    3. Whilst I am asking very dumb questions, I will ask some more and share a little information. Is there anyone with older family members in Warren or who were living in Warren in 1930? Or the Marthaguy Shire? Unfortunately I am still trying to track down information about an accident which occurred in Warren (or around there) just on Christmas in 1930. All material records for that period have totally evaporated. Police records prior to 1965 have been destroyed as have local newspapers for that period. I am hoping that perhaps some older folk may have a memory of the accident. Beryl did suggest a couple of months ago that I try the Police Gazette at the State Archives. Which I did - unfortunately there was no information regarding this uncle - but it certainly opened up a can of worms regarding his brother :-)) Turned out that his brother was arrested down near Gundagai for using a motor car without permission and for breaking and entering. Nobody in the family, not even his children, were aware of this indiscretion during his youth. If anyone is interested in persuing the Police Gazettes for information regarding criminal offences I do recommend it. Up to 1930 are on microfilm, and you can get access to others after then in their original paper form up to 70 years ago. Information is listed alphabetically and cross referenced by any alias. Also, many people charged and convicted have their photographs and physical description in the Gazette's. You need to look for these as they are appendixed separately to the Gazette - these photos create essentially a "mug" book for the police. We found details of the crime, where it was committed, how and when they were arrested and by whom. Other people involved in the crime. Where and when they were sentenced (also any previous convictions). Where they served their time and when they were released. If they were parolled (referred to as "by licence" back then) and if they were where they were given a train ticket to and the conditions of their parole. This was aside from the physical description and photograph, which were invaluable. An absolute goldmine of information. Of course we then had to tread carefully and break the news to his children as they had absolutely no idea, and it was a shock because it was so very out of character to the person they knew. Also many of his children and grandchildren were/are actually police officers. I am told that I may be able to get a copy of the transcript for his hearing from the local court where the trial was conducted. (Different record keeping policies to the police) I will let you know if I am successful. So a big thankyou Beryl - we didnt find what we were looking for, but we did find very valuable information about our family. Also is there anyone on the list that is associated with the Historical Society in Dubbo? I am trying to track down the original source for one of their publications. The society office is only open on days when I find it hard to phone, and I want to be tactful (and pleading) when I ask which is hard to do in a letter.
