchased from the Gogongo Divisional Board in 1899 to draw coal from the mines to the railway station at Clermont. The "Peak Downs Telegram" reported the purchase at the time, 29 September 1899. > >"She is capable of drawing 36 tons ... at present, Mr McKean has a contract to supply 9,000 tons of coal from the Eldorado. The engine has a high pressure steam boiler, capable of working up to 150 lbs. She was indented to the order of the Gogango Division Board from Aveling and Porter, Leeds about nine years ago at a cost of 925 pounds but has actually only been working for about three years. Her maximum speed is 6 miles, and loaded 3 miles an hour." > >It is therefore possible that some of the photos showing the steam engines shifting these large buildings shows W H McKEAN if he's your ancestor. Perhaps you know this already. > >The Belyando Shire Council put out a book "A History of Clermont and District" by Dan O'Donnell wherein it mentions thousands of names of former Clermont district residents. I haven't had time to read through it all but managed to pick up the name of Charles KcKEAN while talking about the 1892 Committeemen of the Bathampton School in the 1890s, who "were citizens who voluntarily accepted responsibility for their little school in order to bring light and learning to children of the locality". > >There was an Alderman McKEAN on Rockhampton City Council in 1938 who, when talking about building swimming baths commented "Let them do as I did when I was young; I had to get into water holes". Alderman McKean drily commented that he remembered his grandfather talking in that way. > >The Central Queensland Pioneer Register lists an Evelyn McKEAN b 15/10/1885 at Springsure, Qld died 7/6/1953. She was the wife of George Charles ALDOUS and they married in 1908. A Mrs P Murphy is the researcher but her main interest seems to lie with the "Aldous" name as she lists 3 names.
