Hi everyone, I've recently been told that a relative, William ORR, lived in Broken Hill, sometime after 1881, and was said to have amassed a considerable fortune. Would anyone know of this man and his family? He was b. 1843 in Irvine, Ayrshire, and married Mary FRASER in 1878 in East Melbourne. His parents were William ORR and Jean/Jane HUNTER. I believe he died in Melbourne in 1929. I would be very interested to find any children of this marriage, I couldn't see any on the NSW BDM site for this area. There doesn't appear to be any in Vic. either. William was an auctioneer in Wangaratta before he moved to Broken Hill, and in politics also, I think. Many thanks for any help you can give me, Jill, Brisbane.
Dear Jill, If this happens to be the person then it looks like you've got the big - wig in the miners union. Not all details fit exactly. It's possible that there might be a son called William ORR ??: ........... Certainly politics ! Using http://www.google.com.au ............. orr ... "broken hill" http://www.zipworld.com.au/~cpa/garchve4/1073ross.html In 1933 Edgar joined the Communist Party of Australia (CPA) as a so- called undercover member. He had also joined the Miners' Federation and as an employee of the Barrier Truth was active in the Broken Hill political scene. In that year communists were elected to the leadership of the Miners' Federation William Orr as the General Secretary and Charles Nelson as the President. http://www.cfmeu.asn.au/mining-energy/common_cause/cc1999/cc9904.html http://workers.labor.net.au/151/c_historicalfeature_ross.html Cheers, Tony Moore (Balgo, Western Australia) @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ On 10 Feb 2005 at 0:02, Jill Glover wrote: > Hi everyone, > I've recently been told that a relative, William ORR, > lived in Broken Hill, sometime after 1881, and was said > to have amassed a considerable fortune. He is the brother of J.R,McWm's wife, Janet. Trying very hard to trace him in Broken Hill. He was Mayor in Wangaratta, and maybe MLA, around 1880. Have got quite a bit on this family now, records only, some occupations, and know where they landed, in South Aus. Cheeers, Jill.
Would appreciate hearing about that when you are ready cheers Peter ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jill Glover" <jmglover@tpg.com.au> To: <AUS-NSW-WEST-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, February 10, 2005 8:02 PM Subject: Re: [NSW-W] William ORR > He is the brother of J.R,McWm's wife, Janet.
