My Wifes' g gfather , Jame Larkin , Arrived in Australia about 1872 , and may have landed at Maryborough on the Polmaise on its final Journey before sinking on the Great Barrier Reef. He came alone and it is not known if any of his Siblings followed , or if he even had any . We do know that he came from Kilkenny and was born about 1846. He did well for himself in Australia , arriving with nothing, He became a publican owning the Bunker Hotel near White Cliffs Which was burnt down and was the last licencee of the Victoria Hotel between Wilcannia and White Cliffs. The Victoria Hotel was also the homestead of a pastoral lease , Which passed on to his sons when he died, he died in Broken Hill and was buried in Wilcannia in 1938. Could you pass this note on to any Larkins that may turn up at your reunion , because although he raised a family , he never spoke of his Childhood, and it is likely that he had siblings that may have followed him here, or remained in Ireland. It is believed that his parents may have been victims of the Potato famine , because they are shown as farmers on his marriage certificate and death certificate. Hi Bill, James Larkin wa the licensee of the Bunker Hotel 1910-1917. The hotel was on Tarella Station, 23 km from White Cliffs. It was wood & iron with a dirt floor-small with three bedrooms. It opened in 1880.The hotel was flooded in the 1898 flood. It closed in the 1920's. James Larkin & his wife have a headstone in the Wilcannia Cemetery. Edward F Larkin is listed as being the licensee of the Victoria Hotel , Mena Murtee 1919-1921. This hotel was also flooded in 1898.
